Even More from Red Sleeping Beauty

redsleepingAfter announcing their return with a few new tracks, it’s clear that Red Sleeping Beauty are making a full-fledged return, and thank god for that. This is some of my favorite pop music, both in style and in general; there’s an electronic pulse and a phenomenal melody that one can’t deny when it comes through their speakers. There’s a purity to it, and in that, I find myself pining for the release of the band’s new album, Kristina. This record will be released by the super-reliable Shelflife on June 17th.

More Synth Pop from Red Sleeping Beauty

redsleepingWhen I talked about the Mi Amor 7″ a few weeks back I mentioned that Red Sleeping Beauty really seemed to be going for it again, with deserved success. Today, Labrador and Shelflife released another track from the forthcoming album, and it’s a hit. I love the tone of the vocals (dark, sometimes smoky), especially when they coolly move into the chorus. Synth work is playful, though it’s not banging you over the head like some EDM sorts, allowing you to take in the pleasure of great electronic pop. The record is titled Kristina and has a release date of June 17th. You want real pop music? Here you go.

Return of the Close Lobsters

closelobstersThere’s always a lot of talk in the indiepop circle about the influence of the C86 Tapes, but when it comes to the Close Lobsters, perhaps the best thing is that they’re still here bringing brilliant pop music to the fold. On this brand new single, their first in a few years, throw all the nods to the past out the window and relish in great pop songwriting; there’s a purity in every note that rings true in your soul. The subject matter even seems to tackle the importance of musical evolution in London, at least in more modern times…both the changes and the message left behind. You’ll hear this track on thebeautiful new Desires and Signs EPbeing issued by Shelflife on June 3rd.

Classic Pop from Red Sleeping Beauty

redsleepingAfter a long hiatus, Red Sleeping Beauty has picked things up over the last few years, culminating in the latest 7″ for Shelflife/Labrador. It’s just a careful wash of electronic joy, the sort that one millions of hearts on late 80s radio. Male and female vocals trade places over synthesized grooves, erupting in a soaring Spanish chorus laden with guitar working low in the mix. I suggest you go get your hands on this release before it’s too late to feel like you’ve fallen in love all over again; it’s available now!

Brand New Music from Airiel

airielPerhaps the best thing about the end of SXSW is waking up to see that you completely missed a new Airiel tune during all the madness. It’s the perfect piece to raise me from this exhaustion, filled with that jangling guitar cascade and precision drumming. This is our first glimpse at the band’s newest work, their first since 2007. I love how it borders on shimmering dream pop and jangling indie rock, even drawing on a cool vocal performance. Molten Young Lovers will be out soon via Shelflife, with a promise that’you can dance to it.’

Great Demo from Goodly Thousands

74917_449316638455527_827934431_nIt’s possible that I could rehash yesterday’s news with the cool and hip bands everyone else had, but I’d rather give you a look at the future…that happens to be (hopefully) a new album from Goodly Thousands. It’s been a little bit since we heard from the band; the last time was on their Sunshine Hair EP (Shelflife)…I guess that was only about a year ago. So, they just uploaded this demo…but even as it stands, the songwriting is perfect, and one of the reasons I’ve fawned over the group. Here’s to hoping we hear more from them soon.

Soft Indiepop from California Snow Story

1300_1104601302925014_3769517267500157304_nIt’s been a really long time since anyone has heard from California Snow Story, at least in so far as new music goes, but you got the feeling with some posts in November of last year that new tunes were in the work. Just Friday the band released the first single, which will be handled collectively by Rallye and Shelflife, so you know it’s already got great support. I love this tune; it’s the casual side of indiepop, letting you relax while your soul is filled with melody. We’ll have to wait until May to hear the whole thing, but for now, this is about as good as it gets from the genre.

Free Music from Palms on Fire

1501060_787234427980208_1557624226325387883_oWell, we’re only a few days away from that whole 2016 thing, and it’s already looking promising for those on the hunt for great indiepop…namely these two new track from Palms on Fire. Right now, Shelflife is offering the tunes for free on their site, just as a hint as to what you can expect from the band’s new record coming out at the end of January. It’s got that rolling indiepop feel, with just a touch of jangling, a traveling drum beat and a really pleasant female vocal. Just another one of those songs that makes you feel good about being you and about being a fan of music. Enjoy.

Lost Track from The Ocean Blue

oceansI wonder how many bands out there have “lost tracks”? I’m sure it’s hard to sit down in a studio and see what fits with the feeling of an album, but I’m definitely glad that The Ocean Blue offered up this lost gem from their early years on Sire Records. This track celebrates a band that’s been knocking around since the 1980s, and celebrates their hard work with their first label; they’ll be re-releasing those first three albums on vinyl today. Whether its the production or the influence of their sound, but I can definitely see this track fitting nicely inside some modern indie rock playlists…they were just another band clearly ahead of their time. Grab those re-issues from Shelflife or Korda today!

Synth-y Jam from Talking Bush

talkingbushIt wasn’t too long ago that Talking Bush released their latest EP for Shelflife, but the band is wasting no time on the turnaround, readying a brand new tune for your ears. There’s a chilled out vibe to this one, and I can imagine folks who love the 80s dance pop fawning here. But, even with that nod, I still like some of the vocal inflections; they really sell me on the song as a whole, even if they’re only there for a syllable or too.  Give yourself some time with this track, then thank me later.
