Sometimes, the best rock n’ roll pushes back, forces you to adjust, then rewards you for taking risks, and that sums up the approach from Force Model on their latest single. They open the tune with these discordant bits of post-hardcore, not too far a cry from where many a Texas act traveled in the 90s. But, a stuttered drum sets up a plot twist, turning the track towards a melodic soar; the chords circulate before they get yanked back into a propulsive beat that encourages toe-tapping whilst still on the edge of aggressiveness. While they may have flirted with an abrasive brand of 90s rock, they quickly settle into this memorable bit of guitar pop charms that has me focused on what they’ll do next!

Nothing Natural Drop Cherry Single

You’ve got to wake up right now. Bang your head and get into the day! What better way than by cranking this alt-rock jam from Nothing Natural. This certainly feels like the group have adopted a post-grunge style this go round, hitting at those crunchy riffs, though I appreciate their ability to keep the tunes tight enough to a melodic center that you can still find a bit of pop to indulge. Then the chorus, leading into the following fold both offer up a softness that reveals the group’s penchant for sweetening your heavy rock n’ roll stylings. They release Cold Star on October 18th via Cherub Dream Records.

Greg Mendez Signs to Dead Oceans

Last year was a huge year for Greg Mendez, as the singer finally seemed to received the accolades that have been circulating about his name for years. And, what better way to follow that up than by a signing with Dead Oceans, as he’s just announced today. While the song itself is fairly simple, mostly working with a keyboard and Greg’s vocals, there’s something about a careful listen that really unfolds in this magical way. You can hear the tape rolling, detailing this innocence that seems to come with Mendez’s craft, letting you know and think that you’re the only one he’s singing to, in the most special way. First Time/Alone EP is out on October 18th.

Cosmopaark Share Olive Tree

French outfit Cosmopaark are in the midst of a solid run of tunes, with a great record last year and now a new EP on the horizon. We get another peek under the lid with their latest tune, which is a perfect blend of the light and dark that’s been captivating audiences of late. They certainly play up the softness, particularly in that very first verse, running the song over a light strum and what sounds like a sampled beat. But, they definitely dive right into the quietloud approach, blasting the warbling walls of distorted guitars right out into the world; it’s the perfect way to dive into what we can expect from the Backyard EP, out on October 18th via Howlin Banana Recordsand Stellar Frequencies.

Abandoned Buildings Release Rabbit Holes

Having dabbled in the realms of dream pop for some time, Abandoned Buildings, for my two cents, seem to be taking on an almost classic brand of rock n’ roll; they’re bridging their dreamy realm with bits and pieces of a sound that feels like Jeff Buckley. It’s difficult to describe, but there’s roll to the track that certainly reminds me of the elegance of “Grace” by the aforementioned Buckley. Maybe I’m way off, but it brought me deep within the song, where they then turned to a lighter ambiance, floating the tune into this otherworldly realm that still feels like its circling my brain. They have a new album titled Eroding Light, and we’ll have more info as we get it!

Snailosaur Shares Nature & Kaleidoscopic Mind

Brooklyn outfit Snailosaur keep forging ahead, brandishing their love for heralded indie rock sounds, filtered through their distinctive vocal work and phenomenal drum section. When listening, you get hints of Berman or Mascis or Callahan, though done up with a bit of an amphetamine rush, setting up the two new tunes to rip through your speakers with a wall of noise. While they offer up the Dinosaur Jr-esque “Nature”, they turn it into a more pensive piece on “Kaleidoscopic Mind,” settling into a Western ballad that carefully frays the edge between Americana and indie rock. Both tunes rip, so enjoy them both below!

If you’re seeking out perfect pop vibes on this Friday morning, might we direct you towards Germany’s Roller Derby. The band are frequent visitors on our site, and their latest single lives up to our continuous support, dangling another superb chorus that keeps you circling back. They’ve always had this style that feels like it could rush off into pure jangle pop territory, but somehow, they manage to pull it back just enough to set up that huge chorus that absolutely stuns every time it comes into play. Really hope the increased output of late means there’s something as special as this track on the horizon.

While a great deal of Jim Nothing‘s remarkable catalog has felt more introspective, almost like private listening parties for fans of ornate guitar pop. That said, this new single is just a blaster; it sounds huge and anthemic from the get-go, so be sure you crank this one all the way to 11. The guitar set up is huge, almost entering in like some late 70s arena rock, though the band manage to stay close to home with the vocal delivery, pulling strings that send the melody soaring in this wistful manner that circles back to the song’s reflection on past and present memories that make you smile. The new Grey Eyes Grey Lynn LP is out on Meritorio Records on October 18th.

Wussy Announce Cincinnatti Ohio

If you were near the Internet yesterday, I hope you heard that Wussy are back, after a six year gap and the passing of guitarist John Erhardt. His role in that band built in a texture that made the group almost a rare gem in the scene, but perhaps that’s where the band picks up on their latest single, reflecting on the way John and others have impacted us, even when they’re not on the other end of the telephone. Musically, there’s a rollicking rock nature here, something that has this natural drive and punch to it, albeit with a quieted ambient wall behind, allowing the emotion to crest amidst heavy textural builds. Really looking forward to hearing how far they push themselves; Cincinnati Ohio is out November 15th via Shake It Records.
