Zac Denton of the Ocean Party Passes Away

I’m generally a man of few emotions, but news of the passing of Zac Denton is hitting me pretty hard. I released one LP from the Ocean Party on my label, mostly due to the fact that I kept in close contact via the Internet with the band. Since those days, they’ve pulled out several other releases, all excellent. I was fortunate to host the group on their US tour, and I spent a few days trying to get the band accustomed to Texas. I remember Zac as this giant of a man, with an even bigger smile; he worked the stage like an aged veteran, he was just this gentle giant happy to be playing music with his friends. It’s strange how chance encounters leave lasting impressions, and I’m sure everyone whose spent time with the Ocean Party feels the same great loss. My thoughts are with his brother Lachlan, the band and his family.

In honor of Zac, the group have released their new LP The Oddfellow’s Hall a few days ahead of its release; you can stream it below.

BOYS Drop Another Single

If you’re not looking forward to BOYS‘ debut Rest In Peace, then it’s probably best if you acquaint yourself now, as this record is destined to end up on every year end list. I like to think of this tune as the contemplative number on the record; it opens with slow vocals creeping over your emotions like the fog drifting into town. There’s a brief burst of emphatic pop explosions, before reverting back to the subdued feeling of wonder. We stay there until the track comes to a close, bursting with volume and force before the track fades away. The LP will drop on May 11th via PNKSLM.

Another Enchanting Boys Tune

Been listening to this new Boys track quite a bit this morning, continuing to find myself lost in the tune. Of course, I’m a sucker for anything opening with a piano as the backbone; you can hear the chords played in the background for the majority of the track, though they bounce up when necessary. While there’s a solemnity to the vocals of Nora Karlsson, there’s also this uplifting spirit that usually resides in the hearts of indiepop fans…most recently popularized by the likes of Alvvays (with a solid heart in Sweden’s pop). The song has this ornate quality to it that charms, presented so simply and openly.PNKSLM continues to release incredible LPs, and Rest In Peace should be no different when it drops on May 11th.

The last time I caught Prince Rama in town, I was mesmerized by their performance, so it goes without saying that you should take it upon yourself to catch such an incredible show.  But, more importantly, there are a slew of local Austin acts kicking things off, such as Sleep Over and Technicolor Hearts.  More importantly, we’ll all be treated to the debut of new Austin band, Silk Rodeo.  A member of the live act has called the music “smooth wave” and promised lasers! You don’t want to miss that.  You can catch a video of the band’s single, “All Yr Own” right HERE.  Show up early, support the locals, and tip the bartenders; it’s going to be a special night from all the acts.
