It seems like almost a no-brainer that the Youth Lagoon show will be the event of the week (excluding the Grape St. record release afterwards). Trevor Powers and his project have garnered a huge following, and with the release of Wondrous Bughouse, appreciation for the band has grown. I’m excited that he’s been bringing a band along with him, which should flesh out the sound quite a bit.  But, do yourself a favor and don’t skip out on the opener Magical Cloudz, a recent signing to Matador Records. We wrote about Devon Welsh’s new project, and it’s powerful vocal appeal.  We’re all going to have a blast, so come join us…then tag along to Hotel Vegas for a nice little record release party.

I’ve been really excited about this show since its announcement.  Not only have I really appreciated the growth of Crystal Castles that was is illustrated by their latest, III, but their live show at ACL was definitely in my personal favorites this year.  They blend noise, electronica, fog and lights; it’s simply compelling.  Opening up the night is Doldrums, who aren’t too shabby either.  We’ve been fortunate enough to catch them opening for several acts over the last year or so, and I can assure you that it’s worth your time to show up early.  It might be pricy, but you’re going to get your money’s worth!

Show Preview: The People’s Temple

Seems like there is a worthy show every night here in Austin, and while I know tons of bands are playing, I’m hanging my hat on The People’s Temple show over at Mohawk Friday night. This last year saw the release of their More for the Masses, which added to their already established pyschedelic blend of rock n’ roll.  I caught them at the SXSW, and thoroughly enjoyed their act, so much so that I’ll gladly see them again Friday evening.  Plus, you’ll get to throw your support behind two great local Austin acts in Mirror Travel and La Migra.  Seems like a rad way to spend a weekend night if you ask me.

You guessed it folks, it’s rock n’ roll April in Austin, and we’ve got another good show for your weekend adventures.  We’re being invaded by Canadians this time, with Nova Scotia’s Wintersleep making their way to Red 7 on Sunday evening.   They’re touring behind the release of their latest effort, Hello Hum, which we’ve supported since the first singles leaked out.  They carry with them a blend of melody and powerful rock riffs, which leads me to believe the show will be both loud and mesmerizing.  Plus, our boys Grape St. will be opening.  I’ll actually be on hand to sell their records, since we just put it out on vinyl.  You don’t have it? Hey there Austin.  Just a heads up, you have no business calling yourself an Austin music fan if you’re not going to this show on Saturday night.  For starters, there’s four of our favorite bands, and we like to think we have good tastes, so that’s important.  Second, both Frank Smith and the Preservation will be releasing their albums that night, and I’ve even raved about the new Frank Smith record HERE.  Also, you get to check out some other up-and-comers who’ve been receiving a lot of our attention in East Cameron Folkcore and Growl.  It’s cheap; booze at Hold Mountain is cheap; people are friendly. If you’ve kept your eye on the site this week, you’ll know that one of the LPs that came out this week that I can’t stop spinning is Hard Coming Down from Gun Outfit.  It’s got the perfect blend of modern day indie rock with that nostalgic 90s bent, and I’ve heard nothing but great thigns about their live set. But, as if that weren’t enough, you’ll get to see underground icons, Versus, and one of our local favorites Flesh Lights.  To top it off, the Young and Ghetto Ghouls will be joining in, so you’ll get to see five rad bands for pretty cheap.  And everyone at Beerland is friendly, so there’s that.  Don’t be scared, come rock with me!

If you’ve looked at the upcoming shows listing for Austin, April is about to get really crazy ya’ll, so why not start things off right by spending an evening with some of the best local bands Austin has to offer.  We’ve raved about all of these bands for a long time, and I know that at least three of the four acts are working on new albums/singles, so you’re bound to hear some fresh tunes.  Shivery Shakes are tighter than ever. Tiger Waves, I love them. She Sir make smart pop that I adore. Shrines I haven’t seen, but to be on this bill, you know they’re rad.  Seriously everyone, it’s a cheap show, so come out and support local music. Here’s some jams from the Shakes, the Waves and the Sir in case you needed convincing.

We know that you all have your eyes on the prize.  Sure, SXSW is a few weeks away, but starting Wednesday night, we’re all going to be treated to a long week and a half of great music here in town.  Why not start things off with Efterklang?  The Danes have been crafting brilliant orchestral pop tunes for quite some time, and as a person who has caught their live set multilple times, I can attest that you won’t leave this show disappointed.  Oh, and if you need another reason to go, Nightlands are also on the bill.  Dave Hartley, who works by day in War on Drugs, has just released Oak Island, his personal bedroom recording project.  It’s got a broader, more extravagant, sonic pallette this time, so you’ll need to see him perform too.  Opening things up at 7:30 will be My Empty Phantom…from here on out there’s a rad show every night of the week, so if you’re skipping the hullabaloo, at least make it to this night of joy.

Show Preview: Tame Impala @ Stubbs (2.26) + After Party

It should be no surprise that Tuesday’s show with Tame Impala has sold out. The band has been universally praised with their two albums, the most recent being Lonerism.  It’s weird to see a band burst forth with such enthusiastic praise, but I assure you, having spent hours upon hours with the band’s music, it’s more than deserved.  I actually haven’t seen them live, so I’m looking forward to see what they have to offer in the live setting.  They’ll  be bringing friends The Growl with them from Australia.

And, immediately following the show, there is a killer set inside the venue featuring our local favorites Feathers and the Sour Notes.  I say go for it all.  Six hours of perfect music to make your perfect Tuesday.
