This Blades of Joy gem has been bouncing around the Internet for a wee bit, but I was out having one of those baby things, so forgive me for not being on the up and up. That being said, this is one of the songs I rushed to get up upon my return. You might be able to toss the group into any number of categories, but most importantly, you’ll keep coming back to celebrate how great the music is. There’s a noticeable indifference in the guitar work, and yet the vocals have this warmth that could soothe any listener. There’s this timelessness to it, wherein it could fit into any musical decade and make an impact. If you listen to any one song today, make this the one. The band’s self-titled LP will drop on September 21st via Melters.

One Last Saturday Night Jam Before the LP Drops

This Friday Gentle Reminder Records will release the much-anticipated new LP from DC outfit Saturday Night. But, before they drop that LP, why not tease you with one more insatiable single. It opens with this heavy-ish riff…a little funky until the drums come in and change the song’s attitude. They roll over that riff, matched with the vocals to craft this melody you can’t put down. Slowly, the background starts to fill with little whispers, growing more prominent until Nora bursts forth to provide the perfect accent to the track. There’s enough bravado and fun in the rambunctious closing minute that you can’t help but let a smile crack across your face. Order the self-titled album right HERE!

Loving This New Exhalants Tune

While a great deal of what I’ve run lately has been on the poppier side of things, I’ve been mentally preparing for some good old rock n’ roll with Jawbreaker this Friday. So, it’s with great pleasure that I share this rad new rocker from Austin’s Exhalants…definitely got me in the mood. I love how there’s a slight melodic tone to the guitars at the start, while the artillery bursts of vocals from the distance adds a nice juxtaposition. There’s a natural heaviness in it too, especially with that ominous bass tone. Sounds old school, and yet ever present… a sign of something powerful coming our way soon; the band will release their self-titled debut via Self Sabotage on August 24h.

Another Tune from the New Gingerlys Release

It’s probably a really unfair time for Gingerlys; people will unfortunately just give them the blanket comparison to Alvvays…not a bad thing per se, but just so you know, the Gingerlys released Jumprope EP several weeks before Alvvays had their first release. Just saying. Other than usage of melody and a female vocalist, the structure and sound of the songs definitely differs. Listen in the background for the way the guitars distortedly twinkle in the distance…and the vocals seem happy to sort of sit atop the mix, rather than propel the track. The self-titled LP from Gingerlys will be released on November 17th via Babe City/Topshelf; Alvvays fans will love it, but mostly people that have really good taste in music will love it.

New Music from Joseph Childress

Joseph Childress has been on my radar for sometime now, and he’s just announced a brand new self-titled album…with an accompanying new single! There’s something in his voice that I can’t pull away from, both familiar and heavenly at once. His control over the notes moves perfectly, even as he holds onto syllables to match the song’s tempo. Oh, and if you need lush arrangements with your folk, wait until your ears lean in to hear what’s going on behind Childress’ voice. Look for the new release on October 6th via Empty Cellar Records.

New Music from Little Star

Little Star caught my ear with these dreamy little guitar noodlings that work within the confines of their latest single. But, what caught my ear faded as I grew more and more enamored with the slight little turns of tone in the vocals. They’re wrapped up nicely around the swirling guitars, and its just playful enough to elevate the sound beyond many of the peers offering like-minded, dreamy pop. Good Cheer Records will be releasing the band’s self-titled LP on April 14th, and this is a really promising way to get folks excited!

Brand New Music from The Sea Life

I’m going out on a limb here, but the new tunes from The Sea Life make me think of Omaha’s music scene in the early 00s. The vocal pitch is a bit off, even a little strained, but it’s filled with passion. There’s even a few hooks amidst the distorted chug of the guitars, opening up as the guitars begin to twinkle ever so carefully. I’m always looking to feel a bit more youthful, and this tune is doing just the trick. Look to find the band’s self-titled LP in stores on May 26th via Babe City Records/Art Is Hard Records.

Sure, you can jump right to the hits like “We Are” and “Modern Man,” but I implore you to listen to the careful pop gems hiding within the album. There’s lots of musical touchstones, demonstrating the wide variety of influences…take the super intimate “Float Away” or the bouncing hooks in the opener “Going Backwards”…and you’re sure to find joy somewhere within the confines of this listen. Premiere: Baby Lucy Releases Debut Single

01 - Baby Lucy Album Art LP Jacket Front CoverI’m really excited for you all to hear Baby Lucy; it’s the project of Troy Tabner, who played drums for one of our favorite acts in Austin, Sweet Talk. However, he’s now married and living in Houston, writing songs on his own. Your first listen should have you as excited as we are, filled with a galloping pace wrapped around Tabner’s vocals and strumming. There’s lightly placed backing vocals and a joyous chorus. It’s one of those tracks that immediately makes you feel uplifted, happy to just be walking on this Earth. The Baby Lucy LP is going to be released on October 14th via new label Roofus & Friends Records, so enjoy your listening, and keep an eye out for more from the project.

Spaced Out Track from The Dan Ryan

thedanryanNathan Dixey has done his time, playing with Hospital Ships and Your Friend, but he’s now going it on his own as The Dan Ryan…and it’s nice to hear what he’s creating. Trickling in, the track allows for some tension and psychedelic notes, but I don’t feel like this could be characterized as psych rock. If anything, it’s a re-imagining of folk music, a la Devendra Barnhart, though imagine that being recorded inside a bubble or beneath water; the vocals seem to struggle for air, whilst a tribal percussive element works beneath. You’ll definitely get an other-worldly vibe from this tune; it’s one of the tracks that will appear on his self-titled LP, coming out May 27th via Cosmic Dreamer Music. The Dan Ryan will celebrate the album release with a show at Cheer Up Charlies on May 24th; be sure to check the event page HERE.
