Idles Announce New Album, Tangk

Felt like no one would be up in the morning, so why not pull what the big blogs do and schedule a jam for you all to run before I’m even awake! Honestly, I’m still waiting to hear the entirety of the new Idles record. But, employing James Murphy (among others) for backing vocals seems like a step to move outside of the established sound…which can be wearisome nowadays with the various imitators. This has the same bite, but with a little bit of a new flex to keep the band moving in new directions. They release Tangk in February of next year courtesy of Partisan Records.

Squirrel Shares Another Single

While it might not have the cache of the cool kids, I really am appreciating the quiet work of Squirrel. From what I know, Squirrel is holed up in his tree, crafting these lo-fi pop tunes that wouldn’t be too far away from the heart of Daniel Johnston. That might be easiest to feel in the vocals, but there’s also some quick decisions in the songwriting that feel like the sort of left turns Daniel would make in his work; there’s just a lot of personality that shines through in the craft that makes me all the more appreciative of Squirrel’s songwriting. Keep an eye out for Everything Sucks Forever when it drops on October 30th.

Emma Anderson Delivers Fresh Single, The Presence

Having covered the majority of the singles from Emma Anderson‘s forthcoming solo record, I totally had my own expectations when hitting play on the new single, but admittedly, I got spun around. Within seconds, keys tease you into a quick drop that delivers a sharp toe-tapping bit of guitar work; you can hear the faint build of lush atmosphere behind Anderson’s voice, but for the most part, everything here feels snappy and fresh. This is precisely the way one moves forward into their own territory, leaving breadcrumbs to Lush, but making a sound that feels vibrant and joyous on its own terms. Real excited to hear all of Pearlies when it drops this Friday via Sonic Cathedral.

Melody Fields Shares Jesus Single

If you were looking to get into the latest cool Swedish outfit, might I suggest you try on some Melody Fields. This weekend they sent us a reminder that their latest track also came with the release of their 1901 LP. For me, this track’s sort of in that weird psychedelic territory where it’s not quite Spaceman 3 but also not quite Brian Jonestown; there’s certainly a heaviness pervading, albeit with these swelling vocal melodies popping in and out in all the right places. Ride thids tune right into the purchase of their new LP; it’s available now!

Tar Of Drop Ey Vayy Single

Feel like I needed something working more towards left-field, so I have been gravitating towards this new single from Tar Of from Brooklyn. I’m tempted here to refer to it as an instrumental piece, although there’s clearly a vocal soundtrack that is the driving force here; it kicks off just before the 30 second mark, pushing the track into this frantic territory. Throughout the track, horns honk in and out, accenting the negative space that works behind that central groove. If you’ve not heard the group, check out their other singles from the forthcoming Confidence Freaks Me Out; its been a definite treat on my end. The LP is out via Sound as Language on October 27th.

Chad Vangaalen Shares Earth People, Drops Split EP w/ Astral Swans

In what I hope is a nice little ode to the Dr. Octagon, Chad Vangaalen shares a new single from his Split EP with Astral Swans. If you’ve been following Chad over the years, this track sparkles with is trademark ability to blend folk and electronics in a manner that still feels refreshing and new, as opposed to some bit of cliche indie rock. There’s these ghostly chorus moments that rise into an eruptive punch, then things subside as the song seems to be breaking down on itself…but it doesn’t. Instead, it continues to push forward, moving and bubbling, like a weird combination of Elf Power meets Flaming Lips. Full EP is out today!!

Red Pants Share On a Wire

I can’t tell you how much I’m looking forward to the new album from Red Pants; Not Quite There Yet seems like the perfect record to wrap up my year end list. For me, the record operates in between the lines of really incredible melody, with hints of fragility, like on this latest single’s vocals. And, while that closeness seeps through your speakers, there’s still a bit of a heavy edge to the playing, providing all you old punks with the ability to grasp the straws of cool. Plus, the DIY aesthetic from Lambeth and Nekola carries such sincerity in all aspects (music, videos, artwork) that it’s definitely refreshing in a time when we throw that word around too often (myself included!). Not Quite There Yet is out on October 27th via Meritorio, and it’s going to rule!

The Uptights Share Tor Aukrust

You’re just waking up to today; you’re a bit weary as you rub those little flecks of sleep from the corners of your eyes. On the stereo, you hear this beautifully solemn song from the Uptights, something that makes you aligns with your exact state. The song rolls, tosses and turns slowly, like you, arising from your slumber. There’s this cavernous depth, like the fog cruising through your mind before you’ve showered and had that first cup of coffee. Something about this just feels like a musical awakening, and we’re all the better knowing that someone’s put music to our every day routine. The Norwegian outfit will release I Was Dreaming on October 27th.

Captain Starlet Share Self-Portrait Single

We’ve been relying upon the good folks over at Safe Suburban Home Records to bring us great pop hits from the UK over the last few years, and they’ve got a great new AA single for your ears from Captain Starlet. The lead single, “Self-Portrait” here definitely recalls a very British sound, think of Teenage Fanclub without some of the fuzzier edges; I love how the chorus changes the direction, bringing in more of a classic pop rock sound. “Running Water” is a bit lighter, almost channeling a bit of surf rock in the strum of the guitars; the vocals also take on that light mist that washes upon you while you dip your toes in the seas. Check out the single below!

Hard Copy Share Airlines

Another week and another chance to turn you all onto Hard Copy. They’re working under a punk umbrella, most assuredly, but perhaps one of the things that’s most intriguing is the way the album twists and turns in on itself, changing directions. Here, I feel like there’s some Byrne meets B-52s at play, but there also seems to be this sort of indifference towards either, especially in the way the lyrics occasionally get delivered in an almost haphazard step by step basis. Then the song moves into this narrow dreamy state, with the vocals punctuated and erratic, letting the band bounce every which way they choose. It’s a fascinating journey, and one of the various reasons you should have 12 Shots of Nature on your radar; it drops on October 20th via Feel It Records.
