Mall Girl Share New Jam

When we think about post-emo jams, Oslo is not typically the first place to come to mind. All that may change though with the sounds of Norwegian outfit Mall Girl, and tunes like this new one called “Emo Shred.” Shocker, the title perfectly conveys what you’re going to get from the song with its bright, intricate guitar parts and dramatic, emotional drops. It bangs, for real.

Mall Girl has three more songs currently streaming on bandcamp from their upcoming new album entitled Pure Love. That one is out on January 26th.

The Uptights Share Tor Aukrust

You’re just waking up to today; you’re a bit weary as you rub those little flecks of sleep from the corners of your eyes. On the stereo, you hear this beautifully solemn song from the Uptights, something that makes you aligns with your exact state. The song rolls, tosses and turns slowly, like you, arising from your slumber. There’s this cavernous depth, like the fog cruising through your mind before you’ve showered and had that first cup of coffee. Something about this just feels like a musical awakening, and we’re all the better knowing that someone’s put music to our every day routine. The Norwegian outfit will release I Was Dreaming on October 27th.

Fuckleberry Hinn Share Nobody Single

Any band in this day and age willing to take on the heralded double LP deserve a medal, thus why I’m here to turn your attention towards Norway’s Fuckleberry Hinn. For me, this song works in multiple stages, almost taking on this dreaming pastoral vibe, with just a hint of cymbal work adding the slightest hint of percussion. Then there’s a slight plot twist underneath, adding in more texture while still trying to balance a bit of the melody. Some emphatic moments add some kick to the tune, illustrating the band’s willingness to build movement within the track; I just love the way it seems to kick on and stomp in here. If you’re enjoying this number, be sure to put Neither/Nor on your radar; it hits on September 1st.

Norway’s Yndling Share Fresh Single

Wanted to slide us into our Friday coverage with this really dense bit of pop magic from Norway’s Yndling. After about 15 seconds of ambient noise, the track creeps right into these darkened pop moments, with cascading guitar lines raining from your speakers while the bass bubbles buoyantly beneath. Vocals from songwriter Silje add this ethereal quality to the track, carrying your mind into freeing spaces, letting you just drift. What I loved about this tune was the way the rhythm section kept pushing the pace; it keeps the energy pulsing where other like-minded acts might let the dreaminess cover your ears. Hopefully we’ll get to hear more soon!

Meet the SXSW Band: Orions Belte

Now that we are starting to churn out some of these SXSW previews, you can sort of start to feel the excitement growing for the festival. Say what you will about the current state of things either in Austin or with the festival itself, we will still support these artists and have a good time all week. While you’re out there looking for some new bands to follow or check out, might I suggest the Norwegian trio known as Orions Belte. You can scope their interview along with music and current SXSW dates after the jump.

Real Ones Share The Feeling

Norwegian outfit Real Ones dropped their latest LP, Love Your Mother, last week, and as I’m going back on my listening over the last few days, I was reminded about how much I enjoyed the record, particularly this single. There’s something communal in the band’s approach, reminiscent of the classic rock era; it also has a tendency to bring in these huge swinging harmonies that match that vibe too. It’s kind of like the group have been hanging out studying an equal combination of the Dead’s early work and the whole of Wilco’s catalog; it’s the perfect feel good listen, so grab onto “the Feeling.”

Magnus Frodahl Sand Shares Bioluminescence

If you follow some of the Scandinavian metal, you’d like have heard from Magnus Frodahl Sand‘s Myrvandrer project, but he’s turning a little more pensive with his new solo work, as you’ll hear below. From the opening seconds, I was in love with the rhythm guitar sound; it’s light and faintly hints at jangling pop notes, letting Magnus come in with his ghostly cool vocal work. His voice seems to ride just atop the guitars for the most part, careful not to overextend itself volume-wise, so everything operates in perfect balance. And with this approach, it allows for the track to take on noisier elements that tie the tune to that mixture of noise and shoegaze. Enjoy.

Veps Announce Debut LP with Mooney Tunes

There’s a definite need of good vibes and energy this morning on my end, so I’m just pumping up this new track from Norway’s Veps. There’s this clever hipness you get from Helena’s vocal style; she sounds like she’s a soul singer trading in her voice to at the crossroads to join a rock n’ roll band. The bass line gives the song its central groove, and the rest of the band follows suit behind the vocals, driving you quickly down a hook-laden twist and turn, ending with a blast of joy you can’t escape. It seems like the quartet is having a whole lot of fun, and in the end, that’s infectious; the band release their debut Oslo Park via Kanine Records on November 18th.

I Was a King Release Lo Pressure

Some bands don’t age well, but for my money, I Was a King seem to be aging like the finest of wines; I feel like everything from the forthcoming Follow Me Home has been nothing short of endearing, with every note hitting just the right chord. This brand new single doesn’t waste any time, hitting things right away with this vocal that seems hurried to maximize the melodic nature. Once things settle in, it’s a steady trip around handclaps and the perfect strum, with the vocal urgency always intact. I feel like this song could be the one I play again and again for the duration of this year. Follow Me Home is out on October 7th, and it looks like we’ll all have to get the physical copy on Discogs…as both versions are sold out! Hear why below!

Indie Rock Stunner From Bo Milli

As we sort of wrap up our week and ease into the dreaded last weekend of summer, let me suggest you take this new song from Norwegian artist Bo Milli with you. The song, “How it Is”, is a straight up indie pop stunner. Though many of us have already moved on from our summer time playlists, this track could easily be in contention for one of the tops of the season. I love the quiet reservation of pop melding perfectly with the slightly distorted guitar arrangements. Stay tuned for more from Bo Milli later this fall.
