Ringo Deathstarr Share God Help the Ones You Love

One of our favorite ATX acts dropped this delicious tune last Friday, and since we’re back in full force, it only seems natural that I’d get this Ringo Deathstarr tune out there for you. I love how the song starts off with this ominous mood, like you’re descending into the depths of the Earth with no return in sight. But, once the vocals come in, the song peels back and allows the guitars to swirl around the more crystalline feel of the vocals. The rhythm section keeps harnessing that darkness, building in the perfect balancing act between dark and light on the wondrous first single off the band’s forthcoming self-titled LP; it drops on March 27th via Club AC30.

Airy Pop Tune from Witch’s Wall

Sometimes you just want to drift off into the weekend; this track from Alabama’s Witch’s Wall should help you do just that. The notes are soft and gentle throughout, occasionally playful and purposefully thoughtful. A steadiness in the song’s craft allows for the vocals to come in like breaths of air, released into the ether and folding themselves into the melodic texture of the track itself. There’s a more pronounced pop sensibility in the song’s latter half, though a careful ear will still find the band meandering through the finer details just beneath the mix. Their self-titled will be out on April 3rd via Cornelius Chapel.

The Flatmates Announce Self-Titled Debut

With singles dating all the way back to the mid-80s, it’s hard to believe that this year will mark the debut LP for Bristol outfit The Flatmates. They drop this new single today with the announcement of their self-titled album, and like the band, it seems to straddle decades of style in its sound. Opening with buzzsaw guitars and smashing drums it almost feels like they’re working in Ramones territory, but that’s before singer Lisa Bouvier comes into the picture. She’s got this voice that seems like its riding the edge of pop singer and punk; there’s a softness coated in a definite attitude that’s simply intoxicating. Their debut is being handled by HHBTM Records and The Subway Organization.

Sorry I Slept on Alpine Subs

Earlier this month Alpine Subs released their debut self-titled LP, and I’d like to personally apologize for giving you late notice of how great the LP is. It’s weird, it has this strange blend between the mid 00s college indie rock vibe and the omni-present power-pop; it uses these two consistently, giving you 12 songs that can be either soft or be seen as rock. I like the 2/3 punch of “Miles Away” and “Menomonee; the former has this soft swagger akin to I Was a King, while the latter has this innate softness in its style that gives you a little ear candy. But, the more I sit around and listen, the more I realize that the entirety of Alpine Subs is probably best suited for a sit-down/listen-all-the-way-through moment, but you do you…just stream it below.

Another Lust for Youth Tune

We’re not too far off from the release of the latest Lust for Youth LP, and with that, the (now) duo have dropped another teaser track. I think this is their most playful and earnest tune; they clearly deliver their pop sensibility in the first few seconds, but they don’t just drop in and let that hook hit you over the head, instead teasing it out after the 1:15 mark. Even then, it’s brief and exuberant, hitting upon that sensation of yearning. Somehow this tune seems more sterile, revolving more on the tones of the vocals, which is a nice little twist in the album (or so I hope). Sacred Bones drop Lust for Youth on June 7th.

Another Ditty from the Infinites

It feels like the Infinites are one of the hottest commodities in town right now, and by that, I mean, they’re one of the absolute bands bouncing about. But, there are those that live outside the confines of our fair city, and you should definitely put the band on your “must listen” to list. Press play on this new single from their forthcoming LP and you’ll get intoxicated by the guitar tones; they have that natural bounce we adore from the surf-rock genre, though its presentation with the vocals definitely leaves it in more dreampop territory. I think it also shows the expert craftsmanship of the group, as the song seemingly comes to an abrupt end; why go forth when you’ve said all there is to say in a song? The band’s self-titled LP comes out via First Human Records this Friday…with an In-Store performance over at Waterloo if you’re here in town!

Pleased To Meet You: Rad Gnar

Sometimes bands you love break-up, or move away and that’s just the way life goes. For me, that’s what happened with our beloved Basketball Shorts, who we worked with for their Hot n’ Ready LP. Now, guitarist Bench has a new band, Rad Gnar, and he’s taking on the vocal duties here too! The band’s first single from their forthcoming LP is filled with these huge crunchy rifts, as one would expect from his previous work. But, I really love the way he leaves his vocals hanging, letting the notes rise, then fall back down to your ears with those classic hooks! On May 18th the group will drop Rad Gnar, their self-titled debut, but if you want to catch them early…they have a show at Cheer Up Charlies on April 30th!

Lust for Youth Share By No Means

You need that perfect midweek dance track? Have you tried on this new Lust for Youth single? It’s only in the first ten seconds, but look at how much fun the dancer in the video is having! On a more serious note, the band’s slimmed down, forcing them to really focus on their craft, and if I might toss my hat into the ring, this feels like some of the best work they’ve done. They’ve got this sort of Eastern angular electronic feel that kicks the rhythm into gear, and while the vocals during the verses are about where they always are, it’s the way the chorus is delivered this round, with a kick up in the percussive element pulsing through. And is that a harmonica after the 2 minute mark? Seriously, these dang songs are on fire today! Lust for Youth drops on June 7th via Sacred Bones Records.

Lust for Youth Announce New Record

Long time fans of Lust for Youth might shudder at the thought, but it seems like the band have completely embraced their pop sensibility for their new self-titled LP. Our first listen has this pulsing brightness, breaking through the cavernous darkness usually present in the group’s tracks; the production seems a little bit more lush, with vocal turns that charm like at 1.30 mark when the line “it hurts my eyes to see you walking by yourself.” That seems to be the theme here, a brighter sonic future, but still holding onto a grim disposition in regards to the world’s state of affairs, both personal and global. Sacred Bones will be releasing this self-titled LP on June 7th.

We love putting out really amazing albums, really amazing ones. Just this week we’ve got the Hermits self-titled album dropping on a beautiful green cassette! It’s filled with these scuzzy pop songs that are bound to get stuck in your head from the minute you press play. You don’t believe me? Listen to “Ruby Red Summer,” a song so good it will ruin the rest of your day…as you’ll likely listen to nothing else. The band celebrate the release of the new LP this Thursday over at Cheer Up Charlies with The Oysters, Nevil and Being Dead.
