We’re just a few weeks out from our annual SOTO vs AustinTownHall show at Hotel Vegas (more info HERE), and one of the group’s taking the stage on our behalf is Paper Sister. The group have a penchant for heavy dream pop sounds, but on their newest single, they pull back the weighted moments to really highlight the melody; it’s one of my favorite things about the track, as the pop sensibility really rises to the surface, highlighting the band’s charms. You’ll still get to hear pretty of angular riffs twisting and knifing their way through the entirety of the jam, with a nice little growl gurgling beneath. Really expert production and a tune you’ll surely love.

When you press play on the below Paper Sister tune, you’re instantly met with a growling guitar and thundering beat; it sets up a darkened realm where the group allow for their mixture of 90s alternative rock and shoegaze swirl into one powerful sound. I love the way one of the guitars is stabbing through the madness, matching the rhythmic punch, all of it while howling vocals soar atop. Pulling back briefly in spots lets the noise bubble up to the surface, only to tug it back into their penchant for pop sensibility. It’s a well defined mixture of your favorite sounds, and one that continues to shine the spotlight on this Austin outfit.

Austin outfit Paper Sister have churned out several hits this year, and it looks like they’re ending 2025 with another banger. This tune begs for patience, however, as the tune broods, twists and turns for two minutes, allowing guitars to snake through the landscape as the bass growls. In between, the riffs build some solid tension, all of it finally hitting the musical apex just as you cross the two minute mark. It’s there when the group unleash their magic, letting the guitars growl as you get some vocal yips to keep the tune just on the right side of playfulness. Expect a debut EP from the group in 2026.

Sure, we’ve had our eyes on SXSW as of late, but there were so many great songs coming out, we had to hustle to be sure we got to as many as possible. We covered new stuff from the Gotobeds and Reds, Pinks and Purples, plus we got to highlight longtime favorites like The High Water Marks and Exploding Flowers, just to name a few. We had some quick SXSW interviews with Cloth, Snacktime, Last Waltzon, Two Man Giant Squid and Saint Blonde, so all get a little feature loved today, along with the rest of the weekly bangers. There’s a lot going on in the Austin scene at the moment, with our own SXSW show on the horizon, but last week, this Paper Sister track caught my attention. The group swear an allegiance to the left-of-the-dial anthemic pop of the late 90s, which fits my listening habits of late, as I’ve oddly been on a Cranberries kick (ain’t no shame!). This track puts the pop focus in the verses, walking you into the tracks with a softness that seduces the listener at first. They don’t hang out there forever, however, as they’ve also got a penchant for noisy indie rock, which you can hear filling the backdrop of this tune when the chorus kicks in. Just another reason to keep an eye on the ATX scene this year!
