If you missed the olden days of slacker rock, might we remind you that you have new heroes ahead in LP Gavin. They definitely pull out some tricks from the Pavement back catalog, though it gets reimagined in a new presentation. You’ll find the reclining verses coiled around these emphatic punches of grungy pop rock; I like to think there’s just a bit more pulling on the reins, which allows the hook to really sail through the speakers. Hard to find that perfect balance between bursts and bops, but they’re pulling it off successfully below. Trials, Tribulations, Deliberations, Pratfalls, Reprieves, Etc is out February 28th via Repeating Cloud and Safe Suburban Home.

Shrapnel Share One More Single

You only have to wait a handful of days before Shrapnel unveil their latest LP, and we’ve been helping cover as much as we can on the lead up, and now there’s one final peek under the covers. This number has this sharpness that pushes some bravado, though their melodic vocal mixture belies their natural pop sensibility. They begin to push that more and more as the track progresses, which ultimately takes the tune into the psychedelic territory; it then becomes apparent you’ve been on this mystical journey all along, only you had no idea where they were taking you until they come back in with a punchy drop of riffs that ride off onto the horizon. Sedan Center is out Friday via Tenth Court.

Mauger Shares There Goes Your Man

Belgian artist Mauger has popped up on this site on several occasions, and the latest track feels like a great start to the week, from my ears anyways. When it begins, there’s a gentle softness, almost a kind of coy little croon that slinks into fragile indie pop. Then, you get a little plot twist with a nice little nod from the electronic belly, setting up the chorus with this perfect little twist that delivers that emotional connection you’ve been seeking. He’s still wrapping up the pieces to his new record, so keep an eye out for more in the very near future.

Shapes Like People Release Ambition Is Your Friend

Are you one of those music nerds that feels your body sway when you get some crisp guitar jangles in your ear? Yea? Well, you’re going to crank the new Shapes Like People tune super loud, as the opening 20 seconds alone will have you smilingly drifting through your home with arms out wide like some soaring bird. I’d have been sold alone there, but they swirl back into that moment, enjoying a bit of melodic power pop warmth, offering you the most soothing vocal pop moment you’ll get to hear today. Crisp guitars, swirling melodies, and all of it in this nice little package that will make your day! You can find this single on their forthcoming Ticking Haze LP, out this March.

Frog Share Mixtape Liner Notes Var. VII

Grog brought a lot of success and praise to New York outfit Frog, so how do you follow that up? Well, you release a record titled 1000 Variations on the Same Song, one of which you get to hear below. This one lives in a sort of folk-rock adjacent warehouse, like the makings of an early Modest Mouse demo, particularly as they use the banjo as dominant musical element here. But, the chorus it’s some super high notes, dropping in the range like some sort of mega pop star; it adds a layer that you’ve come to expect from Frog recordings, taking your expectations of indie rock and stretching them to wherever the wind will blow. Audio Antihero will drop the 1000 Variations… on February 14th.

MIEN Announce Evil People

I love a good supergroup, especially when its made up acts we already love…and bonus points if it features Austin folks. So, here’s MIEN, which features members of Black Angels, Golden Dawn Arkestra, Elephant Stone and Earlies…all who’ve been regulars here, and now they’ve got a new album, Evil People. This new single is like a proto-psych; it’s filled with these pulsing notes and shattering guitar squalls, yet just as I thought the tune was pigeon-holed, they mix it up and move into different territory after the two minute mark, taking on a melodic moment to let the song breathe and open up. Looking forward to seeing where this album goes; MIIEN comes out on April 18th via Fuzz Club.

Jo Passed Drops Weekend

It’s been quite some times since Jo Passed dropped any new music…and to be fair, the song today is one of, if not THE, first Jo Passed song. That said, the tune’s had its own journey, finally being reimagined after its initial creation in order to prep audiences for a fresh record on the way. Throughout, the jam walks a fine line between soft-spoken narrative and moody rocker; it’s that balance that sets up repeat listens as you get to ride the crests and falls of the tune as it blasts in all the right spots. Plus, there’s some fun musicianship that indicates we’re in for a real treat when that new album comes to light!

Gus Baldwin and the Sketch Tell Us What the Freaks Say

Up until now, we’ve been presented with Gus Baldwin and the Sketch terrorizing your speakers; they’ve brought frantic pop to the masses, hyperactively rushing through quick bursts of punk. But, on their brand new single, the band open the door to reveal the chewy pop middle of their punk lollipop. It’s a bold statement amidst a rocking run of tunes, and while they do touch into some power ballad moments, there’s still that bit of tenacity lurking through the song’s end. This will give us all a chance to take a breath when we crank the Sketch all the way to 10 (11 is too cliche); they’ll also be touring the Eastern US throughout April!

Split Moon Drop More Clouds Single

Having been mostly quiet the last few years, Split Moon return with a spaced out jam that hints at their forthcoming record, hitting some of the sweet spots of their last LP then letting those sound radiate into something fresh. From the get-go, there’s this guitar line cascading on the horizon, shooting in across the sky while a steady riff delivers the backbone of the song. The vocals move in carefully, with a slight melodic nod to the Jesus and Mary Chain, then letting the tune burst and bloom into an arrogant bit of space rock before returning the song back to Earth. They’ll drop More Clouds More Stars on March 7th via Ghost Tower Records.

Rattle Share Ritual Video

Nottingham’s drumming duo, Rattle, have a new record coming out on February 28th, and their latest single, which is the album’s opener, is as hypnotic as it’s title would indicate. They quickly settle into their musical groove, offering up eerie vocal notes that echo and then disappear into the air, perhaps a nod to the track’s influence, the Boleskin House in Scotland. Things operate in a similar territory through the first minute, until a verse enters with the refrain “a part of who you are” rings out. They begin to add more texture, working in cymbals as well as the vocals to the tune, fleshing things out beyond five minutes. You can grab their Encircle LP via Upset the Rhythm on February 28th.
