Big Bill Residency and Brand New Single

Our long time favorites, and ATH Records alumni, Big Bill are here to make sure that the month of June is as exciting as ever; they’re kicking off a residency at The Electric Church this very night! They’ll bring along their friends every Friday and provide you with an evening of great Austin music and, likely, sweaty fun.

In celebration of their residency, the band has just uploaded a brand new single (rumored to be on a forthcoming LP). I love the playful exuberance in the song, especially once they get things going with the shuffling guitar chords and rolling drums. This could be the hit dance crazeof the summer (I think most showgoers in Austin already have it down!). Come on out to the Electric Church tonight and be sure to buy the song from the band so they can go make you more hits!

Show Preview: Sweet Spirit Residency @ the Blackheart (7/5 + Saturday in July)

Having one of your favorite bands break up is always a bummer, but sometimes you get lucky and end up with a new favorite cobbled from the pieces of the old. Saturday at the Blackheart two bands will stand as a reminder that great things can be built out of broken pieces.
July 5th at the Blackheart is the first of Sweet Spirit’s residency shows. Sweet Spirit was formed after the demise of local favorite powerhouse Bobby Jealously. Commandeered by the energetic front women Sabrina Ellis, Sweet Spirit is poised to absolutely destroy the Austin music scene. Sabrina Ellis’ melodies are immediately engaging, and combined with her clever pop lyrics have a way of latching onto the brains of listeners. Ellis is backed on stage by an equally talented band. Sweet Spirit is one of those rare finds where the entirety of the backing band is talented enough to each front one of their own groups, and with Ellis at the helm the sum is certainly greater than the parts. Sweet Spirit takes the inside stage at midnight every Saturday this month, so no there are no excuses to miss this band.

Another highlight of the night is sure to be Lӧwin. Fans of the now defunct the Couch already know what a vocal powerhouse Sara Houser is. In Lӧwin, Sara Houser takes the guitar heavy sounds of the Couch and condenses them into more focused, sculpted songs. There’s no fat or gristle on the recently released two tracks Lobo and Heave Ho. Lӧwin plays on the inside stage at 8:30, and if I could make a prediction that will be one sweaty, rockin’ room.

Netherfriends Residency in Austin!!!

netherfriendsLast week I brought you this rad jam from Netherfriends, the project of Shawn Rosenblatt.  He came to Austin recently to start up a residency at the heralded local venue Cheer Up Charlies; he plays every Wednesday night throughout the month of December (including tonight!).  Shawn claims to have come our way to take advantage of the weather, but I feel that he’s been rather unlucky in that matter (though today is beautiful). You can catch him playing his beautiful blend of pop music each week, accompanied by various friends.  We wish him much success in his visit, and we wish you would get out there and see him! I mean, this song alone warrants your attendance.

Announcing Bloody Knives Beerland Residency

We’ve got to get out and support local Austin bands people.  I know, we all live here and love the music, and go to our fair amount of shows, but I feel like the attendees for great Austin acts have dwindled in recent years–unfortunately. Well, now’s your chance to rectify that, and get out to Beerland this Thursday to support the July residency of Bloody Knives.  They may not be the most well known band…yet, but their live shows are phenomenal, and the music just as good (if not better).  It’s time for us to back up our talk and get out to more local shows, so you know we’ll be here.  If you can’t make it this Thursday, it’s sort of okay, because you can plan ahead and make it to next weeks show, again, at Beerland.
