New Pop from Veps

There’s been a fair amount of buzz, at least in our ears, from Norway’s Veps, who’ve just released the follow-up single to their summer banger “My Champagne Socialist.” You get teased into this track by this little bit of playful keys, while the group begins to subtly build their sound with distorted guitars texturing the underbelly. When they get to the chorus, there’s this little playful moment as they expand the syllables on “digeridoo-do-do,” giving a lighthearted nature to the song…and of course, I’m a sucker for a little hook like that. Their new ditty comes to you courtesy of the kind people over at PNKSLM.

Another Great Jouska Tune

Nowegian artist Jouska has been picking up a lot of steam heading towards the release of How Did I Wind Up Here, and another track never hurts to add to the anticipation. The driving pulse of the song is undoubtedly that guitar, hitting heavy notes that are reminiscent of some of that mid90s alternative; I think there’s even bits of Garbage in the way the vocals come in and out of focus (also kind of a trip-hop nod too). You’ll find yourself in a bit of a daze as sampled elements seemingly sweep in and out, kind of like little automated notes thickening the production; it’s a really solid move, allowing the vocals to kind of float in the vastness of the song. The new LP is out now if you’re ready to enjoy!

New Music from The Twirlies

Those of you with a gentle leaning towards pop are going to fall in love with this single from the Twirlies. It’s a light traipse through the woods, sort of a softened gallop or a casual sail on a breezy afternoon, working with these subtle drum strokes that carefully move us forward. That said, it was the intertwining vocals that caught my ear first, wrapping around one another in this gentle fashion that makes you feel as if nothing else in the world is going on aside from these two voices cohabitating. Their a fairly new Norwegian outfit, so keep an eye out for more, as this is only their second ditty!

Another Single from Jouska

Feels like perhaps we’re best suited to begin our day reveling in the joys of the Norwegian craft, so we return to Jouska, who just put out another single from How Did I Wind Up Here. I’ve really enjoyed listening to the contrast of the sound’s here; the strum feels as if its just traipsing along, lightly present but eager to just hide. With the vocals, there’s a bit more pop to contrast with the feel, which works leading up to a brief little burst and bubble of emphasis, only to retreat back within itself. A feathered pop ballad filled with a majestic quality that you’ll surely appreciate; look for the new LP on October 17th.

Veps Share New Music

Wanted to jump into Friday with a little bit of a light spirit, so this track from Norwegian outfit Veps seems like it built for opening up our Friday jam session. This single is a shout out to being totally and madly in love, so much so that you’re willing to throw caution to the wind. Musically, the spirit abides by that, sort of embracing a kind of post garage rock sound, embedded with deep roots in pop structures. Sort of akin to what the Beths have been doing on their recent work, holding onto the joy of the moment…all of it tethered to the thematic statement. This tune comes with news that they’ve signed on to work with PNKSLM, so this is their first single with the label!

I Was a King Announce Until the End

If you’ve been following the storied career of Norway’s I Was a King, then you’re likely going to take a close listen to their new single, with the group spending more time on the melodic core rather than some of their power-pop tendencies. That said, if you’ve listened to the group’s work, they’ve always hung on the softer side of the genre, and they dive into that vibe here in a way that has them sounding like they’re dusting off some old tendencies and pushing forward. I love Anne Lise’s light backing notes layered behind Frode’s lead, providing the textured love the group is known for creating. They completed the work on Until the End with Bill Ryder-Jones, so we should expect something meaningful coming our way on October 17th.

Nansy Return with In Your Eyes

Now that we’ve gotten some rock n’ roll out into the world, let’s focus on the softer side of my heart, like this tune from the recent reunited Nansy. The Oslo band was an indiepop go-to in the early 00s, but walked away until this last week; their new single embraces the early charms whilst bringing it right up to speed with the modern sound. I’ll be honest, however, as the vocals are what swept me away, not that the music doesn’t have its own magic, but the way it switches from the calmed delivery into this more pronounced pop spin got right under my skin. Hats off to the arrangement as well, as there’s a great bit of depth that will surely reward your repeat listens.

Pleased to Meet You: Twirlies

There’s a lot of great pop music coming out of Norway this year (High Water Marks!), but I hadn’t heard of Twirlies before, but am glad to have stumbled upon their sound this Friday morning. While they call Norway home, you can certainly seem them fitting into a number of various pop scenes around the indie sphere, mostly Glasgow and Athens (Georgia). They employ this marvelous sense of melody, almost pulling at nostalgia as they try to bring it into the present with overlapping vocal harmonies and clarity in production. A new group dropping some bright pop music? Thanks Cafe Superstar for sending this our way!

Tape Trash Drop New Single – We Will Collide

There is a deserved amount of buzz and expectations blowing overseas from Norwegian outfit Tape Trash, who return today with a brand new track from their forthcoming LP. Listening through this latest tune, you can hear why folks are excited; they sound like some of the early Pains of Being Pure at Heart records, which also has links to fuzz pop and dreamy hits from the 80s/90s. But, on their end, they seem to fully embrace the pop side of things, letting that sort of burst through the noisier underbelly of the single, erupting in the chorus with this maximized melody that sprinkles you with cool. So you get noise and cooled warmth, all of which we expect to find on their debut LP for Tiny Engines, slated for a Fall release.

King Husky Shares Heads Above Water

I cannot quite explain, but there is something in the voice of Vidar Landa that feels supremely familiar. I’m not sure if that is because I have been spending a lot of time with the forthcoming King Husky album, or if there’s something in the tones…regardless, it makes the listening to his latest single another joyous pop listening experience. When his voice comes into the picture, it’s feathered tone just sucks you into the song’s narrative, almost a shared whisper between Vidar and the listener. A steady roll of drums and supporting arrangement allow for a building of texture, lifting the song and Landa’s voice higher in the mix. The self-titled LP will be out on May 9th, next week!!
