The Wickies Announce Self Titled Debut

Make no mistake about it, but Quinn Kinsella-Mulkerin has one of the greatest voices around; she blew me away with her performance in family band Big Blood. But, now she’s found a friend and is channeling her energy into The Wickies. The duo just announced their debut LP for Ba Da Bing, and it’s as intoxicating as anything I’ve heard all week, so please don’t skip over it. In a sense this is classic rock n’ roll; there’s not a lot of excess flare and extemporaneous flourishes, rather than focus on the natural rhythm and feel, which is aided by a steady percussive stomp and a restrained Quinn. Pure rock and roll at its greatest here, so be sure to pencil in a space to grab The Wickies when it drops on October 4th.

Alluvial Nuggets Release Hot Knives

This new single from Alluvial Nuggets immediately resonated here with the guitar tones; there was something about the bobbing notes working in unison with the gentle strum, setting the scene for this wistful nature to sweep across the song. When James Dutton comes in with his voice, he’s offering up his delivery with a little bit in reserve, as if he is still unsure of how much of himself he’d like to pass onto the listener. You’ll get a beautiful sweeping movement when the drums elevate the track with just a hint more speed just after the 1 minute marker. Look for the new self-titled record to hit on June 28th via Lost and Lonesome.

ATX Spotlight: New Carl Sagan’s Skate Shoes

calrsaganIt comes as no surprise to folks in Austin that Carl Sagan’s Skate Shoes should be our next big local export, as the band have been taking over this town show by show. Today they dropped a brand new single off brandishing their wall of noise and punishing vocals. For me, what’s always been impressive is the underlying pop sensibility in the band’s sound, coating their melodies with distortion and brooding bass lines. The band’s about to release their self-titled effort on August 19th via Super Secret Records; it’s time the rest of the world took note!

New Music from The Estranged

estranged2014 has been a jam packed year, but some labels have seemingly been in hibernation, like my personal favorite, Dirtnap Records. They’re getting in the swing of the action though, with the announcement that they’ll be releasing a new record from The Estranged.  While it’s rumored that the band has widened their spectrum on post-punk influences, this tune rings a bit of Ted Leo, which if you know me, isn’t a bad thing by any means. It’s a self-titled record and it hits the stores on March 18th…enjoy a little preview below.
