Lachlan Denton Shares This Christmas

When Lachlan Denton lost his brother Zac (of Ocean Party fame) unexpectedly last year, he was overtaken by emotion; he did what he and his brother had been doing for a long long time…he penned some tunes to try and write his emotions out into the world. The first tune we’ve heard from the LP is “This Christmas,” which has me pretty damn near close to tears. In the lyrics you’ve got a brother promising to keep his brother’s memory alive, though that promise comes with the knowledge that those memories will also bring sadness. Musically, there’s this wonderfully gleaming guitar line; it twinkles and sparkles in the front of the mix, much like Zac when he was fronting OP. A Brother will be out on July 19th via Osborne Again/Spunk/Bobo Integral.

Casual Pop from No Local

I spent a lot of time listening to the latest single from No Local, a band comprised of Snowy and Zac D (who passed away before his time) from the Ocean Party. Part of that was nostalgia, but a great deal had to do with just how great this simple song is; I think it’s a testament to Denton and Snowy’s writing partnership. It’s a song mostly worked around keys and soft drum work, while the vocals sit back casually, repeating the the line “I’ve got nothing more to give” as the song draws to a close. The End Again will be out at the end of April courtesy of Osborne Again and Emotional Response.

Cool Sounds Share Cassandra

Soon to be coming across the oceans is Cactus Country, the brand new album of hits from Australia’s Cool Sounds. Today we get to share with you what it’s all about, with this energetic, popping track. It takes on a bit of a warbling folk number to kick things off, soon rolling into a full on bounce by way of the rhythm section. Twanging guitar and keys jump in and out of the tune all along, illustrating the group’s penchant to just craft, dare I say, cool sounds. Love the natural sun shining from the chorus, and I bet you will too. If that’s the case, grab Cactus Countryfrom Osborne Again on October 26th.

I’ve been into the work of Cool Sounds for just a bit, and with the announcement of a new LP on the horizon, lets get back on it. The opening minute and a half is a little more subtle than before, perhaps drawing inspiration from a more classic rock guitar sound, maybe even a fine slice of country. Still, the Melbourne outfit are a pop outfit, so they’re not turning their back on that sound, letting the tension build up until a funky little jam delivers pop sensibility to keep you all in check. Cactus Country will be out on October 26th via Osborne Again.
