Gus Baldwin and the Sketch Drop Slacker’s Prom

While the Winter weather tends to put me into my feels, there’s still a thirst for the energy that Gus Baldwin & the Sketch bring to my speakers. While they push forth in this new single, their typical tenacity is offset a little bit by the vocal delivery; Baldwin’s voice is a little calmed and hazy, setting up these perfect “oohs” that deliver a teaser hook. This is all perfect, as the energy pours through the speakers, punishing the cones as the drums thunder and riffs do their best to shred everything in their path. The Sketch will officially be out on January 25th of next year!

Psylhouette Share Everything is Fine

Still circling back to last week where I’m encountering some hidden gems those of us in the States missed out upon, so this Psylhouette is one of those jams I really wanted to get under your skin. The Brighton due have this propulsive futurist brand of pop, working on heavy synths and these sort of crystalized sugared vocals. The tune below locks you in this hedonistic trance, urging you to try and catch the strobing lights as they dance upon the tile floors at your favorite club. This is definitely one of the more upbeat numbers on their new album, Psylhouette III, so don’t go on about town looking for more of the same!

The Sprouts Share Sometimes Single

I was pretty high upon Eat Your Greens, the debut LP from Aussie outfit The Sprouts (2023), so hearing they’ve got a new release on the way is welcome news. According to the release, the six songs on the forthcoming EP were recorded at home, and while they’ve got that inclination to wear the private charms, there’s still something beyond special in this single. While perhaps I’m tethered to the video, it’s as if the song’s a lightly penned vacation soundtrack, perhaps crafted by a young Lou Reed and friends. Guitars are soft and wistful, and the underlying charm of the vocals just feels like a crisp cool wafting across your life. Keep your eyes out for the new EP, slated to drop in January.

Marble Raft Share New Single

It’s that time of year when you’re want to sit by the fire, warming your soul; I can’t think of a better way to get that season underway than by jamming some sparkling indiepop from Swedish outfit Marble Raft. A driving nighttime groove sets up the thematic concept of a magical evening out, letting life carry you wherever the proverbial wind blows. Musically, they incorporate string samples and washes of synths to accompany the dueling vocals, all of it building this wall of melody that matches a magical night. Snuggle up and enjoy.

Geoffrey O’Connor Shares Let’s Make Love Feel Good Again

While I’m still perplexed by the ever-present penguin in the new series of videos from Geoffrey O’Connor, I’m totally thrilled by his pop penmanship, as he’s written another swooning pop track I adore. Casually shimmying into the verses, he works the track like a singer controlling his audience; you can almost feel him moving across the stage as he locks into that connection. But, the big winner is the chorus, as longtime ATH hero Emma Russack lends her voice, effortlessly lifting the melody that rains upon the listener with each falling note. Another gem from the forthcoming I Love What We Do, out on February 14th via Dinosaur City.

Don’t Worry Share Ever So Clear

As they celebrate ten years together (Congrats!), Essek outfit Don’t Worry went back into the studio to reflect on the mark, and came out with this power ballad, a reflection on seeing your whole self, “ugly bits and all.” I can’t help but to fall for the vocals here, landing somewhere between Americana and British pop, albeit with a bit of punk flare. Still, the song works through the melody, filling in the space behind with cascading guitar riffs and joyous backing vocal notes. It’s all about pulling the emotion out of every note, which is where the group have excelled over past years, so crank it up! Courtesy of Specialist Subject.

Prism Shores Share Tourniquet

As if the first single from the new Prism Shores wasn’t a big enough statement, they offer their new jam, perhaps topping the joy of the first one. This go round, things are a little more patient, looking more inward, almost akin to the earliest of Teenage Fanclub moments, though there’s something in the guitar style that does feel very fresh. Each vocal go round carries this softness, but in a manner that sounds more introspective, tying it the current indie scene. You even get a little digression just after the 1.5 minute mark, leading into a beautiful closing moment. Out from Underneath is going to be something quite special, so look for it the day after my birthday, January 17th, courtesy of Meritorio Records.

Disarme Share Change Single

Our friends over at Geographie Records have a pretty good track record when it comes to what’s hip over in France, and they’ve sent us the debut single from Disarme, with this shadowy video to immerse you into the confines of what’s coming our way. There was something about the guitar sound and the hushed vocal work that reminded me of an early Sharon van Etten, though you’ll hear a subtle vocal change about midway through the tune, encouraging you to take any meaningless comparison with a grain of salt. With that little plot twist comes a lighter guitar, turning a faint little note into charm, to completely slow it down as the music moves to a softened close.

Campus Christy Share Little Wings

The musical collaboration between Peanut Butter Wolf and Brian Ellis is shaping up quite nicely, and “Little Wings” is just another careful sample from the forthcoming LP that’s got me in a state of awe. A galactic wash works just behind the strum, with a light hum adding to listener’s of the faintest brushstrokes, though on this cold Austin morning, I’m certainly drawn towards the gentle vocals. They offer this fragility, this sort of happy solitude that accompanies the light blowing of the winds outside, so it feels like the perfect track today. The self-titled Campus Christy LP will be out on December 6th via Stones Throw.

The Rishis Return with Coloring

While they’ve been hammering around in the Athens scene for some time, the Rishis only released their delightful debut back in 2022, so, that seems to have spurned the wheels of creativity now that the group have announced their follow-up LP. They’ve offered us up an enchanting first single, a tune that falls somewhere between the pop charms of Beulah, though wearing hints of the Athens scene. You’ll find textures galore, be that layered guitars, piano notes or blasts of horns; it’s all in there to give a light-hearted nature to the psychedelia, encouraging you to dive don your headphones and blast this loudly as you walk amidst the Fall leaves. You’re not going to find a happier place than right here, thus encouraging you to keep your eyes focused on the their new self-titledLP out next February via Cloud Recordings.
