ATX Spotlight: Orthy Covers Tom Petty

OrthyYep, another cover, another day.  But, Austin’s Orthy don’t just cover Tom Petty’s “Listen to Her Heart,” they totally reimagine the song itself, leaving no resemblance of the original save the lyrics.  There’s these dark electronic pulses during the chorus, while the remainder of the song is a smoothed-out electro croon.  The song features on a digital release that just came out this week via Dither Down, allowing listeners the chance to also listen to various remixes from the group’s E.M.I.L.Y. EP, which we raved about last year.  Give it a listen, and enjoy your day just a little better.

Free Album Reworking from PS I Love You

One of the groups that we fell in love with in 2011 was PS I Love You after jamming to their Meet Me at the Muster Station album. With their quick rise to popularity, the band was traveling all around the States, which led to the recording of the Muster Sessions.  It’s an album comprised of reworkings and live recordings the group did while hitting up Daytrotter and KEXP, as well as other spots.  Basically, it’s like a collection of John Peel-esque B-sides and remixes for you to enjoy.  They’re currently giving it away free in anticipation of their new record, Death Dreams, which comes out on May 8th.  For now, you can download the FREE ALBUM, and sample the hooks the band are sure to bring with their new effort.

Mellow Bit of Cool from Spanish Prisoners

Late last year, Spanish Prisoners released their album, Golds Fool, via their bandcamp page.  Even with such a quiet release, the band made huge waves on the Internet, and definitely captured our attention.  They’re back now with the second single from that record, which includes two new remixes that you can grab HERE.  It’s a soft number, but it definitely reminds me of the band’s abilities to create emotion evoking songs that you can listen to time and time again.  They’ve also started a Kickstarter Page that will allow the band to travel, bringing their craftsmanship to your ears from coast to coast.  And don’t forget they’ll be popping up at SXSW too! Here’s the original track, “Downtown Chicagoland.”
