Show Preview: We Are Scientists @ Red 7 (5.15)

WeAreScientists-300x163

Date Thursday, May 15th
Location Red 7
Doors 9:00 PM
Tickets $13 from Red 7

We Are Scientists are blowing into town supporting the release of this year’s album, TV en Francais.  The record has done pretty well, but I’d like to advise you to catch the opening act PAWS.  The Glaswegian band brings a nice dosage of rock and pop to the table, but it’s also not every day a band from overseas gets to spend a little bit of time in our town.  You’ll also enjoy jamming to their most recent LP, Youth Culture Forever, or go even further back with Cokefloat.  Your Thursday night needs a dosage of fun? Then meet us at Red 7.

Show Preview: The Migrant Kids @ Mohawk (5.12)

migrant

Date Monday, May 12th
Location Mohawk
Doors 9:00 PM
Tickets $6 at the Door

We’ve written about Austin’s Migrant Kids many a post, so we don’t really need to harp on the act much more, other than you’ll miss out on their set if you don’t stay through the night.  But, what caught my eye on the line-up was BE Godfrey‘s EP release.  I posted about one of his new tracks last week, and it’s definitely something that warrants your listening, both at the Mohawk, and at home.  Where else could you pick it up but from the artist himself? They’ll also be joined by Austin’s Silver Ships opening the night up, so you’ve got a great set of mellow jams to enjoy all night long..perfect way to slide into the work week.

Rad Shows for Thursday Night

austinSorry we’re bringing this to you on such short notice, but we had to make sure you knew of all your rad options this evening to attend some great shows, featuring many of our homegrown acts.  A lot of these options are really reasonably priced, so if you’re planning on heading out for the evening, and you’re interested in catching a show, here’s some options that won’t let you down.  Read more

Ticket Giveaway: Kishi Bashi @ Mohawk (5.9)

KBashi1Personally, this is the steal of the week.  Kishi Bashi is renown for his incredible performances, not to mention the moving music he’s created, so why not take a chance to grab yourself a pair of free tickets from us and our friends at Transmission.  Kishi is known for looping his voice, his violin and beats, a la Andrew Bird, but I have a feeling that he’ll bring a friend or two to the stage.  If you’ve been hiding in a hole, then I suggest you go back and listen to 151a, or steam his up-coming release, Lighght, over at NPR. This is guaranteed to be one of those shows your friends will talk about for years, so be sure to show up.  And get there early to catch Plume Giant. You can assure yourself tickets HERE, or you can leave a comment with Your Favorite Local Eatery; I’ll pick the winner who I agree with the most (I’m in fat kid mode today, FYI).

Contest closes at 12 PM CST on Thursday, May 8th.

Show Preview: Audacity @ Hotel Vegas (4.29)

tumblr_inline_mj08bavIaS1qz4rgpThe shows just keep coming and coming, and personally, this show at Hotel Vegas is a doozy.  I loved Butter Knife, the latest record from Audacity, and in fact included it in our list of Top 50 Albums of 2013.  It’s a high energy album, making their live show all the same, filled with great riffs and pop sensibility.  But, as if that wasn’t enough, you should also be there to check out the local openers, Loteria, being my particular favorite of the bunch.  They go on just before Audacity, but if you get there early, you’ll also be able to catch The Golden Ghetto and Slash & Spread.  It’s a great little line-up, so if you’re in need of something to do, think about heading to Hotel Vegas.

Show Preview: Odonis Odonis @ Mohawk (4.21)

odonis

Date Monday, April 21st
Location Mohawk
Doors 9:00 PM
Tickets $10

There’s a ton of heavy-hitting shows in town this week, from Vampy Weeks to Mogwai…and beyond.  But, you should start your Monday night with something particularly special, something loud; you should get your week going by hitting up the Odonis Odonis show at Mohawk tonight!  We’ve mentioned the band on numerous occasions, but now that we’ve had ample time to have our ears destroyed (willingly) by the group’s new album, Hard Boiled Soft Boiled, I’m adamant that this show is something you can’t miss.  But, I warn you, your going to need to get your ears checked afterwards, just to make sure they’re still working right.  They’ll be joined by Shockwave Riderz and Super Thief, so be sure to schedule in some time for this can’t miss evening of tunes.

Show Preview: S. Carey @ Holy Mountain (4.7)

scarey

Date Monday, April 7th
Location Holy Mountain
Doors 9 PM
Tickets $10 from Transmission

I imagine it’s been fairly difficult for S. Carey to escape his ties to Bon Iver, but with the recent release of Range of Light, he seems to continue to get beyond the shadows of his other work.  His songwriting is quite intimate and personal, allowing listeners to find themselves lost in his musical compositions.  He’ll be joined at Holy Mountain by White Hinterland, another group that’s crafting these ornate pieces that quietly immerse you in another world.  And, opening the night will be local lady-hero, Dana Falconberry, who really needs no introduction.  You’ve got three great musicians, and no excuses, so head out tonight! And, S. Carey has a free show at Waterloo at 6 if you’re into that sort of thing.

Show Preview: RF Shannon @ Cheer Up Charlies (3.27) – FREE!!!

rfshannon

Date Thursday, March 27th
Location Cheer Up Charlies
Doors 9:00 PM
Tickets FREE

Traveling acts are rather sparse this week, as the bands wait for us to clean the streets of SXSW, so you’re best bet is to catch one of the great local acts playing about town.  My suggestion is to catch RF Shannon this Thursday evening over at Cheer Up Charlies.  The show is FREE, for one, but the group is also one of the acts who everyone is expecting a big year from in Austin.  They’ve just released their Hunting Songs LP on Punctum Records, which is worth your listening pleasure.  They’ll be joined on the evening by King Mary and Real Live Tigers.  Join me, won’t you?
