Pop Balladry from Suntrodden

I’m not afraid to cover more Suntrodden tunes, especially when he’s slightly toying with his sound, such as he does on this new ballad. While previous tracks have been filled with harmonies and careful guitar work, this song roams atop a sullen piano backbone. Then on the song’s latter half the guitar is slightly more pronounced, percussive elements are layered and then there’s the airy voice of Erik Stephansson winning in the end! Pretty sure III is going to be another release welcomed by my ears…look for it on June 30th.

Uplifting Pop Number from TRASH

I love a good pop number, especially when its sunny outside, so why not post this new jam from TRASH. The approach is pretty simple, giving listeners a natural bounce from the driving rhythm, but I really like the little nuances where the band toy with listeners. Several times in the track they hold back the melodic release, just for a second; it’s like a sugary pop tease that only draws you further into their sound. Plus, they have these distant dream pop guitar lines lurking in the distance, and you know I’m a sucker for that sound. Look for the group to release their new EP later this summer.

Stream I Did the Best I Could from Office Culture

You look around the Internet these days and the landscape looks very similar; it all feels the same. But, enter Office Culture and their album, I Did the Best I Could; it opens the door to a blend of pop music that’s as refreshing as it is nostalgic. “Molly” is a jam reminiscent of early Jens Lekman, focusing on the vocals, while letting the music fill in the space behind. Other tracks like “Fool” pull in barroom crooner vibes, though they layer backing vocals and guitar stabs to build the pop sensibility. I’m looking around, browsing my musical library, and there’s nothing quite like the listen I lay before you. This is where pop music succeeds. This is where you’ll find your happy place. The LP hits this Friday.

Upbeat Number from Rory McVicar

In the past, Rory McVicar has definitely hit upon some of the cornerstones of indiepop, but its never been more apparent than the spritely guitar he employs on his latest singer. It takes that light jangle shuffle, mixes it with his breezy melodies and makes you swoon. There’s nice little touches too, like the tinkering piano or the distant sound of birds at work. Rory’s hard at work finishing up his third album, but if you have a quick minute or two to enjoy your life, then I suggest you start right here.

Enjoy New Tune from Tempest le Mans

Sun’s out, so pop tunes are required. My favorite that I’ve come across this morning is the latest single from Cali’s Tempest le Mans. It seems to have a slight nod to guitar pop acts like Teenage Fanclub, though the distortion is stripped in favor of promoting pure melody. I guess in doing that, they walk that path into casual indiepop territory; it’s a subtle gem that can easily play anywhere in your day…never intrusive but always rewarding. The band are set to release their new Apology EP on June 28th, so keep your ears pulled back for what is to come.

Those of you longing for that void left by early Animal Collective might find something appealing in the craftwork of Vansire, though the tunes are a little bit more subtle. Just imagine that you, like all folks, have grown older, and traded it in heavy beeps for dreamier notes; you’re going to easily let these musical notes float about your office or your home today. Take the trade and you’ll find this melodic jauntlurking in every corner of your day today. It’s just a new single, but let’s hope these Minnesotans keep up the good vibes.

Fresh Pop from Seazoo

You want to meet the next great pop group? Then just listen to Seazoo, and do it today. This song opens up well enough, playfully getting into your ear with a shimmering guitar dancing in the distance. Still, you have to at least make it to the 51st second of the tune, as it’s immediately going to carry you away into a euphoric bliss; I haven’t heard a hook this good in 2017. It’s okay, you’re right to feel uplifted; you’re right to grab your neighbor and celebrate life. Play this song as much as you want, and just wait for more pop from this Welsh bunch…they’re polishing up their debut LP.

Stream Strange Durations from Edmonson

With all the nods to pop music, you very rarely find something as endearing (and creative) as Edmonson‘s Strange Durations. Through ten songs, the brothers from Gainesville build layer upon layer of extravagant harmony, experimenting with various flourishes throughout. Songs like “Turnings” see the band experimenting with balladry, with a bouncing piano that moves into a more elegant territory as the vocals reach for angelic tones. I love how the lyrical content reflects the changes in the mundane, such as on “Mobius Strip;” it’s a thematic element that allows every listener a chance to find their own phrase to latch onto in the end.

Don’t rush through your listening of this stream, as it is not an album you can fully absorb without giving attention to the finer details within its confines. There’s such care to every movement, and every note that you’ll quickly find yourself lost deep within Strange Durations. It’s out today via Elestial Sounds Records.

Friday Pop Jam from Courtship

You’re kicking off your day, so why not start with some bouncing electro pop to get those feet tapping and that spirit rising. This new jam from Courtship should do the trick, especially if you’re staring at the rising sun out your window. It reminds me a lot of early Generationals tune, filled with an infectious quality that pretty much every listener will enjoy. Feel like its always great to start off with some extra juice on a Friday, so have a good one folks!

Suntrodden Is Back with a New EP

I raved and raved about Suntrodden last year, and now we return with the latest piece from his final work in his 3-EP series, III. As usual Erik’s tossing a gentle vocal atop really carefully crafted pop styles; this is what always draws me into his songwriting. But, I really like the attention given to the recording, with various textures of guitar added atop one another to really add depth to the song…not to mention a little bit of keys hanging about too. The latest edition in the series will drop on June 30th, so you can bet you’ll hear more from us as the release date nears.
