Fake Fruit Announce New LP

If you thought post-punk was heading down the middle of the road as of late, then maybe you need to turn towards Fake Fruit today. The band draw inspiration from the likes of Pylon and Wire, and you can definitely hear that sound burrowing through the guitars on this new single. But, Hannah D’Amato solidifies the group as a powerhouse with her performance; I love how she’s got this huge booming voice, but she’s capable of softening it up to draw in that slight dash of pop sensibility into play…just watch out when she decides to let forth an emphatic howl. Can’t get this jam outta my head! Look for their self-titled LP to drop via Rocks in Your Head on March 5th.

Dark Tea Announces Self Titled LP

It’s been a couple of years since the release of the Dark Tea‘s last LP, and now we’ve got news that a brand new self-titled effort is on its way this April. Amidst all my jangles and post-punk tendencies, I’m still drawn to the balladeers that encourage that sense of Americana longing. Gary Canino’s voice on this single just seems like he’s out there with hope on the horizon, giving himself up to the graces of the world. On the surface, it’s a great pop song, but if you want to dig in deeper, just listen for the all the careful arrangement work put into the background of this tune; it’s something that Gary put great care into when recording this latest LP, grabbing 20+ musicians to aid in fleshing out his songwriting. Damn, its hard to turn this song. Dark Tea will be out on April 30th via Fire Talk.

Pansy Share Woman of Your Dreams

I’m really intrigued by Vivian McCall, both in regards to her recording project as Pansy, and her journey of transitioning, which is the thematic element that runs central to her debut LP. Musically, the song hits on all the soft spots of my heart; it has this simple beat looped in to give you a bit of a toe-tapping stomp, though it also seems to sort of bring in elements of classic rock n’ roll…the sort my mom played non-stop when I was a kid. Just imagine a really young Elvis hanging out and recording in a bedroom on a 4 track, and well, that’s what you get here…and you’ll love it! This record should be out at soon via Earth Libraries.

More Music from Kelly Duplex

I’ve really been enjoying the stuff I’ve heard from New Oreleans’ Kelly Duplex; they’re running out singles to prepare you for the release of their self-titled album. I love the heavy immediacy of this tune, racing into this wall of ledded guitars vibrating all the stuff on your walls before the vocals slink in to provide a careful balance. But, as much as that works for me, I was totally sold when they break it down right at the 1 minute mark for some crunchy guitar work and a slower build; it gives the song this infectiousness I adore (reminds me of our own Growl) before blasting forth again. The new LP is out on February 12th.

Andronoids Share Sunny Day

I’ve got about 8 more hours of work, and then I get to take a nice few weeks off, so I’m looking for a fun number to get me right in the mood…this Andronoids tune helped. Honestly, it reminded me of French Kids (formerly Young Girls) who we’ve worked with on our label end of things. It’s part indiepop and part classic surfy sounds and also fuzzy gaze oriented rock and infectious as all get out. The Swedish outfit just released a new self-titled LP courtesy of Ontario’s We Are Busy Bodies, so if you feel like tapping your toes today, start here!

Kelly Duplex Shares Hoverround

I woke up this morning wanting something that was heavy, but still clung tightly to the simple pop structures that make me tick, so I was lucky to have this Kelly Duplex tune waiting for me. Honestly, the New Orleans trio reminds me a lot of our friends Growl (RIP), intertwining emo tendencies and power pop riffs to sublime effect. You can see yourself in this song, bouncing on your bed and playing those heavy air guitar riffs, only to collapse as the song fades out and a huge grin creeps across your face. Sometimes a simple rock song is all you need to turn the day around. Look for the band to release their self-titled LP via Strange Daisy on February 12th.

Give Foliage a Listen

Somehow this new Foliage LP skipped by my usual listening rotation, but I’ve really been enjoying the whole the self-titled record. Manuel Joseph Walker is crafting these dreamy pop numbers, often woven around gratifying little hooks looped together. One of my favorites on the most recent LP is this upbeat jam, “Industry.” It’s got this heel-kicking toe-tap to it, while Walker’s get layered upon each other building in this warm texture that adds depth to this nostalgic pop bent; I’m just a huge sucker for the tones of the guitar on this particular tune. It’s Friday, you like new stuff, so give it a listen.

Music in Exile Shares Yelena Single from Ausecuma Beats

Admittedly, the majority of the music coverage on the Australian scene is predominantly white (including our own), but what’s great are the various projects giving voice to the diverse population of the country/continent, like Music in Exile. Earlier this year, they brought us new music from Gordon Koang, and today I’m super stoked to share this really great tune from Ausecuma Beats. The band is made up of 9 individuals, all with different experiences and backgrounds, united in trying to create a new brand of music with its own voice. Just in the lyrical content alone, you get the switch between Spanish and English, as the various musical influences swirl all around. This tune praises a Pulla African woman who is seen as beautiful and sought after, but she escapes the expectations to seek out a life of her own. Something a little different, but something worthy of our time today. Their debut self-titled album drops on November 20th.

One Minus One Share Lindenthal

When listening through this new single from Germany’s One Minus One, I’m immediately reminded of the Black Watch. Somewhere in here, there’s flirting with that upbeat jangle of indiepop, though things get pulled back into that sort of dreamy trajectory, highlighted by a sort of heavy melodic vocal. This is that brand of pop that sort of encapsulates that wistful longing, that search for something beyond, so I’m grateful that we can start out our musical day with you and this tune. If you like what you hear, this track will appear on the self-titled album that drops on November 6th.

The Color Waves Drop Self-Titled LP

It’s possible that you might have missed the new Color Waves LP over the weekend, but my goal this week has been to bounce back on some great releases I’ve been in love with on my end. It’s actually been 5 years since I’ve heard anything from this outfit…that was their lone 7″ on Cloudberry Records in 2015. I’d love to cram this down your throat as an indiepop staple for 2020, but to be fair, it feels like so much more, like a pop tree branching out to tickle the various sub-genres. For a great deal, they remind me an awful lot of the Lucksmiths, using these jangling guitar notes in a more slower fashion, dragging every last drop of melody from each note, letting harmonics float into the ether. It feels like a fireside record where you can curl up with someone you love and share in the simple joys of a truly great LP. The Color Waves is available now in all the usual spots! It should also say something that Jeremy Jensen of The Very Most (who I covered yesterday) bought this album! You know what to do!
