Certain Times Share Today Tomorrow Always

The husband and wife duo Certain Times have deep ties to the Atlanta music scene, but as they’re currently residing in New York, they’re likely to encounter a bit more anxiety; it’s hard to ignore it just stepping out the door, but its all how you cope with it that makes you a New Yorker I reckon. So, what do two musicians do other than dive into writing music to cope with those anxieties and their new surroundings? You’ll hear a fairly cathartic formula here, blasting synth stabs to line up with the punch of the vocal work. There’s some textural vocal layerings as well, adding an extra layer of depth as they build a more complex vibe in the electronic pop realm. The duo will release Desire on June 9th via Double Phantom Records.

The Toads Share Tale of a Town Split in Two

The Toads are angling to make their name one to keep an eye on over in Melbourne’s hot music scene, and today they give us another peek inside their debut LP. When this number began, it sets up for this raucous bit, kind of bouncing in with this catchy bit of scruffy barroom rock n’ roll. Riffs begin to run amok, however, coursing through the song’s negative space and moving that bounce to the back of the mix for a moment. All this, only for the band to kind of serenade us in the middle, bringing this almost baroque pop moment as a gesture for our ears. Then the riff rings again and the band break into a closing jam that keeps you on notice for their new LP! In the Wilderness will be out June 9th via Upset the Rhythm and Zenith Records.

Feeling Small Shares First Single

One of the great things about working on a site like this is you can do whatever you want, and I would like today to turn our attention to our friend Chase Weinacht and his new project Feeling Small. We’ve worked with Chase before, but for this project he’s amassed a rotating cast of Austin characters including members of Why Bonnie and Good Looks. Honestly, this song’s hard to distance from Chase, but I think his personality it what bleeds into his music; he’s a gentle soul a loyal friend and a supporter of all of you, even if you don’t know it yet…I think of that whenever I hear his words pop through my speakers, grateful that there’s still folks like him writing great songs with their friends. His songs are the opposite of the band’s name; they make you feel huge and part of something bigger than yourself. But, don’t take my word for it, stream the new tune below!

Listen to Martin Frawley’s Heart in Hand

Having followed and booked Martin Frawley in his old band the Twerps, I’ve been increasingly impressed with his solo work the last several years, and the shaping of The Wannabe seems like its going to be something special. You get this rolling drum beat that gets your feet shuffling on the new single, allowing Martin to work his melodic Aussie drawl atop the mix; the guitar bits come in and out of focus, almost as if its like a dance performance, trading places back and forth with the rhythm and the hooks. For me, I always come back to the familiarity of Frawley’s voice too, as I loved all the Twerps LPs, so it feels like home. Rest assured I’ll be grabbing the Wannabe when it drops on June 23rd via Trouble in Mind Records.

Rishis Share Just Between You and Me

When you press play on your computer or stereo, what are you seeking? For me, I want that instant moment when everything in the world seems to align and the hairs on my arm raise. This is exactly what I got when I turned on the latest track from Elephant 6 affiliated the Rishis; the song has this natural immediacy that I couldn’t quite escape. The guitar lines are solid guitar fuzz, but they’re calm, easing into the picture, which allows the set up the vocals. Something lurked there, something so perfect in tone that I just wanted it to envelop me whole. Pardoner Announce Peace Loving People

Pardoner dropped Came Down Different in 2021, receiving tons of great reviews, deservedly, and I hear even more praise coming for their new album, Peace Loving People. This fresh banger is certain to catch on with the kids, as the distortion rings appropriately, supported by these huge power pop rock riffs and these lackadaisical vocal lines delivered in a haphazard manner. But, it’s all a set up. Just as the song seems to sedate the listener, it rips into action at the 1:36 mark, tearing through your speakers with this terrorizing rage of bombast and speed; you’re likely going to be shocked at the dramatic switch, but you’ll be better off for it! The new LP is out on June 23rd via Bar None Records,with a big old tour kicking off the first week in July throughout the US of A.

Bodywash Release Perfect Blue

This Friday comes the release of Bodywash‘s new LP, I Held the Shape While I Could, so why not offer up one final tease before the record is out everywhere, eh? Listening through, there’s a whole lot to the vibe, with texture after texture being built into the gradual swell of the song. At times, I can hear earlier Spiritualized in the semi-psychedelia, but then they pull back the curtain to offer up these sweeter melodic moments that play upon your expectations of where the song should go. Ultimately, the song embodies a heaviness that reverberates through your home, yet still has this coy little smile beckoning the pop-heads to come hither. The new LP is out Friday via Light Organ Records.

Transy Warhol Share Deceiver, Baby Single

Be it Big Boys or the Dicks or Big Bill, Austin has had its share of jittering punk rock acts through the last several decades, but its time for Transy Warhol to assume their rightful spot on the throne this year. Their latest single has those jagged guitar chops, knifing their way right through your speakers, wiggling and squirming into your inner ear. Meanwhile, Ruby del Mar emphatically growls through the microphone, flirting with the band’s more dangerous side; it’s a great counterpoint to the rhythm section, working with the guitars to add a little bit of pogoing punk rock to the sand. At times you’ll hear the frantic angularity, other times the song embodies more primal tendencies…so you get a little bit of everything in their sound. The group are set to release Control on April 28th!

Holy Wire Releases Forgive Me

If you were keeping an eye on our site Friday, you heard Holy Wire remix a tune from My Favorite, but while dropping tags and what not, I realized I completely failed Alain by not covering his latest single. He was one of my favorite performers at our ATH vs SOTO show, and I’ve really enjoyed his brand of stylish pop. Sure, it’d be easy to lay it down as synth pop, but there’s something in his construction that just feels like so much more than that. His voice just absolutely feels huge and like something that will echo in your brain for some time. Hand down, he’s one of my favorite artists working in the ATX area at the moment, so get on board while this train steams ahead.

Adrian Marner Shares Cracks of Time

This summer Adrian Marner will be releasing The College Years, and I’ve really been marveling at some of the singles coming from the record. His songwriting on the below single seems pretty simple, drawing on the magic of his voice; it reminds me of a strange cross between Elliott Smith and Matt Pryor, so it carries that elegant construction with the faintest hint of the emotive qualities that both those artists put into their voices. Plus, the heavy strum on the mix is something that always gets stuck in my head, as it brings in that level of intimacy that draws you into bedroom recordings and whatnot. My interest in Adrian is piqued, so I’ll be keeping an eye out for The College Years, which drops this summer via Zerowell Records.
