The Telephone Numbers Share You’re Nowhere

Wouldn’t you believe it? Two great labels unite to bring a great new band from San Francisco? The Telephone Numbers just announced The Ballad of Doug via Paisley Shirt Records and Meritorio, two labels we’ve written about numerous times. Oh, and is that a Glenn Donaldson sighting in the credits? That’s like the hottest commodity in songwriting right now. But, all hyperbole aside, the light circular ring of the guitar strum and harmonizing in the vocal work is just the delightful side of pop I’d like to call home. Thomas Rubenstein’s vocals on his own do have this heavy indiepop tinge, not unlike our friends in Tres Oui, which seems fitting given both bands adoration of Prefab Sprout. Required listening? Duh! The record’s out on June 4th!

Kevin Hairs Releases Dad of the Universe

Kevin Hairs is a true artists, not only writing songs, but also creating the own album art for each release, as well as other artistic endeavors. Today, lets rejoice that there’s a new collection of Hairs tunes titled Dad of the Universe; it’s the perfect musical gift for pop fans, with the majority of the tracks just barely stretching beyond the 1 minute mark this round. It’s almost as if the songwriting process was like chewing shitty bubblegum. Get all that sweetness that you can out of each song, then move onto the next piece, and do it all over again. “Dad of the Universe” is a spectacular song, twisting these great guitar chords and light jangling around Kevin’s vocals; I love how the mix has those two elements sharing the limelight. “The Who Heard the Who” has this heavier guitar feel that I’m totally digging on too, kind of sliding down the scales in this continuous musical free fall. If you like your pop guaranteed, spend some times with Dad of the Universe.

Tape Deck Mountain Announces True Deceiver

It’s been a few years since we’ve heard anything pop up from the Tape Deck Mountain camp, but it looks like there’s a new album in store for us…along with a new line-up. As of right now, the band’s announcement of True Deceiver comes with two new tunes, both stretching beyond the 5 minute mark; this indicates that we’re in for some expansive musical journeys when the LP officially drops. On “Screen Savior” there’s this careful guitar sharply ringing in the background, but what drew me into the tune was it’s approach to offering up heavy beauty. “NOMO” feels like its letting us drift out to space, perhaps tethered to Earth by our headphones; it faintly reminds me of where the last Hum record hung out. This new record is slated for release on April 23rd.

Ski Saigon Announce Debut LP

Man, I feel like a charmed man today, getting new music from Death of Pop earlier, and now this track from Ski Saigon to boot! The band are crafting this dense post-punk, steadied by a throbbing rhythm section that holds the track up on its back. All the while, the vocals softly whisper to you from behind this wall of shimmering guitar lines that come in and out of focus; it’s strange, feeling like a confessional of sorts shared between two confidantes, swirled about in this cavernous realm of nostalgic pop nods. Ski Saigon Sees the Albatross will be out on Too Good to Be True Records on March 4th.

Freedom Fry Share Corde Sensible Single

LA duo Freedom Fry are preparing the release of their newest record, their first entirely done in French. With that chance definitely comes a shift in focus, with the band drawing on some classic pop sounds from the French scene. The craft of the beats and the bounce of the piano lines has some early Air vibes; they get a big boost from the driving beat too, which guarantees a dose of energy to spin your around. In the vocals you get that dreamy touch that never seems to grow old. I’ll keep you posted with more on the album, but for now, just enjoy a nice kick in the rear to start your day.

Brother Sports Back with Dry Eyes

Lockdowns and quarantines have really pushed Austin’s Brother Sports into high gear; they continue to release jam after jam, with their iii EP, just dropping in this past week. One of my favorite tunes is “Dry Eyes,” which kind of has this sort of low-energy Strokes feel to it, if that makes sense. In my ear, it kind of takes that deep throated vocal charm, working it over some sharp notes that have this dreamier swagger in a slow-burn sort of way. Just seems like the band have a handful of infectious tunes up their sleeve at every turn, so I’m game to listen, and hope you are too!

Andronoids Share Sunny Day

I’ve got about 8 more hours of work, and then I get to take a nice few weeks off, so I’m looking for a fun number to get me right in the mood…this Andronoids tune helped. Honestly, it reminded me of French Kids (formerly Young Girls) who we’ve worked with on our label end of things. It’s part indiepop and part classic surfy sounds and also fuzzy gaze oriented rock and infectious as all get out. The Swedish outfit just released a new self-titled LP courtesy of Ontario’s We Are Busy Bodies, so if you feel like tapping your toes today, start here!

Wildhoney Share Flywheel Single

It might have eluded many of us the other day, but Wildhoney dropped a brand new track this past week via the No Stagediving: Volume 2 Compilation. For me, it has the best of the band’s style, and might even entice me a little bit more with the heavier moments. Lauren’s voice holds the ship tightly together, sauntering in with that strong melodic performance that hints at pop sensibility. But, where they excel in comparison to their peers is that they just decide to let loose and let rip on this one. The shackles are off and you’re met with this hammering discord, but the vocals make sure you don’t mind…you don’t, do you? Proceeds from the compilation go to Baltimore’s the Ottobar.

Pleased to Meet You: The Pierce Kingans

The role of the small label is to throw support behind something you truly believe in, something you think will rise to top, something you want the whole world to hear…at least that’s how I see it. I think Subjangle Sounds it taking the same approach with the release of Pierce and Love to all the World, a compilation of sorts from The Pierce Kingnans. In this collection, you’ll find yourself enjoying 20 pop ditties, just on the right side of weird. Some tunes, like “No One Owns You,” carry the intimacy of bedroom pop, though you can get crisp rocking ditties like “It’s Bleed Too Long” too. For me, there’s just so much to digest, which is why I’m glad that the record’s a great introduction to an artists that currently has my tastebuds intrigued. What say you?

The Pale Kings Drop Poison Darling

Good old Tuesdays…a fancy twist on Mondays. So, I was in need of a good pick me up, and thought you could use the same, which is where The Pale Kings come into play. I’m not even going to lie to you; this sounds like a modern spin on the Smiths, just minus the douche-baggery that accompanies Morrissey (at least as far as I know). You’ll find spirited tunes, the sort that kick your shoes up off the dance-floor as your arms flail about. If anything, maybe your at home in your Covid workspace, so you’re quietly tapping your toes…either way…you can’t turn away from the joy in these tunes!
