Remington Super 60 Return with Time to Breathe

It’s been a hot minute since we last heard from Remington Super 60, but the Norwegian outfit returns with a slight sonic shift. They open this new single with a heavy pulse beneath, almost club-oriented in its bass vibe, punching the cones on your speakers. While the groove is an omni-present feel throughout the tune, they twist the chorus into a shimmering bit of modern disco; it’s got hints of indiepop true to the band’s groove, but that pulse behind lets the song move into some classic territory. It’s a nice twist that wouldn’t seem out of place as the B-Side to “Heart of Glass.”

Norway pop outfit Remington Super 60 have been churning out some incredible pop nuggets the last few years, and today they add to that by dropping their Nouvelle Noveau EP. The opening track “Talk With You” should immediately turn you onto the band’s timelessness; Elisabeth’s voice could have come from one of your favorite 60s girl groups or been the intoxicating soundtrack to one of your recent indie flicks. I love the feathery nature of her notes, but it perhaps wouldn’t seem so sublime if Christoffer Schou didn’t add these delicate little touches to give the song’s lift, like the distant guitars in “I Won’t Change My Mind” and “Still Near.” Overall, the whole of the release feels like sitting down with a bowl of hot soup on a freezing day…nothing ever felt so right. Remington Super 60 will be releasing a new album in February of next year, and while it deals with the breakup of core members of the group, this song shows they’re still able to work together to build something incredible. Christopher’s production here is sublime; it almost is so strong that it feels like its completely hidden behind Elisabeth’s voice. That doesn’t mean its not a valuable bit, just means that he knows his role at times is to build the pop scaffolding so that she can climb to the pop pinnacle. And does she ever; there’s such warmth, such timelessness; I hope it plays on forever. Look for the new EP next year courtesy of Cafe Superstar Recordings.

I really needed something soothing this morning to kind of temporarily let the pain of the world subside, or at least get outside my own head for a moment. Luckily, Remington Super 60 had a delightful new single to share with me (and you!) off their forthcoming EP, and its that sort of dreamy indiepop that makes you feel like you’ve been wrapped up in some oversized weighted blanket, calming every bit of your soul. It’s that subtle brand of pop with quieted rhythms working beneath a melodic softness, seeping into your skin carefully…you could use that right now, I’m sure. We’ll keep you up to date with more details…but as of now…this new EP is slated for the fall.

Looks like we’re spending a lot of time up in the Scandinavian part of the world today, which popped up earlier, and now brings us Remington Super 60. We’ve covered the band before, showing our appreciation for their beautiful pop sound. Here they return with this subtle, almost lounge-ready, gem; the pacing definitely lends itself to a moment of early morning reflection. Nice gentle bubble of bass beneath the feathery vocals; this is the sort of number that’s going to make your day infinitely better just be soaking in its natural warmth. The band release their aptly titled, New EP, today, so if you enjoy, go hear the rest.

The history of Remington Super 60 goes back over 20 years ago, and while that alone is remarkable in this day and age, what matters most is that they sound just as delightful now as they did back in ’98. I think the first immediate comparison that comes to mind is that ground popularized by Camera Obscura; it has that same structure of indiepop, bringing in classic pop sounds and updating them in a more modern fashion. Of course, there’s this natural warmth here too, which almost makes me wish it was Winter time, so I could sit by a fire and let the magic of this track do the rest of the work for me. Look for a new EP from the group later this Fall.

Let’s face it; Winter is right around the corner. You can put holidays aside and all that, as this track from Remington Super 60 is more about the advance of cold weather than holiday cheer. That’s not to say that the understated guitar and tambourine jangle won’t bring you a touch of cheer on their own. The vocals are nice and warm, contrasting the imagery and the band’s call for snow that will stick to the ground. Be it in Norway, where the band lives, or here in Texas, a little cold weather is never a bad thing, especially if you have a nice indiepop tune like this one to enjoy by the fire.
