Screensaver Share Permanence Video

Late last year, Melbourne’s Screensaver released Decent Shapes, which we covered quite a bit over here. Now, they’ve just dropped this terrific new single to encourage folks in Europe to prepare for their August invasion. When the song storms in, you’re sort of feeling the band stalk you, kind of bouncing back and forth in each ear with screeching guitar lines and punishing drum work. But, when you get to the 1 minute mark, the chorus begins to offer the true nature of the song, feeding you this post-punk brilliance that reminds you of acts like Wax Idols or Dehd. Just because this tune brims with pop sensibility, the danger is never far away, consistently lurking in the corners, waiting to crash upon you. If you’re in Europe, you better be ready. If not, just crank it up!

Club 8 Release Getting By

Swedish outfit Club 8 have been dropping some bangers this year, just hitting play on single after single. But, I think “Getting By” might be my favorite of the hits they’ve pushed our way. Thumping percussion and stabbing guitar licks quickly get your body in the mood, setting up this happy discord that swallows your soul until just after the 30 second mark where the whispering vocals enter from stage left to balance out the world. There’s this punctuated moment before the 2 minute mark that builds the wall of noise, but only briefly, as the band clearly prefer their melodic nature to remain the central focus. Crank it up and enjoy another perfect pop piece.

Anders Jornesten Shares On the Outskirts of Town

Admittedly, I was surprised to hear this new single from Anders Jornesten and realize the songwriter was from Sweden (name aside of course); his sound feels like something you’d find at any number of folk festivals here in the States. For me, the songwriting was solid as it gets, but the vocal inflections that were slight carried the song through my ears. I loved the way the pitch kind of has this hiccup in it when he delivers “on the outskirts of town,” with the word “town” yanking at my heart in its curl. If you’re seeking a striking voice to start your Monday, then press play below.

Ghost Fan Club Shares Love Bug + Drops New EP

We’ve already teased the release of Ghost Fan Club for a couple of singles, and now we offer you one final reason to invest in the group’s new EP, officially out today! Opening up your ears, you’ll find a lightness to the song’s craft, as it’s a trickling bit of guitar and whispering vocals billowing through your speakers; they add in some textured percussion and a little grooving synth line to flesh things out. Around the 1:50 mark you get a little directional change, bringing in a kind of emphatic little midtrack stomp that wiggles in some variation before settling back into the bread and butter of the band’s craft. Enjoy the single below and adventure into the depths of the EP HERE.

I Was a King Share Brand New Single

It’s Friday, and there’s nothing better than wrapping yourself up in a blanket of melodic pop, such as Norway’s I Was a King offer on their latest single. Frode and Anna Lise are the absolute stars here, with the light jangling and tinkering piano lurking quietly in the background; they’re clearly hanging out in the song, with the piano sparkling in its work, though they, too, are in awe of the majestic powers of the vocal work this go round. A forlorn bit of guitar slides in between the cracks, all of it giving this textured blend of classic power pop that confirms our belief that I Was a King is one of the best power-pop acts around. We’ve been promised there will be more new music from the group as the year goes forward, so more great Friday news!

World Brain Share Open

Clearly spacing out and drifting into the ocean waters is heavily on my brain at the moment, thus why finding this tune from World Brain was perfect. It felt like this typical ambient piece, which I quite liked as the vibe was right in line with mine. But, then the vocals crept into the picture, and the keys stroked a higher pitch, reminding me of Air in a sense, pulling more jazz and lounge influences into the fold; it’s perfectly fitting for sitting around the pool with a nice chilly beverage in your hand. Enjoy letting this wash over you.

Required Red Sleeping Beauty Listening

Every day at the beginning of each month, you’re asked (and encouraged) to indulge in the new single from Swedes Red Sleeping Beauty; they continue to crank out a song a month for all you pop aficionados. This one’s all sugar, instantly intoxicating inclined listeners with the vibrant melody that opens into bright harmonizing as the whole team joins in; there’s a brief moment when it almost feels like they’re channeling early New Pornographers with Neko singing…it has that sort of charm to it. It’s brief and shiny, like a new toy that you’ll want to wear out in a matter of days…but rest assured they’ll (and we’ll!) be back to report on it in August!

Don Giovanni Signs Mechanical Canine

Seeing as we dropped a review of the ever-emo band Say Anything, it only makes sense that we check in on Philly’s emo-punk scene with some love for Mechanical Canine. Today, the group announce they’ve signed with Don Giovanni Records, offering up a spirit pop punk number that warrants a cranked up stereo. If you get it loud enough, you likely will feel some familiar vibes going through this, as the band seem to be channeling a more emo version of “Kids in America,” though I can’t tell if they’re coming at it from the Muffs or Kim Wilde side here. Still, the chorus and the drum fills in that section add some rocking punch that supersedes any like-mindedness…and its still a fun as hell tune to crank up loud. Keep any eye out for their new LP, To My Chagrin!

Nightshift Share Sure Look

Nightshift‘s forthcoming Homosapien record is definitely one of two hotly anticipated LPs coming from the Trouble in Mind stable, and today we get another single that hurtles us into the dense pop realm these Glaswegians have built. This tune lurks in a cavernous pop space, with the discordant guitar sounds seeping down the walls while the drum work controls the pacing and the vocals. Eothen Stearn is allowed to work playfully through the verses while the drums sit back, but when they rush, it hurtles the track forward, forcing Stearn to keep pace too, reminiscent of some of the great pop pieces Love is All put together. Homosapien drops on July 26th!

Dress Warm Release Backyard Single

We’ve been covering Dress Warm for a few year’s now, watching as the Austin trio found their musical footing. With their latest tune, you get this feeling that they’re finally settling into their skin. There’s this fragility that remains, particularly in the vocals, crafting this earnestness that’s capable of bewildering listeners. At the moment, I’m enjoying the way they’ve buoyed the sound, adding in textural strokes that move the song beyond just mere songwriter craft, then continue to grow that power into the track as it moves towards its close. Stoked to see what they’re working on, as this sounds like some of their strongest vibes.
