Sumos Share Enemies Single; Surfacing Out Next Week

If you are looking at this month’s release schedule, you should certainly have the drop of Sumos’ Surfacing LP next Friday penciled in to your “things to rock out to” list. With one week to go, they’re sharing the energetic “Enemies,” which to me feels like a huge rush of sugar straight to the body; it’s like chugging a ton of RedBull than running about with your mates while you all don huge grins. The thumping rhythm section here sets the scene, but the vocal performance stretching the melody through every single moment was the surefire charm to get me to turn this one all the way to 11. Surfacing drops next week via Meritorio/Safe Suburban Home.

Sumos Drop New Single: Small Talk

Yesterday we were treating you to the electronic excursion of Manchester’s Orielles, but today, we’re going to the city’s softer pop side with a fresh single from Sumos. When the guitar notes pushed through my speakers at the start, I already began to swoon; this is the brand of indiepop that offers those crisp jangles and soothing vocals. The hook of this song works between the juxtaposition of two guitar styles, with one being sharp and angular while the other works in a more distorted manner, so it all feels sunny with a chance of thunderstorms…but like the weather in Austin, it quickly fades into more sunshine. Strap in, put on your shades and enjoy the warmth of Spring. Sumos will drop Surfacing on May 12th via Meritorio and Safe Suburban Home.

Teenage Tom Petties Share New AA Single

Teenage Tom Petties won us over with the self-titled LP they dropped, but they don’t miss a beat with their brand new punchy AA single. Both tunes on the single are anthemic jangling pop-punk, perhaps with more allegiance to punk. Honestly, “Posters” is precisely the style of pop punk that has me screaming at the top of my lungs as I mow the lawn and frighten the neighbors; the riffs are fast and furious, with a steady rhythm and lyrics you can easily sing too. Plus, the brevity of the singles make it easy to press play and run through them both again and again, just to memorize the hook-laden fun! Coming to us courtesy of Safe Suburban Home/Repeating Cloud.

Sumos Announce Surfacing

Funny how I spent the night watching Manchester acts only to come home to a track from another band from the area: Sumos. The group just announced Surfacing, their debut LP for Meritorio and Safe Suburban Home, with this new pop ditty to entice you to give it a listen. For me, this song embodies almost a classic alternative rock feel; it’s got just the faintest hints of noise fuzzing out the edges, but with this core that just seems breezy and euphoric. I was easily hooked by the teasing intro, switching from a lo-fi vocal to something brighter and more emphatic, building in that sweet hook for my ears. If you’re enjoying what you hear, Surfacing is out on May 12th.

Galore Share Video for New Living + Announce Blush EP

Generally speaking, Friday’s always seem to carry with them a bit of yearning, and perhaps you’ve found the soundtrack to your yearning below by way of this fresh new single from San Francisco’s Galore. They’ve just announced their Blush EP, with this striking single, with the promise that the five new songs come across with a bit more “arthouse, droney sound” being employed. You can hear that here, as there’s a crisp jangle, albeit one that seems a touch decaffeinated at first. Still, the quartet finds a way to punctuate their sound, punching up the volume a bit at the 1:22 to mark, allowing overlapping vocals and a heavier texture to sort of raise the bar on vibe. Even with that kick, the band still manage to take another twist, keeping that textured feel, but bringing back a sense of longing, only coming from the vocals in the song’s latter half. All of this is set to a wonderful camping adventure shot at Point Reyes National Seashore by the band’s own Ava Rosen. The Blush EP comes your way on Friday the 16th, courtesy of Paisley Shirt Records and Safe Suburban Home. Pre-Order HERE!

RE Seraphin Shares Stuck in Reno Video

RE Seraphin just recently released the Swingshift EP, but the world doesn’t stop once you drop a release; you’ve got to tour and promote and tweet and all that jazz. So, today, we’ve got a new video for the single “Stuck in Reno,” bringing in a mixture of jangle and twang…surely a nod to Seraphin’s time spent down in Texas (right?!). This song has a nice little backing vocal track that really raises the bar on the melody, giving a soothing charm to the groove. If you’re into what you hear, its available in 12″ and Cassette formats via Mt. St. Mtn./Dandy Boy/Tear Jerk/Safe Suburban Home. Also, be sure to catch the band running up the West Coast in mid-July with Tony Jay!

R.E. Seraphin Shares Big Break

While I’m sure we’d all welcome a second EP just like R.E. Seraphin‘s last one, A Room Forever, it seems that he’s pushing himself to get beyond the sound of his peers, even going so far as to look to include “Journey-style solos” in his new effort. For me, despite pushing to break loose from the confines of lo-fi, Mr. Seraphin doesn’t lose any of the subtleties that guarantee the joy of listening to his work. On this new single, you get the textured layering of guitar sounds, with some staking claim to that aforementioned bravado, while the other drives the tune’s rhythm forward. His vocals get some backing throughout too, adding another careful layer of harmony and charm to the mix; it’s clear he’s really maximizing his talents. His new Swingshift EP is out Friday via Mt. St. Mtn./Dandy Boy/Tear Jerk/Safe Suburban Home.

Did You Hear About the Geddy Laurance/Michael O Split?

It’s always great to have friends reach out to you and point you in the proper direction, so I’m glad that I heard about this new Geddy Laurance/Michael O split tape before it was too late! We’ve covered Michael O many times (as Mantles and solo), and Geddy played drums in everyone’s favorite, Boyracer, so now we get them both together! With the GL tune, you get a little more pacing, primarily with a faster strum and thicker drum beat; the Laurance vocals do have a touch of a fading daylight feel to them, sort of wilting as they hit your ears. You’ll also find a contrasting guitar line working against the strum, sort of like the counter-punch to the jangle, which was a really nice recording touch. Michael’s tune has some bop to it, so don’t think its totally gone, but his voice sounds a touch fragile in the tune below (which I adore); there’s also this backing vocal popping in that sort of reminds me of Television Personalities somehow. And, this probably sounds like a slight, but there’s just a certain feel to Mr. O’s tune that almost feels like its still in the works, like things aren’t finished or polished; its pop honest at its finest. If, like me, you’re in love, then grab the split from Safe Suburban Home this Friday!
