More New Prince Rama

princeIt’s no surprise that Prince Rama is making waves this year, with anticipation building towards their new record, Xtreme Now on its way soon. Listening to this latest single should only cement the band’s continued rise; it’s the most pop-centric we’ve heard from the group…in my opinion. While the group still maintain some of their sense of oddity, such as writingthis track in Viking ruins on a remote island, there’s nothing odd or “out there” about this song. It’s an exhilerating piece of pop music, beckoning to be played by every blog, radio and listener around. Look for the new LP on March 4th via Carpark.

Show Pics: Dan Deacon @ The Mohawk (4/23)

Dan DeaconI think Austin may have skipped Spring.

I had never been a Dan Deacon fan, but recent tracks wooed me out last Thursday to The Mohawk to finally check out what many friends claimed to be an “event”, even chastising me for not having been. Indeed, I had a good time and, indeed, I enjoyed the live set musically along with the spectacle. Dan was joined on the lineup by Ben O’Brien and Prince Rama.

I have plenty of pics and a few thoughts after the break. Join me, won’t you?

I’m Going To Dan Deacon @ The Mohawk (Tonight)

Image by Frank HamiltonIt is Thursday. Didn’t much feel like seeing Matt & Kim again, but kinda wanted to get out to a show and I took a look around. I have been on the fence about Dan Deacon for a while, but the latest effort puts more emphasis and fun instead of challenge. OK, you have me interested. Add a little Prince Rama action #trustfall. Add some bonus wordbeats courtesy Ben O’Brien. Add it is at The Mohawk. Add that it is almost the weekend. $16 at the door, allegedly. It is like they are paying you to have fun. What a bargain…

Let’s party.

Show Preview: Prince Rama + Silk Rodeo Debut @ Red 7 (6.23)

prince-rama-456-022311

Date Sunday, June 23rd
Location Red 7
Doors 9:00 PM
Tickets $8 from Transmission

The last time I caught Prince Rama in town, I was mesmerized by their performance, so it goes without saying that you should take it upon yourself to catch such an incredible show.  But, more importantly, there are a slew of local Austin acts kicking things off, such as Sleep Over and Technicolor Hearts.  More importantly, we’ll all be treated to the debut of new Austin band, Silk Rodeo.  A member of the live act has called the music “smooth wave” and promised lasers! You don’t want to miss that.  You can catch a video of the band’s single, “All Yr Own” right HERE.  Show up early, support the locals, and tip the bartenders; it’s going to be a special night from all the acts.

Psych Fest Day Two: Photos and Thoughts

Day One was fun.

Day Two, however, was met with a splitting sinus headache and stories of crowded photo pits with iPhones and friends of the friends of the bands that got in as “Press”. Such is the festival atmosphere. It is like an insurance conference where normal human beings sometimes get a little nuts.

Regardless, we had a punch list and we were going to punch it. Head past the break for a few notes and plenty of pics.

SXSW Interviews: Prince Rama

As we continue our SXSW coverage, we’re bringing to you a group that sadly gets lumped in with psychedelic rock, not that we don’t like that style, but Prince Rama is so much more than that.  They’re a whole lot more experimental, combinging elements of Eastern world music, creating an atypical sound from the get-go.  They played a great show in Austin earlier this year with Gang Gang Dance, so we expect another great performance. Oh, and apparently cats are the loneliest thing if their owned by touring bands. Read more

Show Preview: Gang Gang Dance @ the Mohawk (10/3)

Date Monday, October 3rd
Location Mohawk
Doors 630p
Tickets $11 from Frontgate

I know, I know, Taking Back Sunday is playing Monday night, but this show over at the Mohawk is going to be far better, I promise. Some of the most creative indie music being made is coming to our town tonight courtesy of Gang Gang Dance.  They’re fresh off the summer release of their album, Eye Contact.  Their known for extravagant shows, and lets hope this is no exception.  But, you get twice as lucky if you come early, as opening band Prince Rama are a force to be reckoned with in their own right.  From what I know, PR brings one of the best live acts to town, so you couple that with Gang Gang Dance and you’re left with one brilliant show that’s a can’t miss. Pretty killer way to start off October with our friends at the Mohawk.
