Power Pop from Curling

There is so much going on in this new Curling tune that you sort of have to peel it layer by layer, uncovering new little bits and pieces along way. When it opens with this synthesized wash you’re momentarily thinking you might be on some space-aged journey, and you’re not entirely far off on that one…though they quickly push into brilliant power pop moments; there’s something in the craft that’s both 90s alt rock and 2000s indie…like Ash partying with Grandaddy. Then, as the tune progresses, they pull back some of the covers on their craft, leaving you with these subtle melodies before smashing forth with more pop hooks. Such a wonderful tune, courtesy of Royal Oakie Records.

Sea Dramas Release Every Problem Created for Us

Here were are on a Friday with another single from a San Francisco band, although Sea Dramas are taking the whole “fog pop” sound into their own hands, channeling a mix of baroque crooners into their sound. At times, you can grab wisps of acts like the Clientele, especially if you jump into “Brooding Teenagers;” it reminds me of something Richard Hawley would write, backed by these sweeping arrangements that elevate the bedroom croon. There’s this cool heaviness throughout the record too, at least in mood, as each tune has a bit of a shadow hanging over it, challenging the pop constructs, and in that, the juxtaposition only adds to the charm. Every Problem Created for Us is out today via Royal Oakie Records.

Tom Henry Drops Art House

While you’re getting bombarded by all the great releases today, you’ll also find some little treasures in the music world of singles, like this new Tom Henry track. Something in the craft of this song finds me reminiscing on my childhood growing up and listening to 50s rock n’ roll songs, though you can also kind of hear bits of Costello or Lowe in the delivery. That natural boogie inclination shouldn’t be discarded, with a ditty-worthy exploding in the chorus where you’re drawn into a classic doo-wop vibe; you’ll want to grab your Valentine and swing them about your living quarters. Henry will release Songs to Sing and Dance To on June 27th via Royal Oakie.
