More Pop Rocking Goodness from Joy Cleaner

I’m pretty sure that Joy Cleaner is the bastard child of Ultimate Fakebook and Teenage Fanclub. Both aforementioned bands (as well as JC) brandish the same sonic tendencies, feeding listeners these huge riffs. To me, the this song’s reliance upon the vocal melody while still kicking out arena ready riffs is where I get the UF comparison; they almost share the same slight vocal hiccup…and that’s one of my favorite reasons to love both bands. Guess I’m just the world’s biggest sucker for catchy pop rock n’ roll, which is probably why I’ve been loving every second of You’re So Jaded; it drops on November 1st via Jigsaw Records.

Anthemic Rocker from the Hussy

Don’t let the scuzzy guitar fuzz on this tune frighten you; the Hussy are here to bring you a bright pop rock tune that will stick inside your head. They enter the scene here with this distorted swagger; the vocals delivered coolly, building the tension towards the chorus. It’s here you get this huge release as the volume seems to jump up, only highlighting the band’s infectious hook that they’ve built into their song. Blasting with sweet melody, the band just jump right in, melt your face, then they’re gone in just over 2 minutes…so feel free to go back there and press repeat. You’ll find this tune on their new LP, Looming, out this Fall via Dirtnap Records. They’ve got an Austin show at the end of September with Xetas.

Ram Vela & the Easy Targets Drop New Tunes

As long as we’ve run this site, there’s been a Ram Vela in our lives. He’s been buds with RayRay forever, and his old band Whitman played countless ATH shows. But, he’s been quiet for a bit, focusing on other things. But, as of late he’s been working with his new band Ram Vela & the Easy Targets; he’s been in the studio with Taylor Muse from Austin’s Quiet Company. As of today, he’s got two pop rock nuggets ready to go for you; they’re heavy on riffs and hooks, two things you can always count on Ram to give you in his songwriting. I love the breakdown in “Garage Apt,” while “If I Fail” is more anthemic, built for crowd sing-a-longs. Ram and the band will be playing at Mohawk next Friday with Quiet Company.

By now, if you’re one of the 8 people reading these pages, you know how much I’ve been looking forward to hearing the entirety of There’s No Fight We Can’t Both Win, the new LP from Mammoth Penguins. Today’s the day that it drops, giving us further insight into the band’s return to a slimmed down 3 piece (after the John Doe release). While there are some definite pop rocking numbers, my early time with the LP has me falling for “There is So Much More;” it’s a really soft tune, giving the album some diversity so it doesn’t wear on you…not to mention there’s no such thing as a bad Kupa performance. If you love your pop music, you’ll love this album, so go grab it from Fika Recordings, or stream it below!

Pop Hit from DieAlps

I love a good pop tune, and this one from DieAlps should definitely whet your whistle today. There are slight notes of Death Cab in the song’s construction, though these guys bring a touch more energy. The keyboard working hard in the distance really gives the song and extra hook as the guitars work to infuse the track with pace. It’s a great glimpse at a band just out there rocking solid pop rock tunes, and we hear that there will be much more from the band in August when they release their new full-length, Our City, via New Granada.

Pop Rocker from No Win

I ran down a crazy worm hole of pop punk yesterday thanks to a friend, and then this No Win single came my way, fitting perfectly into my day. He got some help from his friends in FIDLAR to craft a bunch of songs for Dangerbird Records Microdose Project, so don’t turn away before jamming this song. There a youthful vibe in the lyrical content, even nodding to the scribbling of notes (doesn’t everyone know the kids use Snapchat nowadays). Sometimes the bullshit just doesn’t mean much, but the good songs survive it all. Give a listen.

Brand New Tune from Fishboy

Fishboy have graced these little web pages for some time, and they recently announced the release of their latest LP, Art Guards…out on May 19th via Lauren Records. They’ve always reminded me of the perfect mix between They Might Be Giants and The Weakerthans, filling their songs with hyper-literate lyrics. Musically, they’re blasting out these infectious pop rock licks that circle back in your mind again and again, begging for you to have repeated plays throughout the day. It’s hard to understand why these guys aren’t everyone’s favorite band, but perhaps its better if we keep it as our little secret…for now.

Pop Rocker from Hellrazor

hellraiserIt’s easy to get carried away with all the modern fads and whatnot, but, for me, more often than not it’s the tried and true brands of rock n’ roll that always appeal to me. This brand new track from Hellrazor had me the minute the guitars offered up their distorted pop crunch, with vocals joining in to fill in the required hooks. I kind of just want to turn the track up and walk around the halls here at work…maybe that’ll work for you. If not, you’ll have to wait until November 4th to get your hands on the band’s new record, Satan Smile, courtesy of New Professor Music.

ATX Spotlight: New Music from The Gents

thegentsAfter announcing earlier in the year that The Gents wouldbe releasing a collection of songs broken up into four EPs, we get our first glimpse at Part II of the IV series. The band does an excellent job of blending their folk influences with their natural willingness to use pop structures, leaving you with singable moments that remain in your ears (and hearts) as you press repeat over and over again. The song takes a brief detour mid-track, only to swell back in with the emphasis on “paperweight.” Sounds like they’ve done it again…so give it a little listen while we await the rest of the EP.

Stream Tetherball’s Physical Violins EP

We’ve discussed the ambitious project of Tetherball earlier in the year, discussing his goal of putting out a handful of EPs in 2016, and you can finally stream Physical Violins in it’s entirety. “Tornado Games” kicks things off with a punchy bit of pop rock, knocking you back before moving on to provide the funky rock of “Greedy Tiger.” For me, those two tracks set up the EPs standout tune, in my opinion; it’s titled “Gladiate.” There’s an off-kilter bouncing piano line, giving off a playfulness that’s matched by the pop sensibility present throughout the entirety of the EP. “War (Medic)” closes the EP out with another driving ballad, focused around the plodding chords and tinkering piano play; the chorus in this song is a sure-fire winner. It’s four songs of fun pop, all with a different approach. Grab it, then let’s all wait until that next EP comes our way.
