Young Girls EP Release Party @ Lamberts (2/20)

YGThis wasn’t how this show was originally planned, but sometimes your stars all line up in the right way, and we’re happy to announce that this Thursday we’ll be throwing down with Young Girls to release their much anticipated 7″, courtesy of Austintownhall Records.  I’ve got the EP down below for you to jam to your hearts conent, guaranteeing you’ll want to be there, or you can order it HERE.  Another reason to come…two of the best young bands in Austin, Shivery Shakes and Reservations.  I can’t go on too much about SS, as my lady friend is getting a little jealous of William, but I can say this: I’ve been watching them play for awhile, and while they were always good, they’ve never sounded as great and confident as they do now.  And Reservations? That’s a band that is expected to have a huge year; the songs are there, the drive is there, it’s just a matter of time before it blows up.  So come join us, and I’ll sell you a 7″.

Show Preview: Hospitality @ Red 7 (2.17)

Date Monday, Februrary 17th
Location Red 7
Doors 9:00 PM
Tickets $14 at the Door

So you’re bummed that you didn’t get tickets to the Neutral Milk Hotel show? Well, you can do the next best thing by joining us to catch their label mates, Hospitality.  They’re new album, Trouble, got a lot of love from our girl Nicole, and while it takes on a darker tone, it still has the same infectious sensibility as their first effort.  My personal highlight though is catch Air Waves, open, who we haven’t heard from in some time, but I’m sure that their tour indicates things are about to change.  Austin’s own Modrag will begin the night, so raise your spirits by catching the “other” best show in town.

Show Preview: Superchunk @ Mohawk (2/6)

Date Thursday, February 6th
Location Mohawk
Doors 7:00 PM
Tickets $18 from Mohawk

When you talk about the legend that is Superchunk, you can’t just talk about the influence they’ve made musically, but also the influence they’ve had on modern indie rock music.  Mac and Laura founded Merge Records (one of our favorite labels) as a way to put out their own songs, and that of their peers.  It seems only fitting that these taste makers would team up with another up-and-coming act, Waxahatchee, to organize an incredible show for Austinites.  While the old school act has a bit of a pop-grunge sound, the young bucks are going to bring you a more noisy version of folk tunes.  Seems like the perfect way to spend a Thursday night.

Date Wednesday, January 29th
Location Mohawk
Doors 9:00 PM
Tickets $8 from Mohawk

If you paid any attention to our year end list from 2013, you probably noticed that Cate Le Bon was on there for her wonderful, Mug Museum.  It’s actually one of those albums that grew on me more, even after I raved about it.  Plus, when she comes into town, she’ll be coming with Kevin Morby of Woods/Babies, who just released a pretty solid record of his own right at the end of 2013.  Both musicians will surely draw a large crowd, but don’t overlook local openers Love Inks, who’ve clearly done just fine with their own recent release, Generation Club.  It’s a great bill from start to finish, so be sure to show up early and join in the fun.

Show Preview: Pure Bathing Culture @ Red 7 (1/27)

Pure+Bathing+Culture+Photo+by+Cara+RobbinsYo, listen up! The weather man says it’s about to snow again, so you better get in your good tunes while you can! Tonight, there’s a great bit of tuneage going on over at Red 7.  Headlining the night will be the smooth operators of Pure Bathing Culture, offering their casual dream pop to what I expect will be a horde of eager listeners hoping to hear their favorite hit off the group’s most recent, Moon Tides.  You’ll also get a chance to see La Luz, the Seattle pop group who deserve our love, after a tour accident put a damper on the end to their 2013.  And me, I’m showing up super early for our good friends She Sir, who are destined to kill things this year with their new upcoming effort.  Here’s some jams from the openers to encourage you to show up early! Tickets are $14 at the door–doors open at 9.

Show Preview: Amputees and She Sir @ Hotel Vegas – Tonight!

She Sir

Date Thursday, January 16th
Location Hotel Vegas
Doors 9:00 PM
Tickets $5

Looking at this show line-up, attending this set on a Thursday night seems like a no-brainer to me.  You get the Amputees, who will be playing a three day residency in Austin, plus other really incredible acts that should already be on your radar at this point.  There’s She Sir, who we’ve already told you are set for a big year with their up-copming release, Go Guitars.  And, you’ll get to see Ruby Fray, who won tons of people over during her Free Week appearances, so there’s really no reason to skip it.  Make it a fun night, and hit up the show.

Show Preview: Brazos @ Holy Mountain (12.11)

Brazos

Date Wednesday, December 11th
Location Holy Mountain
Doors 9:00 PM
Tickets $10 from Transmission

I’m actually a little amazed at how much is going on in the music community this week, and this is an absolute must see show! Brazos, the one-time Austin band is touring in support of Saltwater, which we enjoyed; it also got a lot of great national press too..deservedly so.  We also did this great takeaway show with them HERE. Plus, you’ll get to see Ski Lodge again, who made one of our Top 50 LPs of the year, Big Heart.  The last time they played, B.Gray and I were having a grand old time.  And, you’ll get to see Austin’s own rising star, Jess Williamson.  You win all around by attending this show on Wednesday night.
