Henrik Appel Offers Nothing to Lose

Already being a fan of Henrik Appel won’t set you up for his powerful new ballad; it’s something wholly enchanting, of the sort that you let close down your night. There’s also this sense of grandeur in the craft, using a huge piano track and Appel’s cooled delivery to create this intimate bravado. At times, it feels like a B-side on a Rolling Stones record, easily slipping into a more subtle format that highlights the elegant craft Henrik’s pulled off this go round. Really looking forward to spending a few hours with Shadows; the record drops on November 1st via PNKSLM.

Tunng Announce Love You All Over Again

When I look over my various musical tastes, I generally don’t consider folktronica to be something that really brings me in…that is unless we’re talking about Tuung. To me, the UK outfit, sounds like a version of Architecture in Helsinki that you might listen to at a Renaissance Faire. They love overlapping melodies, combining and pulling apart from one another to build a bit of contrast, using the electronic elements to texturize the track and even add just a little playfulness to the entirety. Honestly, if I were to film a tale of fairies in a futuristic setting, I sure as hell hope this lot would do the score; it’s whimsical and sophisticated, and I’m penciling in Love You All Over Again for a release to keep an eye on when it drops in January of next year!

Dustin James Shares Paper Star

As we draw nearer the Winter season, we’re all likely looking for music to hibernate to, music you can wrap around you and find warmth and solace. Today, that music has come early, by way of Dustin James; he’s released the first single and title track from the forthcoming Paper Star LP. There are overlapping guitar lines, one sort of like a journeying leaf, floating through the stream of strumming that holds the track together; they intermingle, dancing and swirling together atop a quieted beat. James’ vocals, too, feel like a rolling seasonal change, hanging on the edge of the cold, beckoning to come inside and sit by the fire. Paper Star drops on October 22nd.

Pets Share Fixed Taunt

There were a few sprinkles of Austin act Pets that came to my attention (you can check them by clicking on the band’s hyperlink). But, with that being said, I didn’t expect the band to come out of the gate and rule like this new single does. They’re operating with this melodic dissonance, oftentimes working with this speediness that evolves into blissed out moments of an ethereal nature…particularly when the vocals seem to just hang in the air, almost lifelessly, before crashing back into the core of the song. If you’re driving around Austin, looking to find what rips, well, this is it. Crank it up and dig in. Hopefully there’s more real soon!

Lily Seabird Signs to Lame-O Records

After the excellent Alas dropped, it makes sense that Vermont’s Lily Seabird would pop up more often in the scene, and with that, she’s announced today that she’s signed with Lame-O Records. The label will reissue that LP, with a bonus Acoustic EP, featuring two new songs, one which we’ve got below. You’ll press play, then you’ll be hurtled into the depths of the songwriting, as careful strums accent the striking vocal performance; it has this huge personality, though if you listen carefully, you can almost hear the vocals as they’re pulled from the depths of Lily’s soul. If you. missed Alas, then you can stream it all HERE. The reissue will be out on November 15th.

Alpaca Sports Return with Tomorrow I’ll Be Fine

It’s been a minute since we last heard from Swedish popsters, Alpaca Sports, but they return in a huge way on their brand new single. They’re channeling that soulful jangle that most folks associated with Sarah or C86, and while I can certainly hear those moments shining through, the vocal harmonies craft something a lot more recent. To me, and I’m only one person, they kind of seem like the culmination of studying the melodic constructs of Pains of Being Pure at Heart; they strip the structure in order to offer the saccharine side, leaving us with this glittery pop gem that is currently stuck bouncing inside my head. We’re being told there’s a new album on the horizon, courtesy of Elefant.

Slack Times Share Coattails Single

Looking back again at last week’s great releases, we felt like we couldn’t let Meritorio Records hog all the headlines, so we saved this Slack Times track for you, as nothing is likely to sweeten a ditty from this trio. After a little bit of a lineup change, they’ve really honed in on their craft, taking a walk down the slow-burning that resembles a bit of the fog-pop scene of current San Francisco, or maybe even the nostalgic wayward jangles of Galaxie 500. Honestly, if there’s anything to be upset about, it’s the fact that their new Gone Things EP only has 4 songs; it drops on Friday!

Max Bien Khan Shares Stranger Single

When I pressed play on Max Bien Khan‘s new single, there was something instantly warming, something that felt like home to me. Working over what sounds like sampled drum bits, Max begins to narrate a story a wandering soul who finally finds a companion with the need for like-minded wanderings. A light strum and subtly beautiful pieces of arrangement bring the track to life, leaving the listener with something that smells a hint like M. Ward, though a bit more left of the dial, if you ask us. Keep an eye out for Flowers, the new LP, which drops on November 1st.

Kim Deal Dazzles in A Good Time Pushed

Admittedly, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from Kim Deal‘s new stuff. Sure, she’s an absolute legend, and to be fair, I’ve got few reasons to doubt her craft…still, we’ve seen some folks drop the ball on their return. This is absolutely not the case for Kim, however, as she’s dropped another remarkable single that feels as vitally important to the current industry as her work was back when that one band she was in was huge (and then that other one too). I love the build in this song, the guitars growl beneath her voice, perfectly setting up the rising action to climax at “we are having a good time.” It balances with the really special rhythmic bubbling beneath, which comes as no surprise considering her bass-playing bad-assery. Nobody Loves You More is out on November 22nd via 4AD.

Solid Blood Shares Western Sun + Drops New EP

I had really hoped to get this new EP from Solid Blood up on Friday so you could spend your Bandcamp dollars in the right place, but alas, I got caught up in the State Fair with my kids, so I didn’t quite get to it. Needless to say, the Houston project just dropped the Western Sun EP, and the album’s title track is certainly something that fans of the dream pop/gaze genre are going to swarm towards. On my end, there’s something fairly distinct, as the music at times feels akin to the early boisterousness of Broken Social Scene, though spun through walls of feedback, and simultaneously grasps at something that feels wholly Texas. Pretty special way for you start your week, I must say…courtesy of Who Is Rue Defense.
