Well folks, I’m back in the game full time, teaching, coaching and all that jazz. So, I didn’t hit my previous mark of nearly 30 songs in a week. But, we still had some really great stuff on the site, so it’s organized below in its usual playlist fashion. One of the best group’s in the game, Feeling Figures, bounced out with a rad new single, plus our old pal Caroline Says also announced her first LP in some years. We gave a shout out to some great records by Fake Fruit, Chime School, Hits and more (and yes, I missed Wut and the Softies). Oh, and new jams from UV-TV and High Water Marks closed out the week, so I guess you could say, it was a pretty good time!

Visiting this site over the last few year means you’ve likely caught wind of Phantom Handshakes, a New York outfit we’ve been praising since their earliest days. With that, we’ve watched them move from a quieted dream pop act to something that adheres to the genre’s style while still blossoming into something that feels bolder and much brighter. Their latest record, Sirens at Golden Hour, is a huge leap sonically, as all the little corners and bits that typically get swept under the rug are allowed to exist here, creating an entire record of pop tunes that feel heavier, though holding onto the pop sensibility. The darkness of “Apart” is still one of my favorite tunes, but you’ll notice that the entirety of the album just feels larger than life, displaying just how far the band have come in their brief existence. Through the first two singles from the new Phantom Handshakes LP, you could see the progress/growth from their earlier work. This go round, they seem to be delving into a bit darker territory in a sense, which we don’t mind one single bit, particularly as the execution of the sound around Federica’s work is on point. If you press play, you’re greeted by a growling wall of distortion, though it’s pushed into the far-off background, in favor of the sharper guitar stabs up front. But, both subside, leaving only the rhythm section and an atmospheric wind blowing across the tune, all of it creating more of an anxiety-ridden haunted house vibe, which feels like fairly new territory. All that said, there’s still a pop core, that’ll keep you coming back to grab a listen to Sirens at Golden Hour.

For some reason, this past week felt a little slow in terms of new music coming our way, and while I say that, we still cranked out over 20 tracks for you to peruse below. I was super excited for the new track from Low’s Alan Sparhawk, the first music we’ve heard from him since the passing of his Mimi; it was a beautiful piece that shows Alan off on a grand adventure. The Reds, Pinks and Purples snuck in some special new singles, so we’re grateful Glenn got those out into the world. I was stoked on new stuff from Austin’s Marry Cherry, not to mention a new Wut tune that came our way. Kicked off this playlist with my favorite tune, Teenage Tom Petties bringing in the hooks with “Night Nurse.” So, press play and see what you missed out on last week!

Avowed Phantom Handshakes fan over here, and I’ve been anxiously awaiting the whole of their new record, but for now I’ll do with another tasty tease. “Dusk Enchanted” is one of those tunes that completely captures the song’s title in its sentiment. Heavy guitar tones weave the pattern here, providing the element of darkness as it creeps into the sky; you’ll find that feeling creeping into your room too as the song begins to unfold. Federica’s voice, however, captures the whole of the fading light, sparkling as the last remnant of the sun before we settle into the night. And through it all, the melody is wholly intoxicating, and you won’t be able to pull yourself away from this beautiful number. Sirens at Golden Hour is out on August 21st.

New York’s dreamy popsters Phantom Handshakes have been quietly going about the delivery of consistently good pop music over the last four years; they’re finally back with an official new LP, Sirens at Golden Hour, with a stunner to set your expectations. As per usual, they’ve got this wash of atmosphere coating the methodical bounce from the rhythm section; they’re capable of making even the catchiest moments seem like a hazy mirage on the horizon. You’re going to love Federica’s performance too, as she picks up on the energy of the song, bouncing her voice into the mixture from time to time. Sirens at Golden Hour will drop on August 21st, and the feels are trending up for this release.

The Radio Field Share New Single (ft. Phantom Handshakes)

German outfit The Radio Field are an up-and-coming band on the whole dream meets jangle realm, and I for one and totally on board. They’ve dropped an EP, but as they ready their debut LP, they’ve enlisted Federica from ATH faves Phantom Handshakes to join them in the fun on this go round. Once the starting gun is off, the guitars twist and turn, opening their jangles into the dreamier realms of of the genre. Vocals enter, overlapping one another; you get a deep tone meeting up with angelic notes, intermingling for maximum sweetness. Churning and turning, there’s a nice emphatic close with some added punch, leaving us with the promise that Don’ts and Dos is going to be a banger; look for the release this August via Subjangle.

It’s strange. Last week, I was complaining that the tunes were drying up as its nearing the end of the year. And here we are, RayRay and I getting a solid 20 songs up, plus interviews and coverage of Levitation. Guess we crushed it, along with our friend JWagner, who gave us some solid Babe Rainbow coverage. Personally, of all the tracks I loved last week, that Heather Trost tune is just a flat out star; I need ya’ll to get behind me on this! Our Aussie friends in Deuce also dropped us a new ditty, plus we got a new Tubs announcement out there. Tune in and let us know what you’re loving.

Phantom Handshakes Drop Passport (How Far I Will Be)

Phantom Handshakes will be dropping their new latest LP in a little over a week or so; it’s shaping up to be even more special than the previous release. With this new single, the band highlight their ability to kind of maintain this melodic dreaminess, keeping the song tethered to that central piece, which in this case comes from Frederica’s voice. Where other acts might push to be overly explosive, or push the beat beyond the vocals, this duo hold it in place, allowing the listener space to let the mind wonder in and out of consciousness as they draw their ears towards the speaker. A Passport to Remain is released on November 3rd.

Lots of coverage running around last week, and with ACL in town, there was some coverage of shows and what not. We ended the week throwing up some streams of our favorite LPs that dropped too. But, ultimately, you came here for the tunes, and we had lots of them. Personally, I loved new stuff from I Was a King, Heather Trost and Field School, not to mention the little twist in expectations thrown in by the latest from Smashing Times.
