Softjaw Announce Self-Titled LP

Generally not one to post about one label in different posts, but seeing as its Bandcamp Friday and you might only read one post on the site, maybe it’s this one with power-poppers Softjaw. The group has drawn comparisons to acts like Exploding Hearts, but as I’m listening through, you can almost hear an adoration for classic rock in the way they’re letting those riffs climb. That being said, if the vocal harmonizing wasn’t executed perfectly then the tune might fall apart, but that’s not the case, so you’ll just want to crank it up and rock a little attitude with your pop listening today! This is a joint release between Bachelor Records and Dandy Boy, and it should arrive by April 1st before the band heads overseas!

Power Pop from Duane Hoover

Music runs in cycles, and the last several years have the garage rock and psychedelic realms opening their doors for the power-pop maestros…and thus we have Duane Hoover. The dude seems to just write and write and write, and if you’re that dedicated you’re going to land on a gem like the one below. It’s got this light piano backbone working beneath the surface, lifting the song as the guitar has a jangling strum to it. As you dive into your day, you likely are looking for a sound that feels just right, and well, you’ll find it by listening to the new single from Le Corbeau. They’ve crafted a sound that feels akin to the power-pop of Teenage Fanclub, swirling with guitar-monies and fuzzy ambiance. Seated in the middle of all that delectable feedback is this dulcet voice, mixing it up to where it walks the tightrope between speaking and singing, yet always charming. Kiwi Jr Are Back!

We haven’t heard from Kiwi Jr since their 2022 album Chopper, but yesterday they popped back into our brains with fresh tunes. I think Jeremy Gaudet is one of those songwriters that come few and far between, toying with mundane source material and turning it into glorious pieces of poetry, not unlike Jason Lytle. Musically, the group are bringing their steady power-pop side into play, using chugging rhythms and angular notes to create indie vibe that feels like a train running out of steam as it heads to the cliff. Lots of buzz about this yesterday, and seeing as it’s my jam, I couldn’t let it pass without some love.

The Goods Announce Debut LP

It’s Friday, and the odds are you had a long weekend, good or bad or all of the above, so you need to breezy pop of the Goods in your life this morning. When the guitar came crashing into my speakers, I immediately felt the rays of sunshine looking in on me; the mood was enhanced by a stomping of classic pop drumming, pushing the pace and punch while driving home the harmonies. There’s an extra snappy bit popping off near the 1:30 mark that just crushes, so be sure you stick around for the whole tune if you want to max out your pop requirement for the day. Don’t Spoil the Fun is out on October 24th via Dandy Boy Records.

Teenage Tom Petties Share Tough Cookies

If you haven’t made room for Rally the Tropes on your purchase list, then you might want to reevaluate your budget this month, as their new single solidifies the forthcoming Teenage Tom Petties record as a must have. Like most TTP tunes, there’s a natural grittiness to the recording process, giving the tune a huge edginess and DIY mentality. But, while I adore that aspect and its lo-fi aesthetics, their penchant for hooks and guitarmonies, making everything they do infectious and with just enough punch to keep the cool kids off my back. Love looking forward to this new LP, which drops via Repeating Cloud // Safe Suburban Home on October 24th.

Pansy Share Mercy Kill Me

Vivian McCall, formerly of Jungle Green has perhaps been piling away the tunes that would make up her debut album under the name Pansy; it’s a record that documents her own transition, detailing her life before, during and after the transition. While the depths of the songwriting are quite personal, the boldness of the songs are enormous, bringing in classic power pop sounds with jangling guitars that just crush your soul in the best way possible. If you’re looking for huge melodies built into a nice power pop sound that you’d think Alex Chilton helped pen. This single is the follow up from her self-titled debut album, courtesy of Earth Libraries.

Best Wishes – A Shortcut To I Was a King

It seems like as long as we’ve been running this site we’ve been covering the work of I Was a King, and for those that weren’t there along the way, they’ve announced a compilation that’s the perfect introductory collection for those that haven’t quite whet their power-pop whistle with these greats. The band have worked with legends like Robyn Hitchcock, Sufjan Stevens and Norman Blake…to name a few. For me, the fascination has always been the gentle roll of Frode’s voice; there’s this intimacy that’s met by a certain almost pastoral nature, almost as if its a sort of wisened sage whispering to you. Honestly, if you ever wished to be transported to a place of happiness, “Lighthouse” is a great place to being; you can find it on the group’s Slow Century LP too. Once you’ve dipped your toes into the storied history of this great act, be sure to order a copy of Best Wishes – A Shortcut to I Was a King…dropping on March 7th.

Mythical Motors Announce Travelogues and Movie Stills

Matt Addison and company, aka Mythical Motors, never seem to waste any time; they just happened to sprinkle a few records out last year, and now we’re anticipating a solid new collection this Spring. It only takes two seconds for the swing of this track to immediately drop right into your lap, hitting you with these muted jangles; they have a sharpness but cling to their melodic center. For me, it’s the earnestness of the vocals throughout the chorus that’s absolutely charming; they have this feathered lightness, but still feel like they’re punching through the roof…save the moments when they’re pulled back to mix in swirls of warmth. And, for as many times as I have listened and heard the familiarity, there are little interchanges in the song that completely change the direction, so each corner turned feels like a breath of fresh air. Travelogues and Movie Stills will be out via Repeating Cloud on April 18th.

The High Water Marks Return with YFF

The High Water Marks are one of my absolutely favorite bands from the last few years; their last LP, Your Next Wolf, was probably one of the greatest pieces of power pop we’ve heard in years. Now, they’re back with a fresh single to honor the election cycle, taking aim at fascism and all those who’ve encouraged it’s rebirth into the mainstream consciousness. While it’s such an incredibly important topic, there’s still much charm to this track that it’s hard to ignore their graceful approach to the subject, making you melt with melody like nothing else you’ve heard this week. Maybe not Beyonce, but a great political piece you can crank up real loud.
