Fortunato Durutti Marinetti Drops a Perfect Pair

There aren’t a lot of songwriters working in the fashion of Fortunato Durutti Marinetti; in a sense, he resembles more of a troubadour at a lounge, though is wordplay is far more sophisticated. On this tune, the track is a subtle love ballad, and its the subtleties that draw you in as the track unfolds. You’ll find these little keyboard stabs, giving a lift to Marinetti’s vocal delivery, sort of operating like a dance around one another. The guitar licks within have a little shimmy, sort of wiggling about in the background, though they recede for the sublime little breakdown in the song’s latter half. I find it difficult to express the joy in listening to a new Fortunato Durutti Marinetti tune, most often because I feel my words are inadequate to describe a poet such as he. Alas, there’s a new record on the horizon titled Bitter Sweet, Sweet Bitter, and our first listen already puts you on notice that the craft is something beyond special. It seemingly opens with a spoken word moment, but within five seconds, the arrangement work that elevates a Fortunato takes off; horn blasts, wiggling guitars, jazzed up drums all build the texture that serves as the background to his latest piece. You’ll notice a similarity to a Destroyer, but if I’m being honest, Marinetti has a slightly tighter grip on melody, softening the distinctive accent as his charms sweep across your speakers. This new album should definitely fill you with listening joy, so grab it from Quindi Records before July 25th.

Dead Bandit Announce Self-Titled LP

This Spring, Chicago outfit Dead Bandit will unfurl their carefully crafted self-titled LP; it’s an offering, from our first listen, that revolves around an expansive bit of negative space and the careful brush strokes that fill in the gaps. This first single dropped in with this heavy pulse that took on a bit of moodiness from the get go; it felt like some sort of opening to a post-apocalyptic landscape, as you could feel this sort of bleakness in the way it opens. From there, the duo gently play with expectations, letting light guitar notes fall in and out of step with that snare drum march. Nice little morning seance here; the self-titled LP is out on March 14th via Quindi Records.

Looks like today won’t be quite the bonkers release day that we had yesterday, so it’s letting me go back and enjoy some hits I got over our little break, like this forthcoming LP from Expose. We’ve got a couple of tracks for you to check out below, each one offering a sonic glimpse at what lies ahead. “Speed Dial” is a frantic number with thundering drums and feedback greeting you as the vocals echo through the speakers; it’s like the greatest car chase scene you haven’t quite seen…and then it ends. On the album, it sets you right into “The Constant,” which hints at a broader approach to their walls of noise; the pace is slower and the vocals are on a slow march, rather than a distant echo…all of it still packing that powerful punch. They’ll release ETC on January 24th via Quindi Records.

Really stoked to spend more time with this forthcoming Dead Bandit LP, as I’ll admit, I often find myself a bit bored with a lot of the modern post-rock stuff. There’s something in this duo that really makes it feel fresh again, which I’m grateful for today. For instance, this tune opens with this anxiety inducing bit of atmospherics; it’s a dense backdrop to your favorite new sci-fi series. And, as you begin to feel the edge, the group lock into a melodic group of shaking percussion and careful key/guitar lines. Sliding into that melody, you’re hooked, it’s like the saving grace, feeling that rush as you switch from fear into comfort; they build the tune from there, letting you dip your toes into the melodic water, only so they can bring that haunting atmosphere quietly back into the tune. Their new LP Memory Thirteen will be out on February 9th via Quindi.

After the incredible success of Memory’s Fool, Fortunato Durutti Marinetti is ready to return with Eight Waves in Search of an Ocean. Today, we’ve got the newest single, a meditation on the state of labor, for both the worker and the labor itself, all of it circling into this monotonous oblivion. While the lyrical content details the cycle of continuous work for the sake of work, it’s supported by this incredible synth setting. At times, there’s this uplifting nature and pure nod to post-disco new wave, but on the other side, it feels open, sort of letting the song run its course, into oblivion. The new LP is out on November 3rd via Quindi Records/Soft Abuse.

For some reason, ever since I devoured Memory’s Fool, Fortunato Durutti Marinetti felt like the natural heir to Jens Lekman; the songwriting had the same joyousness, even in serious tracks; it also had layers of depth, sonically speaking, which is clearly a gift in the songwriting. Today, we’ve got the news I’ve been waiting for, there’s a new LP headed our way real soon. This go round, we hear the project was meant to be a melting pot of synths, saxophones and violins; it’s like a chillwave playlist at the local club. As always, the songwriting craft is the perfect cocoon for the vocals, often spoken, then wrapped in the melodic texture. The saxophone work feels omnipresent, like its going to play in your head all night long, or, as I prefer to hear it, like the perfect musical accompaniment to a poetry reading. If you’re into Destoyer or the aforementioned Lekman, press play, slide back into your chair, and let the song dance inside you. Eight Waves in Search of an Ocean is out in November via Quindi and Soft Abuse.

Monde UFO Share Garden of Agony

I have obviously been a big fan of what Monde UFO are doing, bridging a gap between quieted bedroom recordings and bossa nova sentimentality, all of which come to head on the final single from their forthcoming LP. Clearly the guitar strum makes a nod to the Brazilian musical genre, though there’s this whispering vocal that really begs you to use the song to clear out everything else in your head. In listening, you get these odd little notes that seem out of place, but for me, that’s where the song’s of the band get interesting. It’s like they’re trying to distract you from the core beauty of the tune, inevitably drawing you closer into the tune itself. The band will be releasing Vandalized Statue to be Replaced with Shrine on April 21st via Quindi Records.
