It was a hectic week on my end, and RayRay up and left town (to travel to Detroit!), so I snuck in a bunch of gems I think you’ll really enjoy, all of them presented in a little playlist for your pleasure. I was stoked to see our friends in Pop Filter back with a new album and single, so be sure to listen to “Dirt Road Anthem.” Also in the unexpected great news realm, Tony Molina has a new LP on the way, and well, we’ve opted to include all 3 of the singles he released, as there’s never a bad time for Tony! We got UK stuff too, with new Pynch, Adults and Teenage Tom Petties, so that’s at least three continents represented in this 20 track collection for you all!

Sharp Pins Release I Don’t Have the Heart

Any time that Kai Slater releases a song you better believe that everyone’s going to turn their attention towards it, and today with a new Sharp Pins track, our ears are enjoying the sweet sounds. There’s a definite leaning towards an old school garage jangle here, though he throws in some creative moments where the tune takes a little discursion, like near the 1:35 mark where he goes almost pure pop, or at least as far towards pop as Slater’s willing to go; it’s these little twists and turns that make him so unique as a songwriter, as he seems to pull from a wealth of musical allusions while building a soundscape all his own. His new effort, Balloon Balloon Balloon will be out on November 21st via K Records/Perennial.

Stella is getting her groove back, or at least I am. Managed to get my feet underneath me a little bit this past week, so we’ve got a pretty decent amount of tracks to represent. Threw out a couple of premieres for the homies at Feel It Records, with new No Peeling and Fan Club dropping this week. Turned around and dropped some Austin love for Skloss and Whisper too, which is always a goal. Really enjoyed my own introduction to the tragic story of Stroik, with a powerful tune you should put on your radar. Nice to see some favorites on the dial too like Sharp Pins and Frog. But man, this Happy Dust Gang tune in here is just my jam!

Brand New Sharp Pins Album

After a reissue of Radio DDR, which included some brand new singles, Kai Slater’s project Sharp Pins has a new release scheduled to drop before the end of the year. What I love about his solo work is how it pulls from a classic pop songwriting sensibilityl; there are melodies galore, but he consistently brings in just enough of a stomping groove that you feel as if you’re rocking out. That perfect balance is so rare, something accomplished by the greats like Bolan or Chilton, and perhaps that’s too much pressure for such a young artist…but Slater doesn’t seem to mine as he’s churning out incredible hits like the ditty below. Balloon Balloon Balloon will be out November 21st via K/Perennial Records.

Well, after going pretty nonstop for nearly 20 years, RayRay and I had our first real Spring Break, so we took a few days off…please forgive us! That means that today you’re getting a lot of jams coming your way, new and a week old that I couldn’t ignore! But, even with our time off, Ray and I covered almost 20 new tunes…all but one included in our weekly wrap-up playlist to get your day started. There’s new Buffet Lunch, Mamalarky, Sharp Pins and more. It’s a really busy week in the music business, with everyone aflutter over the new album from Japanese Breakfast. But, while that’s stealing the headlines, we’ve got some other recommendations we’d like for you to consider before you venture off into the weekend. We’ve been highlighting several of these releases, most notably the reissue from Sharp Pins, which features some incredible new songs. Pretty solid wee of new music last week, and we got to as much as our time allowed. We even managed to start getting some of our SXSW coverage together, as the festival is somehow just over the horizon; RayRay got an interview up with Population II you should check out. We even got back on some album stream coverage, making sure to have the homies in Constant Follower and Daily Worker up there. We continue as the one-site hype machine for Sharp Pins Radio DDR reissue, but there some of my favorite acts also returned with their own new jams to grab us, like Dumb Things and Jetstream Pony. I even jumped on the Sports Team train with their latest single. Get into it below.

We covered a fair amount of ground last week, though perhaps not quite as much rolling out as the previous week of tunes. We did get a new Jad Fair/Samuel Locke Ward video premiere that can only be seen HERE. That being said, there were tons of other tunes we can run up our playlist flagpole, like the news tune from Sharp Pins, as part of Kai’s reissue of Radio DDR. Dean Wareham dropped another single from his new record, so that’s good news for all of us. Plus, the end of the week hit hard, with great new ditties from Exploding Flowers and Mythical Motors to round out a solid week of tunes. Stream them below.

Sharp Pins Share Storma Lee Video

The expanded version of Radio DDR will be out this March, but every new little Sharp Pins snippet we get to hear, like “Storma Lee” just makes me feel embarrassed how infinitely cool this kid is. I don’t mean that in a belittling sense, but there’s this wiseness and awareness that I can’t imagine possessing at his age, and his music is beginning to show the depths of that knowledge. Slater calls this a “zombie beach boy daydream terror,” though I can see it as a less erratic Guided by Voices; it has this slight polish, just on the cusp of being overdone or disappearing altogether. There’s a dedication to a sort of lo-fidelity taste, and the warbles add to that texture, but slight little changes like the plot twist at 1:48 illustrate the stunning craftsmanship in all these songs. Just another phenomenal taste of what’s to come: Radio DDR is out March 21st via K Records/Perennial.
