Vessel Announce Wrapped in Cellophane

As I was going through the old set of emails, I was struggling to find something that really stood out to me; I honestly thought about going to bed and getting up to see if anything fresh popped up. Then, I found this rad Vessel tune, as the band announce their debut LP, which should offer all you cool cats a little solace from the mundane punk of today. I like the slinky nature of things in the presentation, with the guitar wiggling like a slinky pulled taut then loosed…there’s even some squiggly accents from keys too. Vocals play off the beat, but they’re only hanging about for a bit, with the band intent upon fleshing out that groove; they add in horns and seemingly throw in some snappier beat work, all of it perfectly ready for you to slide about your house locked into the vibe. They’ll be releasing Wrapped in Cellophane on April 2nd via Double Phantom.

Neil Brogan Drops Line Check

I’m an avid Neil Brogan fan, ever since his days in Girls Names and following through to Sea Pinks, etc. Last year he dropped Yrs Truly, and it looks like he’s got something springing up this year with Neil Brogan and Band. This is a frantic little number with these jittering guitar lines that jump back and forth across the mix; it sort of feels like the ghost of Elvis Costello’s early work, so the ATH team is definitely here for that. Lyrically, it’s simplistic, and perhaps it’s just a fun way for Neil to introduce new tunes and a new line-up…we’ll keep you posted as we hear more.

Stream New Music from Mikko Joensuu

Felt like we should take a breather with our musical coverage a little bit, offering a pensive number, courtesy of Finland’s Mikko Joensuu. His latest release, Long Ark, is a double LP opus, stretching over 80 minutes, so it definitely is something you’re going to have to sit with for a bit of time, ideally the ten or so minutes streaming below. This tune’s full of slow moving vocals, a bit of string work, ultimately allowing you soak in the mood; it’s this dense cavern of pop music that really encourages full immersion. There are moments in this where I couldn’t help but just sit with Joenssu’s delivery, holding on as he stretches syllables into the soft curls of the atmosphere. Find yourself some time to spend with Long Ark and the tune below!

Ducks Ltd Share New Single

For a band that’s spent the better part of their career banging out jangling adjacent pop rock, the new Ducks Ltd single should be a bit of a surprise to listeners, though not necessarily a bad thing. For nearly two minutes, the band spend their time in a more casual land, carefully picking on the guitar with little atmospheric flourishes bubbling to the surface occasionally; it’s presented with zero percussive element, but it’s nice to see a little left turn in the midst of an album cycle. Drums do kick in, and the song opens up a bit, but at that point, the vocals become just another layer as the band builds a bit of depth to their tune. Harm’s Way is out February 9th via Carpark Records.

Six Organs of Admittance Share The Mission + Announces Time is Glass

It’s strange how the world works, as my brain definitely feels a bit like wandering about, kind of drifting. As I sit down this morning with that presence, the music in my inbox seems fittingly matched, particularly this new Six Organs of Admittance tune. Ben Chasny’s voice alone wins me over here, dripping with emotion as the hairs on your arms stand-up. Musically, and forgive me as my brain wanders, but this tune feels like being lost in some great expanse of nature, and from the hills you hear this song echoing, bounding down and calling you home, distant but all encompassing; it feels timeless, like the world has beckoned you to find your place of peace. Perhaps that is what Ben has found on his new record, Time is Glass, which drops on April 26th via Drag City.

I was introduced to the band a few years ago, and reveled in their blend of lo-fi bedroom recordings and psychedelia. So, when they reached out wondering if they could call ATH Records home for their new EP, I jumped at the chance to work with them. Dead Bandit Share Blowing Kisses

Really stoked to spend more time with this forthcoming Dead Bandit LP, as I’ll admit, I often find myself a bit bored with a lot of the modern post-rock stuff. There’s something in this duo that really makes it feel fresh again, which I’m grateful for today. For instance, this tune opens with this anxiety inducing bit of atmospherics; it’s a dense backdrop to your favorite new sci-fi series. And, as you begin to feel the edge, the group lock into a melodic group of shaking percussion and careful key/guitar lines. Sliding into that melody, you’re hooked, it’s like the saving grace, feeling that rush as you switch from fear into comfort; they build the tune from there, letting you dip your toes into the melodic water, only so they can bring that haunting atmosphere quietly back into the tune. Their new LP Memory Thirteen will be out on February 9th via Quindi.

Al Harper Announce the Analemma Observation League + Shares Single

There’s been a run of really great tunes lately that bounce between a folkier historical vibe and modern pop flare; you had that great Waxahatchee hit, and now you’ve got this fresh single from Al Harper. Carefully opening with vocals and piano, the song welcomes you in the saloon, but once you step foot inside the song you’re caught up in the steady bounce of the songwriting. You can ride the backbone of that groove, just as Al does, letting her vocals take on this classic American vocal that’s perfect for a performance at the Grande Ole Opry. But, while you can hear the lingering tinge of Americana working in the song (and the line-dancing of the video), there’s still this vibrance that courses throughout, serving as a reminder that there was a time when great music just was, and we didn’t need genres and reddit threads. If you’re looking for classic rock n’ roll vibes, might we suggest you look into Al Harper’s new album, the Analemma Observation League, out February 23rd via Take a Turn Records.

The Shop Window Share I Run

We should all start our day with a little bit of sunshine, and a little bit of janglepop, as nothing quite encourages you to open the curtains as those ringing guitar tones. It seems the Shop Window had the same idea in mind when organizing the tracks on their new Daysdream LP, as the jam below kicks things off with these huge crystalline cascading riffs, hanging over a thumping rhythm section. Of course, you couldn’t get away with just throwing those classic indie sounds in there if you didn’t center it around a great voice like Carl Mann’s, who gets help every step of the way with some great backing vocal layers. If you’re into it, then you’ll want to grab Daysdream when it drops via Jangleshop on May 3rd.

Sunlit Prep New Album, Share Back Single

I’m a sucker for big grandiose pop vibes, and Oxford’s Sunlit is definitely hitting that note this morning. You might recognize songwriter Joe Moore from the Yearning, but this new sound really hits hard on broad sweeping melodies and nostalgic sentiment. I can imagine a video with Joe at a piano, fog machines billowing behind him as the films wash is done with a grainy effect; there’s a light shining in the background, just as the chorus hits and the fans swoon. If you want big ballad vibes, sounds like Sunlit‘s got ’em. More info on the LP coming your way soon courtesy of Elefant.
