Reptaliens Drop I Feel Fine

Another January release I’m excited about here is the new LP from Portland’s Reptaliens. Now, with this record, the full songwriting was paired down to just Cole and Bambi Browning, and while I’ve enjoyed previous releases, the switch in approach seems to have provided the perfect vehicle for Bambi’s voice. There’s just something coyly playful, but also sort of indifferent in the way each lyric is dropped out there into the world. Her performance in the chorus takes on a softer melodic tone, but I think it has a stunning contrast, giving the sound this sort of solid base to carry on its own adventures. Those little nuances included a mix of spaced guitar licks battling for space with the surfier nots, both constantly pushing to keep track with the voice. This is for sure a tune and a half! Multiverse is out on January 21st via Captured Tracks.

Wombo Drop New Single

On the heels of their Keesh Mountain EP, Wombo return with a brand new single…and a tour announcement. I love that the band describes this tune as “the balance between chaos and structure;” it definitely fits with my listening habits. The guitars throughout the song do have that dangerous edge, particularly when the song opens up. But, it’s Sydney Chadwick’s voice that drives the song, letting the guitars and drums work around to create the balancing act while she steadies the ship. Just a really solid tune with these slow burning riffs and smoky vibes that easily sedate you as you kick back and immerse yourself in their latest jam. They’ll be kicking off a nice tour in March of next year that starts at SXSW, then sort of bounces around the middle of the States, so keep an eye out.

Azure Blue Shares Define Your Dreams

To celebrate the 10 year anniversary of Rule of Thirds, Tobias Isaksson and his Azure Blue project share a brand new single, with hints at a future record on the way. This one hits hard immediately, pulling in a pulsing synth beat and these heavy grooves that drive the track forward. The song flirts with a dark edged vibe, though Isaksson’s voice constantly provides a melodic flourish that’s hard to ignore; I love how his vocals always seem to have some calming gravitational pull while the tunes pulse and push around him. For now, we’ll let you enjoy this new tune courtesy of Hybris Records, but we’ll keep you in the loop as we get more info on the new LP.

Marissa Paternoster Shares Final Single from Peace Meter

This Friday Don Giovanni will be dropping Marissa Paternoster‘s proper debut as a solo artist, and we’ve been covering the singles all along the way. I’m excited by the album because I feel like we’re really getting some insight into Paternoster’s life, and while its been there before, it feels much more intimate and relatable in the presentation of this record. Musically, this song seems full, yet stripped down. The mix feels peeled back like the layers of an onion, leaving us with the core that is Marissa’s unique voice driving the emotional pull of the track. Peace Meter drops Friday, so be sure to check it out, grab it, you know, support your favorite artists.

Mister Amiss Share Wish You Never

This Friday, LA’s Mister Amiss will release the Nominal EP, but with that, we’ve got to make sure you get a little taste of what’s in store here. This is good old modern indie pop tunes, employing these jangling guitars that shimmy in the song’s front end, punctuated by light synth notes that hit you in the face. Of course, the melodic balance is necessary, so you get that in the dreamy sensation crafted by the vocal work on this tune, pulled back to allow for space to develop the song as a whole. It’s a feel good jam that can help you kick into Tuesday here!

Hollow Hand Drop New Single

It is a bright, sunny day here in Austin, TX with many of us on vacation, or at the very least, putting in short days as we wind down a brief week. Though he isn’t exactly from the land of sunny mornings, Brighton based Max Kinghorn-Mills, under his recording moniker Hollow Hand, has the perfect new tune for clear skies and hopeful days. His latest, “One Last Summer”, features a sort of folk inspired pop sound harkening back to say CSNY but with more modern Americana vibes like Fruit Bats. Hopefully it brightens your morning.

Kinghorn-Mills reports that this track is the first taste of a new LP in the works. No release date as of yet.

Great Lakes Announce Contenders

You ever stumble into a tune that just makes you nostalgic for home? Well, listening to the Ben Crum’s voice on the new single from Great Lakes had me yearning for that feeling, searching my soul for hints of home. I love how the track toys with Americana vibes, particularly as the voice has a wee bit of twang, but it’s still not afraid to put forth a heavy rock vibe that certainly seems like no easy feat. The guitar work and heavy stomp of the rhythm section often seem to work beneath the song’s surface, bubbling up in the chorus, jamming in the interludes, and dragging the song with a heavier hand across the finish land. If you’re into good tunes that feel like comfort food, then jam out here, and look for Contenders when it hits in February 4th via HHBTM.

Semi Trucks Share Thank You

Next week, LA’s Semi Trucks will release their new Vs. California album via Meritorio Records, and with that, we get another track to entice you to give it some notice. Listening here, there’s this ramshackle home recording vibe, or lo-fi as the kids like to call it. In a way, it sounds like some sort of fusion between a Beat Happening record and maybe something fuzzier from the UK in the late 80s; I can even hear folks drawing some David Berman comparisons on the vocals. One thing is for sure…this tune’s the sort that kind of catches you off guard, stands out amidst the rest of the noise, then you hold it closely as you listen on repeat for years to come. Grab the whole LP next week!

His His Shares In the Wind

The air in Austin got a little crisp overnight, and with a holiday break on the horizon, well, my students are mentally already there. So, to prepare myself, I needed something a little soothing and calm, which is great because I’ve been sitting on this great new His His tune for a few days now. There’s something in the guitar play that recalls Kings of Convenience, but it also has this unique knack of adding in these little bedroom pop details that elevate the tune. It’s one of those songs you just want to sit with for a bit, kind of ride out the storm of your life with the track lurking in the background.

Salt Lake Alley Announce It Takes Two

The year’s had some great pop tune, though I’ll be honest, as I’m not quite sure that anything’s really delivered the supreme jangle that I deserve! Well, that all changes today when Salt Lake Alley announce their sophomore LP, on Shelflife no less! From the moment you press play the guitars skate and shimmy, sort of skirting around you speakers as the beat bounces lightly in the background. I love how Mikael and Gustav seem to be trading off vocal roles on this song, adding this real dynamic punch that charms a pop fan like myself. Oh, and please please hang out just pass the 1:37 mark as there’s one hell of a guitar solo just waiting to make you swoon over the hooks. Their new LP, It Takes Two won’t be out until 2022, but you can enjoy the first sample below!
