New TAGABOW Album On Its Way

If you have yet to be caught up in the hype surrounding They Are Gutting a Body of Water, you’ll be pleased to know that this is one of the rarer instances where the hype is fitting. They greet you with a trickle of guitar, then they break the door down with a wall of feedback and distortion, quietly sneaking vocals in behind the barrage of melodic noise. Once the tune opens, the guitars dance carefully, almost as if they’re careful of stepping on the vocal portion of the tune; the group gets to hang hear before riding another crest of noise to the close. Their new LP, Lotto, will be out on October 17th.

Fortitude Valley Share Oceans Apart

A surefire way to catch my ear is by making a slight nod to the Go-Betweens, and that’s exactly what Fortitude Valley have done with their latest single, “Oceans Apart.” It’s the third and final single from their forthcoming record, and it’s a solid pop rock ripper, the sort that we love to just push to the top. There’s nothing fancy, save for some of the guitar soloing, but it’s got a classic driving rhythm and the vocals are the perfect fit, never rushing the song. Simple, sweet and with a sprinkle of an edge…all the things that are going to put you in love with Part of the Problem, dropping August 1st via Specialist Subject Records.

Sunny Garage Rock from Acapulco Lips

The humidity down here is something else right now, as we have been living in a mixture of heat and rain, so this new track from Acapulco Lips feels like the best way weather accompaniment. This new jam kicks off with a wiggling bit of psychedelia, but once that wriggle shakes out, the tune moves into a pop garage rock vibe. Maria-Elena’s voice takes this nostalgic tilt, hitting on some of the classic doo-wop notes, aligning the twists and turns with a little bit more pop than some might expect. They balance it perfectly too, twisting between the psychedelic dens and the party-going beach, but you’ll have to keep an eye out for Now in order to hear which voice wins out; it drops on Friday.

The Living Pins Drop Gold Video

I love a band that offers no bullshit. They get up on the stage, turn up the amps and just rock it out, much like you get when you catch the Living Pins. Their recorded music is much the same, as you’ll hear in their latest single. The band notes that the tune takes its roots in a bit of classic rock sound, but as the vocals hit with those stuttering riffs, there was something that felt like a rocking version of Alanis Morissette, which I actually think is really cool. The rhythm section holds the swagger, letting the edges kind of get fuzzy with psychedelic tinges and feedback while the rest of the group just give you straightforward rock. Give a listen, won’t you.

Day Friend Drop Blackout Single

Over the last year or so we’ve been hyping up Austin act Day Friend; they played our SXSW show with SOTO, then dropped the rad “Brainworm” single. Today, there’s a fresh tune that I’m particularly excited about; it’s got a bit more of a pensive post-punk nature, taking time to stretch out the guitar sound a bit. But, don’t think they’ve gone soft as the cymbals and drums still smash through the mix, and you can hear this slight little growl on the vocals. But, if you stick around, you get to hear a little plot twist, which is one of the many reasons I love the group, as they take on more of an explorative psychedelic beat blasting off towards the track’s close. Be sure you jam this one.

Michael Beach Releases I’m Gonna Need Ya Video

I will admit that when news broke of a fresh Michael Beach record, I wasn’t sure where he would be going with his new sound. I knew I’d like it no matter where he went, musically speaking, but man, his troubadour performance on this number is pretty special. Of course, being a man about Australia, he’s gathered some really special artists to bulk up his sound, as you can hear in every little detail filling out the space throughout this new tune. There’s a little bit of blues in there, but also kind of a hint of solitary songwriter, like a Cohen. While the sobering theme and sound are omnipresent, the song gets a lift and a rattle around the 3 minute mark, where Beach reminds folks that “I’m gonna need ya!” Big Black Plume is out July 25th via Goner/Poison City Records.

Thanks Light Return with the Valley

It was just a few weeks ago when Austin band Thanks Light were making RayRay and I nostalgic with their ode to Costa Rica. And, they’re right back at it with another fresh single from the current cycle, this one hitting more of a traditional indie folk sound. You get a steadily marching drum to open the tune, awaiting its union with light strings and a barroom piano line; it’s subtly uplifting, yet solemn once the heavier tones from the vocals sweep into the picture. They ride those moments up until the chorus, where gang vocals lift you up so as to swing you right back into the tilt-a-whirl feel of the verses. Another solid number from the ATX homies.

Juan Wauters Shares Mutuacion Video

I think the first time I covered Juan Wauters was in the way way back, stretching back to 2013; his music was poetic and inspiring, and at the time, fell right in line with the indie scene. But, since those early recordings, we’ve seen Juan jump towards his routes, discovering the rich history of his own Latin American heritage and then incorporating it into his remarkable craft. A little over a week ago he dropped MVD LUV, an album he recorded from his birthplace in Uruguay; it’s an album that illustrates his history and his current trajectory. There was something in the guitar of of the tune below that reminded me of early Cohen, albeit with this Latin balladry tethered. I beg you to listen in to the lyrical moment that kicks off at 1:20, as its one of the most special moments here that sets the tune into this celebratory mood. MVD LUV is available now via Captured Tracks.

Checking In on Brown Lemon

There are just too many email to keep track, but I’ve been certainly geared towards an indie rock sound today, so why not plot twist and turn towards a bit of solid electronica. Brown Lemon will release their new effort Live from Jam Jail in a few weeks, and their electronic construction is everything I love about the genre. While the snap of the drum samples give the tune a slight lift at the opening, the bass and the dancing keys do the work to build an undercurrent of bounce. Like a painting, the tune moves forward as the group layer colors and brush strokes to build the texture into this immense electronic soundscape like all the early Holodeck Records band did. Just get lost in the movement of the tune, and look for the new record on July 25th.

BRNDA Share Peach Pit + Announce Total Pain

When it rains it pours, and today is one of those days when there’s just a nonstop influx of sweet jams making it into my old inbox, like DC lot BRNDA who’ve just announced Total Pain today. It’s really hard to pigeonhole their sound too, making the opening banger all the more special. I can hear some remnants of the noisier indie rock stylings of maybe a Sonic Youth or Yo La Tengo, but there’s a bigger pop brand bubbling beneath the surface of this one. There’s also this infectious sort of chant the group go through twice in the tune, and the execution of that moment just cements the hook you’re going to endure when you crank this one up. Total Pain is out on September 12th via Crafted Sounds.
