The Raft Collect Songs for the Jellyfish EPs
One the last few years, Phil Wilson and his pop outfit the Raft have been dropping these casual singles and EPs, all of which had artwork depicting jellyfish; now they’ve collected all the songs and reordered them to put out the collection titled The Jellyfish EPs. The song’s have been reordered a bit, which gives the album a more cohesive flow, pitting soft-bellied tunes against the more emphatic numbers. I keep getting drawn into “Orion;” it has this power pop vibe if spun through a web of indiepop influences. But, if you’re looking for an album that’s solid songwriting from start to finish, then take a few minutes to spend it with this collection; it’s available via Shore Dive Records.
This Blades of Joy gem has been bouncing around the Internet for a wee bit, but I was out having one of those baby things, so forgive me for not being on the up and up. That being said, this is one of the songs I rushed to get up upon my return. You might be able to toss the group into any number of categories, but most importantly, you’ll keep coming back to celebrate how great the music is. There’s a noticeable indifference in the guitar work, and yet the vocals have this warmth that could soothe any listener. There’s this timelessness to it, wherein it could fit into any musical decade and make an impact. If you listen to any one song today, make this the one. The band’s self-titled LP will drop on September 21st via

Up until now, I always think of songs with the title Wendy as an ode to Descendents (even though I know that’s an ode to Beach Boys in and of itself). That might change now that I’ve heard the pop amalgamation coming from

Summer time brings Summer Magic! Summer Magic brings bright hook-laden pop tunes! I love exclamation points! So this song snuck into my head and it won’t leave. There’s something nostalgic that it brings up, especially when the vocals change slightly during the chorus…feels familiar like great pop songs do. Something from the snare work to the melody definitely recalls summer time, so the name’s definitely apt. This song will feature on the new album Sharks and Other Dangers, which will be available to the masses on August 31st. Go on, be a pop fan.
