We continue our year-end list from people we love, one of whom is Joe of Wildhoney; he also shared that there’s a new band named Dummy in the works for 2020. Here’s a few words and a list from Joe! Joe: 2019 was a weird year for me and connecting new music, the things I really loved were mostly reissues, things from the past; newer releases were just not inspiring, and it was the first time I can remember this happening and it was, tbh unnerving. Luckily, towards end of the year some things start clicking and I felt inspired and excited again! So here’s some things I really connected with, 5 new releases, 5 reissues/comps and 5 eps/7″.

Mondo Video from Operator Music Band

Operator Music Band are working towards the release of their album Duo Duo in September, so they’ve shared another track to catch your ear. It’s interesting to me that the band get the Stereolab comparison, just because there’s a lady and some warped synth pulses; I feel like it’s more organic, almost like !!!. On this number, it’s all about that rhythmic groove, from the cymbal work to the bass lines to the synth stabs; I think the vocals even have this purposeful pulse to them. But, ultimately, that comparison for me is all about the joy, and when you get to the song’s end, you’ll feel that exuberance through your speakers. The new LP drops on September 20th via Broken Circles.

Operator Music Band Announce Duo Duo

I was real high on Operator Music Band‘s Coordination EP back in 2017, and it looks like they aim to continue their rhythmic intoxication with their new album, Duo Duo. It’s like spaced-age art pop, with the vocal interplay between Dara Hirsch and Jared Hiller crating the gravitational pull for listeners; it’s like they’re offering up some sort of call and response poem. In other bits, it’s the little nuanced touches that really bring the song some depth; you’ll hear these little discordant guitar stabs just around the 1 minute mark, later unfolding to a more atmospheric wash atop the song’s distant horizon. It’s quite a marvel, leading me to believe that Duo Duo will be something special; it drops September 20th via Broken Circles.

Digging on Operator Music Band

Not sure I’m wholeheartedly on board with the name here, but I’m definitely hitching on to the Operator Music Band hype train. Their latest single has this almost jittery start before settling into a nice little groove with doses of electronic flourishes jumping up and about. The vocals stay home, spoken more than sung…though there’s a touch more of that as the song carries. Bouncing a bit at the end, the song encapsulates the concept of art pop. They’ll be dropping their new Coordination EP on December 1st via New Professor Music.
