Sure, you can jump right to the hits like “We Are” and “Modern Man,” but I implore you to listen to the careful pop gems hiding within the album. There’s lots of musical touchstones, demonstrating the wide variety of influences…take the super intimate “Float Away” or the bouncing hooks in the opener “Going Backwards”…and you’re sure to find joy somewhere within the confines of this listen. 01 - Baby Lucy Album Art LP Jacket Front CoverI’m really excited for you all to hear Baby Lucy; it’s the project of Troy Tabner, who played drums for one of our favorite acts in Austin, Sweet Talk. However, he’s now married and living in Houston, writing songs on his own. Your first listen should have you as excited as we are, filled with a galloping pace wrapped around Tabner’s vocals and strumming. There’s lightly placed backing vocals and a joyous chorus. It’s one of those tracks that immediately makes you feel uplifted, happy to just be walking on this Earth. The Baby Lucy LP is going to be released on October 14th via new label Roofus & Friends Records, so enjoy your listening, and keep an eye out for more from the project.

Spaced Out Track from The Dan Ryan

thedanryanNathan Dixey has done his time, playing with Hospital Ships and Your Friend, but he’s now going it on his own as The Dan Ryan…and it’s nice to hear what he’s creating. Trickling in, the track allows for some tension and psychedelic notes, but I don’t feel like this could be characterized as psych rock. If anything, it’s a re-imagining of folk music, a la Devendra Barnhart, though imagine that being recorded inside a bubble or beneath water; the vocals seem to struggle for air, whilst a tribal percussive element works beneath. You’ll definitely get an other-worldly vibe from this tune; it’s one of the tracks that will appear on his self-titled LP, coming out May 27th via Cosmic Dreamer Music. The Dan Ryan will celebrate the album release with a show at Cheer Up Charlies on May 24th; be sure to check the event page HERE.

Something Different from Private Victories

privatevictoriesBoom. Tuesday is made! This song’s totally different than anything else I’ve gotten in days, and I’m totally in love with Private Victories…at least for the next few hours. It’s got that quirky singer-songwriter sensibility many associate with Magnetic Fields, although I think I hear a bit of Devendra Banhart too in the way the vocal notes are drawn out. Sometimes things get circular in the music that comes out, which is why I really love stuff that takes a step outside. Looking for something familiar, yet refreshing? Look for the self-titled debut to come out on May 6th.

Hear Another Birds of Night Tune

birdiesA few weeks back we were fortunate to premiere the first single off the new Birds of Night tune, and now they’ve returned with another smoldering indie rock groover.  The Denton band’s newest tune has them in the territory of early TV on the Radio, exploring the range of the vocals, yet there’s some continued progression of the seemingly non-stop soloing guitar; it creates a sensation of consistently being pushed forward, consistently enjoying yourself as your fueled by the sputtering energy. Their self-titled LP will be out on April 21st, so keep a look out.

New Music from The Woolen Men

It’s always interesting when you can see a geographical stamp in a band’s sound, so it’s no surprise that new music from The Woolen Men bares some homage to the Pacific Northwest.  Sure, this most comes through in the bands vocal stylings, with hints of woodsmen, though the aesthetic of recording and running things on your own has also played a huge part in the region’s output.  The band just signed on with Woodsist to release their brand new self-titled LP, which will be in stores officially on March 5th.  I have a feeling a lot of you are going to find this release something you can really get behind.
