Unlettered Release Leave Behind Single

Just a few weeks ago we dropped a single from Unlettered‘s forthcoming Five Mile Point, and they return with another bit of swirling indie rock. Instantly the guitars feel like they’re descending, sort of guiding you down some cavernous stairway; the vocals play right into that sensation, holding a slight echo in the mix that maximizes the tension of the track. Right around the 1:40 mark, the bass plays into the argument, gurgling beneath the surface and bringing in a different textural tone from the vocals that acts as the last breath as the song drives itself to the close. They release Five Mile Point on November 22nd.

Mauger Share Easy Now Video

I’m a sucker for heart-warming pop music, and even more so when it’s crafted by a father-daughter duo. Belgian act Mauger has been around for some time, but only recently moved into more of a solo project, thus leading Mauger to hole up at home with a guitar and electronics to build his next record. On this spritely tune, he’s joined by his daughter, which definitely raises the sugary nature; it’s carries such a lightness that you can almost catch a glimmer of promise on the horizon…which I know a ton of us are needing at the moment. There’s the promise of a new LP in the Spring, so keep your ears ready!

Autocamper Share Summertime Single

What great news today, as two of our favorite labels are uniting for a joint release; Slumberland Records and Safe Suburban Home are coming together to release a fresh cassingle from Autocamper this Friday! You can hear the delightful “Summertime” track below, offering up a keyboard-laden bit of wayward pop. You’ll find the snappiness of the drums keeping the pace, pushing the song consistently forward; the vocals have to keep up, but they don’t, choosing to kind of focus on the turn of words and the backing notes to kind of build this swirling bit of melodic madness. Those running keyboard notes and quick drum hits deifnitely build in an infectiousness you won’t escape. The full cassingle is out Friday!

Opinion Share Mains Single

As people are turning towards end of year lists, I’m over here trying to crank out what’s coming next, and one of the things I’m enjoying is an early listen to Opinion‘s new work. Last week they dropped this rad single with a crunchy and catchy guitar sound; it wormed its way inside my ear and I was unable to pull away from the shining march. It’s made more special knowing that the bands is essentially a one man project, so the way the layers and textures continue to be placed atop one another all stems from the joyous creativity of Hugo Carmouze; Troisieme Opinion comes out on December 6th via Flippin Freaks/Howlin Banana and more.

Skinner Shares Calling in Sick

Irish outfit Skinner offered up the perfect single for a Monday, especially if you’re like me and just got home late last night from a traveling adventure. While the tension and vocal delivery will feel hyper-familiar to those of you following modern post-punk trends, this song’s momentum picks up on the tension and delivers in the latter half. Indifferent vocal deliveries hop on the back of the rhythm, riding it up and down; you can feel that drive, that anger building, but you’re never quite sure you’re going to get what you deserve. Just before the 2 minute mark, the guitars begin to shriek a bit more, the vocals take on a bit of a growl, and then it explodes. It’s the perfect Monday tune, so don’t be afraid to call in sick and just crank this one up.

Lone Striker Share Dunno Single

All our favorite labels of love have their hands in this Lone Striker album coming your way, and this first single should establish the group as one of your favorites too. It should come as no surprise that we’ve also covered the project in various ways, as the lone striker himself, Tom Brown, is also part of great acts like Rural France and Teenage Tom Petties. So, here we are, with a debut single, seeing Brown relishing his role as a pop extraordinaire is immediately evident; the burst of horns in the arrangement set up his voice to kind of crest and cool in the middle of the mix. All of this chilled pop works around a lightly strummed jangle, sitting right alongside the percussive element, tapping toes and bobbing heads in the best way. For now, we can thank Repeating Cloud/Safe Suburban Home/Hidden Bay for getting this tune our way…the debut album is out next year!

Decant Release Rest

Went a little aggressive this morning, just trying to gather my energy here, but let’s settle with this new single from Decant. It’s a gentle number, sort of like a palate cleanser before you move into your morning routine. It opens with a bright vocal performance, sort of billowing across the front of the mix, pleasantly washing across. Layered backing vocals begin to add texture and depth to the tune, then are met by strings as the track moves into its second movement. The vocals are a little less angelic in the latter half, though still powerfully moving, especially when aided by the bending string notes that add a solemness to the song.

For those of us in need of a bit of comfort, Stephen McAll is a nice place to call home, particularly with a fresh new single from his outfit Constant Follower. Listening to the soft strum matching up with McAll’s voice as it sort of floats on the wind is a great place to settle into the day, even as the lyrics confront a dark period of Stephen’s past…the video does a great job of visually detailing the isolation too, furthering the intersection of the band’s music and art. Dropkick Announce Primary Colours

It’s difficult to write about new music today, but as always, I’m just going dive into my feelings and really great tunes, like this new single from Dropkick. The band have just announced their return to Bobo Integral for a new record, Primary Colours, and a new single has come across the pond, to at least let us indulge in the warmth of their sound; they offer breezy vocals that work around the softened jangle of the guitars, wafting through your speakers with a calm that soothes at it hits your ears. Look for Primary Colours to drop on February 7th.

Cistern Share Crisis Single

I’ve only recently been turned on to Cistern, though I’ve ventured through some of the other projects associated with the group, like NOV3L and Crack Cloud. This tune’s got a bit of post-punk attitude, though it’s presented in one of the most refreshing styles I’ve heard of late; there’s this incredible rise and fall on the notes, matched up with the stabbing riffs, though it all seems to tumble down a hill right into the next climb. While you keep expecting them to take off and drive the tune into a speedy rendition like their peers, they completely hold back, building the anxiety as they settle into their closing statement. One of the coolest tunes I’ve heard of late; they release New Standard via Meat Machine Records on November 22nd.
