Peli Gene Shares Old Tapes

Starting off this Wednesday dreaming a little bit, perhaps wishing I was somewhere else entirely…so it works perfectly that I had this track from Peli Gene hanging about in the old inbox. There’s just something so satisfying about the emotive quality that drops in the moment the guitars crash into the synths in this song’s opening moments. The vocals come across so sedate, relying upon the angular notes of the guitar to force them into altered tones that maximize the melody. It’s pretty simple in its structure, but ultimately it was so satisfying that I just kept coming back to get the sweetness of those guitar tones.

Low Life Share Hammer and the Fist Single

Alright, I know this new Low Life jam came out last week, and I’m thinking it was covered by the sites where the cool kids go, but I love Low Life, so wanted to make sure I had a little bit of coverage for it on my end too. Opening with this discordant experimentation, the tune soon travels into this sort of cavernous feel. Those guitars seem claustrophobic, they’re exploring the nooks and crannies of the song’s space, but there doesn’t seem to be anywhere to go, so they echo in the background. Vocals on this one are heavy, almost forlorn in their presentation, though it all comes across like this distant communication from a parallel world. Yeah, it rules. This tune’s on their new LP, From Squats to Lots, the Agony and XTC of Low Life, out via Goner Records on November 5th.

Chayse Porter Shares Purpling Dawn

I’m a big fan of what Chayse Porter is doing on his latest single from his forthcoming LP, Chay’s Palace. Toying with the structure, he offers this sort of spinning carousel pop, a whirling-dervish of outsider bops. But, just as he’s seduced you with his ringmaster gifts, the song flips over, shockingly bringing in this hook-laden burst of melody that on its own is worthy of your listening pleasure. It’s all dreamy notes and bouncing beats, kicking the chorus into party mode before slinking back into the realm of twisted pop guru. If you’re into it, Chay’s Palace is out via Earth Libraries in December.

Furrows Shares Burial Single

Peter Wagner’s Furrows project will release Fisher King this Friday, and its high time we pay some attention to the songwriter, with the latest single being one of the many highlights we’ve found. In a sense, the construction reminds me a lot of Papercuts, sort of this psychedelic swatch collection, little bits here and there unfolding at each turn; I will say there seems to be a bit more clarity in these tunes, like the focus is purely on the melodic connection between song and listener. In that, you get sort of this effortless ride on the musical waves, never cresting, just sort of bobbing on the sea of life, happy to still be afloat in this mess of a world. Fisher King drops Friday!

Pin Cushion Drop I Don’t Know Why

Been looking for something that could get my day up and rolling, something that could give me that energetic boost to jump into, which is where Long Island’s Pin Cushion come into play. This song opens with a little bit of jumping around, but then it just takes off rolling, sort of giving you that sort of sped up shanty sound…though I’d be lying if I didn’t say I heard a little of Ted Leo in the opening verses. They break it all down in the end, giving more of a thrashing sputter, illustrating they’re not tethered to just one sound, leaving plenty of of room to go this way and that when they’re new album finally comes out! Stay tuned on that front!

Spirit Was Release Stranger to the One

Having been a fan of LVL UP, I’m definitely interested to see what Nick Corbo is doing with his Spirit Was project, particularly as his debut album looms on the horizon. To me, listening through the latest single, it feels like he’s sort of finding his path as he builds the songs. He starts this one off really quietly, almost like a field recording made to be used later, leaving the song fairly open as his vocals begin to take control of things. Textures get added, carefully, however, almost giving the nod to personal discovery as Corbo makes his way through the scenery of his musical world. Suddenly, the riffs that were merely foreshadowing in the song’s opening crash in, giving the track this almost crashing metal feel, though Nick’s voice feels very Bazaan here, providing some lineage to his sound. Definitely enjoyable to see him find his way, even in his own songs. Heaven’s Just a Cloud is out on October 22nd via Danger Collective Records.

Alcopops Release True Bugs Single

We’re a few weeks away from getting to hear the entirety of the new Alcopops release, Devil EP. Today, with this new single, they’ve kind of got me captivated, dropping punishing riffs that blanket these central melodies. At times the band feels like a post-hardcore version of Built to Spill, particularly when it opened it feels like the chorus of “Cars.” But, they bang out this noise, akin to all your favorite “not-quite shoegaze” acts. But, one thing I really am drawn to is the band’s little bits of crisp pop noodling that lurk in this single; I’ll let you follow the breadcrumbs on your own, but this is a jam for sure. Devil EP drops on October 29th.

 

The Lounge Society Share Last Breath

I’ve really been enjoying this new track from The Lounge Society, our first bit of new music from the band since their Silk for the Starving EP. I love how the band seem to always blend a mix of frantic exasperation with melodic calm. This track is no different, at time, pulling on the anxious post-punk with quick drums and a little bit of vocal yelp for emphatic purposes. Quickly, the vocals move back into their casual delivery, moving into the song’s melodic interlude, taking a breather with the listener before bounding back into noisy abandon. This single drops via Speedy Wunderground, who are always ahead of the curve.

Old Man of the Woods Shares Sharks

I’ve really been impressed with the few little trickles of tunes coming from Miranda Elliott’s Old Man of the Woods project. Her work feels like synth pop on the surface, but to me, it feels like she’s crafting these little delicately woven ballads, meant to be shared in secret, only she’s replaced traditional instruments with her synth work. Her voice is powerful enough to carry the weight of the negative space left in the song, though as the tune progresses, you can hear backing vocals overlap just as the beat begins to jump up with a hint of pace. The debut LP, Votives, is out October 15th via Totally Real Records.

Dinner Shares Connection (ft. Molly Burch)

A little bit of Denmark and a little bit of Austin come together on the latest track from Dinner, the project of Anders Rhedin; he’s joined by Texan Molly Burch, who provides these dreamy notes to the new single. This track has a more ethereal quality to it, though perhaps I’m being too influenced by the fog machine visuals drifting across my screen as I listen on repeat. There’s something milling about in Anders performances on this record that’s really moving; he seems to have locked into something that combines his deep tones with a very casual delivery, leaving things feeling more organic, embracing the natural state of his songs. Dream Work is yet another album dropping on October 22nd, courtesy of Captured Tracks.
