Flight Mode Share Surprised At All

After the determined success of their Tx 98 EP, we expected big things from Oslo’s Flight Mode, especially after they signed up with Tiny Engines for the release of their new LP. Personally, I love how this new track shows the band’s evolution over the past few years; things began in a very 90s emo-centric realm, but they’ve moved into a more progressive pop rock outfit, albeit one that still adheres to some of the structural moments in that early emo movement. I mean, just check out the chorus on this tune, filled with melody, twisting in a bit of a sharp edge to add that perfect punch as the song explodes through your ears. The Three Times will be officially out on February 2nd!

Snailosaur Share Darkness + Release Talk Therapy

If you’re going to drop in a classic post rock style jam, what better way to follow that up than with a nice bit of classic indie rock sounds, a la Snailosaur. The band just released a new record titled Talk Therapy, and I hope this tune can turn you onto their work, as it’s the perfect exemplar of the LP’s style. Just imagine Bill Callahan turning Smog into something of a kind of rock tour de force, taking his introspective work and allowing it to unfold in the realm of quietloudquiet; it’s personal and explosive and I absolutely stomp around for a minute wailing on my air guitar as the tune rung out. Get you a taste.

Dead Bandit Share Peel Me An Orange

Before pressing play, just stop. Take a breath. Clear your mind for a moment and prepare yourself for Dead Bandit. For nearly two minutes, you get to go on an aural journey, as the duo construct this little sound collage that warbles and warps the edges of your mind. Just as you’ve completely begun to drift, drums roll in and cymbal work pulls you back towards the song’s center. Bits of guitar fade in and out of your conscience as washes of atmosphere circle your ears before everything fades back into obscurity. Quindi will release Memory Thirteen on Ferbruary 9th.

Tractor Beam Share Fresh Single

Having just released a great LP last summer, Vancouver’s Tractor Beam are ready to drop in with a fresh EP of new music. There’s something about the band’s that always feels John K Samson adjacent, yet there exists this light-hearted nature that I continue to find endearing. For instance, I love the light backing vocals and the dueling guitar work that courses through this new one. You won’t find studio magic or anything other than old-fashioned sincerity, and in that, the band execute so well you’ll just press play over and over again. Early Reflections is out this Friday!

Canalss Share $$$ Eyes Single

Florida’s Canalss have graced these pages from time to time over the last year, and with their debut LP on the horizon with Zerowell Records, I’m really stoked to share their latest single below. In a lot of ways, it sounds like the world of Bright Eyes circa Every Day and Every Night, but spun through the lens of the legend we call “Florida-man.” It’s got a bit of absurdity and outsider syndrome, but there’s something about the magic within the confines of it all that draws you into the intimate little corners of the song where secrets are revealed. If you’ve dug on anything from Coma Cinema to Elf Power to Conor Oberst, you’re going to really fall in love below. Done Sleeping is out March 1st.

Veronicavon Share Party Single

Supreme Billy Madison fans Veronicavon are readying their forthcoming LP, Deep End, with the latest single prepped to ease you into your Friday listening routine. The tune has a steady march to it, carefully utilizing a continuous groove that locks you into the track as you turn the volume up. Naturally, there’s a building tension throughout the song, but, Xuan Nguyen’s vocals allow the track to hang in a stationary setting, focusing on the wordplay and the vibe of what they’re trying to get you to enjoy. It’s low key in the best way, so look for Deep End to drop on February 9th via Born Losers.

Careen Share Last Winter Video

Even after running this site for nearly 15 years now, there’s still just so much music to discover that you’ve got rely upon friends to keep you in the loop now and then. For me, that’s how I heard about Careen, when a friend sent an email encouraging us to listen to this new EP; the email name-checked Unwound, among others, so having just recently seen them, I was like yeah, lets do this! My two cents to offer is that the tune works in two phases; a traditional underground fare then a bit of sonic exploration. I gravitated towards the immediacy of the first phase, as the vocalist in the verses sounds like classic Thurston, up until the emphatic vocal bursts tear through speakers. That back side toys with the same sonic territory, but it’s employing space and limited vocal bits to let the tune completely evolve into its own realm. Cool jams, so look for Cycle 3 on February 23rd via Death Metal Florida.

The Umbrellas Share One More Single

Fairweather Friend is out in a few weeks, so if you haven’t grabbed a copy of the latest LP from the Umbrellas, we suggest you get behind it, particularly for those adhering to the world of exuberant indiepop. Their last single before the new record rushes in with a furious roll of the drums before jangling guitar lines hit your eardrums. Success in this tune revolves around the band’s employment of juxtaposed harmonizing; vocalists trading back and forth then uniting creates a dizzying world of pop that’s begging you to get lost inside. Join us in getting lost in the new LP, which drops January 26th via Slumberland.

Torrey Share No Matter How + Announce Debut for Slumberland Records

It’s going to be a busy day on the Slumberland front, as there’s rumor of a fresh Umbrellas tune floating about today as well, but for now, let’s turn our attention to the label’s newest signee (that we know of), Torrey. With a handful of solid releases under their belt (check out Something Happy), the group present us with the first single from their self-titled LP. Hazy washes of guitar sweep you in immediately, letting the vocal melodies seep through the speakers; the tune would be a fine-enough track at this point. Yet, they’re not satisfied, jumping down on the pedals to hit you with a wall of noise, still centered around sweetened vocal delicacies. You’ll even find a nice little musical oasis in the middle, breezy and light, illustrating just how much work the band have put into these new songs. Torrey will be released on March 8th!

Velcros Share Troubled Mind

When German outfit Velcros sent an email that described their latest single as “Big Star on an adrenaline rush,” I absolutely had to check it out. They’re not far off here either, rushing through this fuzzy scuzzy punk rock ditty, filled to the brim with all sorts of musical gems. It’s crazy to me how well they pull of the pop-centric middle of the tune with all that fury thundering around them. If you’re able to keep pace with their 192 beats per minute rock anthem, you’re welcome to sing along! But, if you just want to jam, grab Strange News From the Vault when it drops on March 22nd!
