Alluvial Nuggets Share When We Lost the Internet

As we eagerly away the debut self-titled album from James Dutton’s project Alluvial Nuggets, at least we can all rejoice in another peak under the covers. At first, the song takes on a modern jig feel, straddling guitar chords working atop a bob-and-weave of the bass work, offering up a pulse that subsides to bring in a more bold pop approach. Although the bass line still maintains its energy, there is some arrangement work coming in to add these melodic bits that flesh it out, even as the song runs for the expanse at the end by way of smoking guitar lines. Look for the self-titled debut this June from Lost and Lonesome.

Teethe Release New LP

Going back through last week, one release I think I’d like on your radar is the new self-titled LP from Dallas band Teethe. The band are operating between that sort of bedroom emo style like fellow Texans Hovvdy, bu they also employ a bit of the North Texas penchant for slow core. I love the way this song burns slowly, like a candle giving off warmth but refusing to be extinguished. It’s one of those tunes where you can feel the emotion sort of dripping out through your speakers, rendering you moved yet immovable. Feel free to browse the rest of debut LP while you’re at it!

Mamalarky Announce Self-Titled LP

If you’ve had your eyes on Mamalarky, you might have noticed some bubbling tunes popping up this past year, hinting at their debut LP…and that time has finally been announced! Fire Talk will be releasing the self-titled LP on November 20th. With the news comes another single to tease the release, and it captures what I really enjoy about the band’s work. The playfulness in the video somehow always also seems to be part of the music too, balancing these exuberant notes with more serious approach; you can hear that in the anti-chorus moments going on here when Livvy’s voice sort of settles in more directly, kind of flattening out and making you take note. It’s like a fun rock party, and I’m totally here for it.

Circulatory System Reissue S/T LP and Cover Led Zeppelin

It’s been really great seeing the Elephant Six Recording Company back in the mix these last few years, as they’ve reached back in their catalog for some great reissues, like that Gerbils LP I hyped last year. Right now, they’re focused on the reissue of the self-titled debut of Circulatory System, a band helmed by Will Cullen Hart of Olivia Tremor Control (with some contributions from Jeff Magnum). That album alone is reason to celebrate, and a key fabric in the E6 quilt of indie rock, but if you act now, you can get a bonus 12″ with this super rare Led Zeppelin cover included, with the flip-side offering a Can cover. I love how Circulatory System plays up some of those pop notes in the track one might overlook if you’re just casually listening to the original, not to mention how they fuzz out the edges and let you get lost in a world that feels entirely of their own creation.

Bouncy Indiepop from Jeanines

Slumberland Records had a great week last week…a new video from Business of Dreams, an EP from Papercuts and a cover from Frankie Rose…but the best news was the announcement of this Jeanines LP. There’s an infectiousness bounce tearing through your speakers the instant you press play; it’s matched by that understated jangle in the guitars that makes indiepop nerds swoon. Alicia Jeanine’s vocals have this crystalline quality that sort of ride the melodic wave of the track itself; I’m not sure I’ve been so quickly charmed as I was upon first listen here…and it’s short, so go on and press repeat as many times as you can fit into the next hour. The band’s self titled debut will be out on June 14th.

New Pop Number from The Artisans

It seems like tons of folks in the indiepop rounds have been buzzing about the Artisans, and I’m here to pile on that excitement with the group’s latest single. The first minute of the track is teasingly slow, just toying with you from the get-go with it’s smooth vibes. But, just after the 1 minute mark we’re bouncing away in glorious fashion, jagged guitar cuts dancing their way through the rest of the song…or so you think. There’s a little switch near the two minute mark that spins both sides of the song into glorious infectiousness. Want to be charmed? The group’s self-titled album is out on April 8th.

New Ditty from Whoa Melodic

We were really excited to hear news of the debut Whoa Melodic LP late last year, and now we’ve got our second single from the self-titled album. This track seems perfectly built for those Sunday afternoons spend enjoying the sunshine on your back porch. There’s a great melody (I mean, melody has to be in every song, right?) that casually sits back in the mix, relaxing behind the sunny guitar chords and the soft beat of the drums. Pop songs like this don’t exist too often, so I’ll gladly welcome anything on par with this ditty. Look for the debut February 1st via WIAIWYA.

Check the Latest Single from Ethers

The latest single from Ethers just dropped on Friday, and sure, I’m a few days too late, but no need to ignore a good time, especially when it’s sponsored by Trouble in Mind Records. I love how the song starts with this circling guitar stomp; it leads you to fully expect a brash bit of indie rock. But, just beneath the surface is this little organ/keyboard line, adding the slightest hint of pop sensibility; that’s furthered during the chorus when the guitars take on that angular jangle following the line of “it’s a rip off.” This song features on the band’s self-titled debut LP, which drops on August 24th.

Don’t Overlook Rose Mercie

There’s a million songs a day coming to most of us, so you’ve got to dig a little deep to find some real gems. That’s how I stumbled upon French outfit Rose Mercie, who are preparing for the release of their self-title debut. Some outlets have thrown in comparisons to the Raincoats or The Shangri-Las, and all are fair, but there’s definitely a more modern twist around here. Just listen to the guitar on the track below; its angular and spirited, but presented in a casual fashion…akin to a dozen modern acts over here in the States. If you’re hoping to find some pop music on the unique side of things, then this is where you should go. Their debut is being released by SDZ Recordsand Monofonus Press on March 2nd.

Another Number from Lean Year

Western Vinyl will be releasing the debut album from Lean Year this Friday, and they encouraged us to drop one last tune in your lap today before its release. I think the structure of the song is one of the reason’s that the album is so intriguing. The negative space is filled with very careful samples, occasionally bubbling up to create atmospherics while a string is lightly plucked. Emilie Rex, for her part, does her best to enchant the listener with her delivery often hanging on the last gasp of varying notes. Just a slight build at the end before we fade out, and into Friday, where you’ll grab the LP at your local shop.
