Another Gem from Arc in Round

In late April I brought you one of the tunes off of Arc in Round‘s self-titled album, and since the record just came out this week, we’re going to toss up another gem for you get behind. This tune is called “One-Sided,” and I love the way the guitar discordantly works in the background, fighting for space with the lofty female vocals (which have a unique echo effect).  Once again, the group’s used some great texturing to their work, creating a sound that’s definitely pop-centric, but shows the abilities of band’s that can incorporate layer upon layer to create gems such as this.

You can get the S/T album from La Societe Expeditionnaire.

New Tunes from Yeasayer

As we draw closer and closer towards the release of the new Yeasayer album, Fragrant World, which comes out in August via Secretly Canadian, more tracks are starting to hit the Internet, building a swell of excited fans. The first track “Henrietta” was definitely a summer banger built for grooving.  This round, the group seems to have a more soulful approach, unfolding a bit slower.  It’s definitely a different spin on the group’s electro art pop, but I admit that I’m really feeling this jam…so I’m sure that the rest of the Internet will be clamoring for more Yeasayer.  A few short months and we can all have the whole record in our hands.

New (ish) Single from Useless Eaters

Feel like today could get too poppy if I don’t throw something deliciously heavy on the mix, so I’m glad I got my new Useless Eaters 7″ today.  The band just recently released their Addicted to the Blade single, and it looks like they’ve already got other things in the mix, but let’s focus on this jam.  There’s a bit of an echo in the vocals, giving off a dark vibe to the stomping rhythm of the track…and it all leads into the great chorus that makes the song an absolute winner. Oh, and did I mention they blew us away recently when they played with Ty Segall? All things point towards the positive for this group, so go and order your copy of the single from Tic Tac Totally!

Great Track from Plateaus

After catching a show with Plateaus last month, I’ve been putting them on my daily play rotation, tapping my feet all the while.  They recently (end of May) put out this killer single I wanted to share with you, and I’ll point you to another great track as well. They’ve got this real low-key punk rock vibe, that’s as gritty as it is infectious.  You can buy their 7″ for this song from Hozac, but there’s also a great gem coming out soon from Art Fag Recordings, which you should pick up HERE.  The band will have an album out in the Fall, but for now, enjoy the jams.

Great New Single from Alpaca Sports

One of my favorite discoveries of the last year has been Sweden’s Alpaca Sports.  The duo creates hook-laden pop that dares you to play the songs just once; I promise you that’s not a possibility.  Lucky for all of us the group has been kind enough to let us stream their new single, “She’ll Come Back for Indian Summer,” which I sincerely hope is a Beat Happening reference.  You can get your hands on the digital single on June 20th via Luxury, and then you’ll have it on your own stereo to play over and over again.  Keep your eye on these guys, as there’ definitely going to be more gems from them coming our way soon. Also, you can check out a video for the single that just went up today by clicking HERE.

Fun Rocker from Finn Riggins

I first brought you Finn Riggins earlier in the year as the group was preparing to release their Benchwarmers EP, and they’re back again with another single to get you interested.  This tune features gang vocals from the trio, bouncing rhythms and steady drumming.  I don’t know what it is about these guys, they just seem to get under my skin, in an endearing way of course. There’s even a little jam in the middle, followed by more enjoyable rock moments.  If you’re on the West, the group heads out on tour, though they unfortunately won’t be making it into Austin just yet.

Folk Jam from Communist Daughter

I’m really falling in love with this new song from Communist Daughter, which just popped up yesterday.  The group is the project of Johnny Solomon, who has been working the scene in Minneapolis, but this new track should help him reach out to a broader audience. For me, I love the way he delivers the vocals, casual and heartfelt; I also have to admit that I love the lyrics themselves.  You’ll find gentle backing vocals and strummed guitar to make the song come to life.  Pick up your copy of this song, and more, on the band’s Lions & Lambs EP, which hits stores on July 10th.

Great New Track from The Couch

We’re really excited for our friends in The Couch here in Austin, working diligently on their sophomore album, just after the release of 2011’s Old & Touchin Blue.  They’ve added Sara Houser to the mix, giving the band a bit of a new dynamic–meaning they’ve added an incredible female vocalist to the mix.  I this track, one of the two new singles, they give us a bit of a heavy stomp, allowing Sara to lay her sultry voice atop it all.  You can hear this single and others when the band hits up the Mohawk next week, June 5th.  Really excited for these guys (and girls!).

New Jam from PUJOL

When we caught PUJOL at SXSW this year I was surprisingly energetically his set came off; he was more punk rock than garage pop.  But, as the date draws near for the release of his United States of Being, which hits on June 5th via Saddle Creek, it seems that he’s going to show a bit more restraint on his recorded material.  There’s a gruffness to his vocal performance, but he’s not banging out the song like when we caught his live set.  This isn’t a bad thing, and if anything, it only ups the ante on his shows…giving audiences a full dosage of energy and pop.  Check out the new single.

Gorgeous New Track from Tara Jane O’neil

It’s nice to find a tune that regardless of its lyrical content, it forces you to look at your like with a bit of introspection.  I don’t know what it is, but this new song from Tara Jane Oneil has put me in this ultra-reflective mode today…I’m actually okay with that as I near the end of my time with 120 13 year olds.  This single is the A-Side to TJO’s newest release on K Records, which also features “Rainbow Connection” as the B-Side.  Tara sounds incredible here, and I can’t do much more than just fall in love with her voice at this time.  Hopefully you find a similar sentiment when you listen, and if so, be sure to pick it up at the K Store.
