You want to get down with some rock n’ roll? Then you better take yourself out to Beerland tonight! All you fans of the heavier/faster side of Austin’s rock scene will surely find yourselves rocking to the killer new tunes from Austin’s Sweet Talk. The band has just released their record, Pickup Lines, and you really need to go get your hands on it. It’s a blend of crunchy punk rock, filled with hooks and call-and-response anthems. But, why I love those dudes, you will also get to see some of the incredible camaraderie by Austin’s rock scene, with openers Bad Sports (techinically Ft. Worth/Austin), Fleshlights and Burnt Skull. We’ve mentioned all those bands before, and you have no reason not go go out and just enjoy our cities best acts. Here’s one of the many hits from the new Sweet Talk record!
As rock n’ roll season heads into full swing, it’s time we all take advantate of the many shows that are coming our way in the next few months before SXSW hits us hard. Surely you know Ty Segall is playing at the Mohawk on Friday night with Ex-Cult and OBN IIIs, but what else is going on in town? Look, I know all of Austin is excited for the SOLD OUT Purity Ring set at Mohawk, as I hear the band is a big deal. But, that being said, if you’re not sticking around afterwards or not headed into the venue when the show is over, you’re going to miss out on two of Austin’s most promising acts. We’ve been behind Black Books and Tiger Waves from the start, and the more each group progresses, the more we continue to be amazed by their performances. Plus, Tiger Waves head out on tour the next day to represent Austin, so we’ve gotta send our boys off on the right foot! I promise those of you with an appreciation for interesting pop music, you won’t want to skip out. Here’s a song by Tiger Waves and Black Books, respectively, just to entice you a bit more.

After an excellent 2012, The Eastern Sea is taking aim at the New Year, bringing their sounds to The Parish–they’ll benefit from such an excellent sound board. Their release of Plague last year made a lot of year end lists, including our own, so you can expect an incredible set from the group Saturday night. They’ll be joined by The Kopecky Family Band and Emily Wolfe on the evening, rounding out a solid bill for a jam-packed weekend of music. If you like you’re tunes well-crafted, then this is the place to be this weekend.

Hopefully you’ve had a second to breather after free week, but it’s about time we all get right back at it. Luckily, if you’re looking for things on the cheap, there’s a great rock n’ roll show over at Beerland featuring some of our favorite acts, Holy Wave and Eets Feats. Both bands are really starting to make a name for themselves by working hard and playing about town as much as possible. They’ll be joined on stage by Classy Nude and Loteria…and Beerland always has cheap booze, so get out there and rock it out. You’ll love me for it the next day.

We’re drawing to the very end of what has been a great season of rock n’ roll, and what better way to wrap things up with a visit from The Babies. The part Vivian Girls, part Woods, super group blasts into town fresh off the release of their very excellent Our House on the Hill. Their music alone would be reason to go to this show, but we’ve also got the benefit of some incredible openers, namely Deep Time and Gal Pals.

In search for your favorite hyper-literate performer? Well, you can find John Darnielle and his band, The Mountain Goats, at Emos on Wednesday night. John and friends just released Transcendental Youth via his current label, Merge Records. While the band can probably be considered to have sort of a cult following, I personally feel that Darnielle is an underrated lyricist (more to my liking than a certain Mr. Meloy). Accompanying the group as openers will be Matthew E. White, which, according to the stuff I’ve listened to, should be quite an extravagant affair. This is one of those shows that might have fallen off people’s radars, but if you miss out on it, you’re going to have to hear from your friends how incredible the evening was.

Whether you choose to be a fan of the constantly evolving band Of Montreal or not probably remains irrelevant at this point in the year. Mohawk is winding down their outdoor show schedule for 2012, and this is pretty much a must attend show. Kevin Barnes and company are always extremely entertaining, and you never know quite what you get when you see the group live. Are there going to be elaborate costumes? Maybe. Will the tunes be enjoyable? Yes! You should just do yourself a favor and show up. French Horn Rebellion will be opening the evening up, making this a great bill. Oh, and Kevin Barnes will be DJing at a very hip after-party over at Red 7 following the show!
