The year’s had some great pop tune, though I’ll be honest, as I’m not quite sure that anything’s really delivered the supreme jangle that I deserve! Well, that all changes today when Salt Lake Alley announce their sophomore LP, on Shelflife no less! From the moment you press play the guitars skate and shimmy, sort of skirting around you speakers as the beat bounces lightly in the background. I love how Mikael and Gustav seem to be trading off vocal roles on this song, adding this real dynamic punch that charms a pop fan like myself. Oh, and please please hang out just pass the 1:37 mark as there’s one hell of a guitar solo just waiting to make you swoon over the hooks. Their new LP, It Takes Two won’t be out until 2022, but you can enjoy the first sample below!

Our good old friend Abram Shook has sure mixed things up since his early days in the Great Nostalgic, with a high energy push towards the purity of pop with his last few releases. Today, we’re sharing the latest single from the Austin songwriter, and it’s definitely a hook-laden toe-tapping jam; if you can’t feel this one, then we’re of no help. Abram’s joined on vocal duties by Camille Lewis of Dead Recipe, layering the song in a playfulness as the two spar back and forth…plus its nice to see Christopher Cox getting in on the mix too! Feeling fragile on Friday, so what better way to immerse myself in like-minded music, such as the new single from Vern Matz. This is the sort of intimate songwriting I adore, where the strums echo like they’re hanging out in the next room and the vocals seem to strain with every drop of emotion left out there. For some reason, this feels like one of those songs that never let you escape, offering you this precious experience that’s likely to crumble to sand once you hit the song’s end. Feel free to play it until your feelings float off far away, and then wait with me as there’s a new Vern Matz tune on the horizon!

Parrot Dream Share Final Single of 2021, The End

I’ve really enjoyed the work Parrot Dream have put into things over the last few singles, and all the way back to their last major release, and it seems they aim to end the 2021 year with one final gem to seduce you into their world. “The End” actually begins opening up on this cavernous emptiness, punctuated by a sampled drum and a thumping pulse. Little notes dance across the horizon, careful not to interfere with the rhythmic nature of the song itself. This is where Christina Appel lets her voice shimmer, calling to the listener like a siren, beckoning. A careful ear will hear the pulse speed up at times, and the cavern is filled with various notes that seem destined to intoxicate. And then its all wrapped up, because ultimately, we’ve come to “The End.”

The Figurants Share Benjo Video

I love stumbling into a band like The Figurants, something that takes you down a wormhole of their catalog, falling further and further in love. Their latest single “Benjo” has all these little nuanced moments that I can’t help but feel charmed to hear. I love the twists and turns of the guitars, slightly twangy, cascading into the horizon. The matter-of-fact vocal delivery is charming, and more so by the deep tonal quality of Matt McClure’s voice. They seem like a band that you kind of keep to yourself, only sharing with those closest to you, or those who you feel need a little extra charm in life. So here I am, sharing their new tune with you, my friends.

New Music from Why Bonnie

It’s always nice to hear from old friends, so here we are with the latest single from Why Bonnie, formerly a staple of Austin’s music scene. This new single is the first thing we’ve heard from the band since their last EP, and the promising vibe here will hopefully make its way onto a new LP. I love how the band hold some resolve in this recording; Blair’s voice rises and seems to sink out this sort of climactic explosion…and to be fair…it’s there, but held back just enough to not overstep the selling point, which is undoubtedly Howerton’s voice. Let’s hope this new single signals more tunes!

Loops & Loops Share Everything Changes

Monday’s always seem perfect for reflection, for wistful longing after restful weekends. So, why not start our musical journey this week with this track from Loops & Loops seems to fit the typical case of the Mondays. As it opens, there’s a huge expanse, waiting to be filled by songwriter Peter Bogolub, who softens the track’s dreamy nature with his voice. When we turn to the chorus, we get to feel the noise of the week entering the picture by way of distorted walls of noise shattering the distance. All in all, we get to begin our week with the perfect amount of balance here, so be sure to set your week straight by listening below.

Whoop Share New Single, Smile

Whoop is a relatively new act out of North Carolina, formed by singer Fal and friends, offering up a mixture of light-hearted pop rock that’s certain to charm us all on this early Friday morning. Of course, we’d be remiss if we didn’t immediately point you towards Fal’s voice; she has this youthful vibrancy that seems both playful and confident, bending syllables to her will. The band work hard to create these riffs that border on jangling guitar rock, giving the song the edge needed to serve as the vessel for the vocals. It’s a fun little ditty to get you going, and if you’re super into it, the band release Whoop! on November 19th via Porcelain Records.

Letting Up Despite Great Faults Share Corners Pressed

What?! Two Letting Up Despite Great Faults posts in two days?! Well, I could have waited to share this new jam with you, as I knew it was coming, but I wanted folks to attend the show in Austin last night. They played well last night, dusting off a bit of the rust to share some of the music they’ve got coming on their forthcoming album, like this tune below. For me, as a fan of the genre, I really love the way the band layers the guitars, sort of weaving these intricate post-punk patterns while Mike Lee’s voice operates like an emotional aloe, soothing listeners. The band are still wrapping up details on the new LP, but we’re just glad they’re back…especially Kent, stomping about the stage with that bass!

Skeggs Drop Bunny Man Video

RayRay and I are both huge fans of Aussie outfit Skeggs, and today the band just drop one of those rippers that you can’t get out of your head; it feels like the sort of anthemic arena rock that everyone who loves a good jam could get behind. Despite the heavy riffs that kick it off, it quickly takes those tones and turns them really light and sunny, which lends itself well to the overall hook. Plus, the video is an homage to the band’s touring manager Bunny Man, and they’re donating all money made from this song to their entire tour crew. So, not only is it a killer pop rock jam, but it’s also got good sentiment. This goes out to all the crews out there!
