Listen folks, if you’re in Austin, and you consider yourself a music fan, then you have a moral obligation to being at this show.  First, Letting Up Despite Great Faults moved to our town from LA, and since then, they’ve done wonders, releasing the excellent Untogether this year; it’s one of my favorite records of the year, period. Second, our old friends in She Sir are gearing up to take over the town with their upcoming album (early 2013); we ran their killer new single yesterday.  These are two of Austin’s finest bands, and there’s no cover at all, so you can’t really come up with a proper excuse, can you?  Oh, and Holy Mountain will have $2 Lone Star.  Cheap drinks, great music, no excuses. Be there.

Way back before it was cool to be doing elctronica music, The Faint were mixing dance beats and punk rock attitude, which birthed Danse Macabre; it’s one of my favorite records of the early 00s.  They’ll be bringing that excellent record back to the stage at Emo’s on Wednesday, along with some other rad bands to make those dance-aholics happy.  Label mates Icky Blossoms will be opening the evening, followed by our new favorites from Fun Fest, TRUST.  It’s going to be a night to revel in the joys of bands touring behind old records and a night to don your dancing shoes. Let’s do this.

Those of you still in town for the holidays are going to be lucky to catch one of the hottest up and coming acts in the indie scene, The Pharmacy.  They’re coming into town to support the release this week of their record, Stoned & Alone.  And, as if it wasn’t enough to catch their hook-y rock n’ roll, you also get some other great acts opening from our great local scene, like The Bad Lovers, Pharaohs, and Foreign Mothers. If you’re in town, and you need to get away from your family for a little bit, this is the perfect excuse to slip away and rock it out.

Okay, so I know a lot of you are trying to get out of town, but you’ve got a great reason to stay behind, just for a few hours.  Two of our favorite acts are coming to play the inside of Mohawk on Tuesday night: Generationals and Races.  Races played a show we sponsored this past summer, and they were incredible, pulling off a set that made us beg for them to come back.  As for Generationals, I can’t say enough about the group.  Their two records Con Law and Actor-Caster are great, and they just release the new Lucky Numbers EP, which is going to guarantee a great gig.  If you can stick around, then plan to show up!

Personally, this is one of the best line-ups I’ve seen in some time, with two of my favorite bands blasting into town to rock it out at Red 7 on Monday night.  Kicking off the night are Bad Sports, featuring a line-up split between Austin and North Texas.  They’re like a dirtier version of the Ramones, so you can’t go wrong.  And then, the genius of power-pop takes the stage via Gentleman Jesse & His Men.  The group’s long put out hits that I’ve adored and raved about, and their recent record, Leaving Atlanta, was definitely talked about greatly in our discussion of year-end lists. You only have to work two days this week, right? So why not start it off here.

Unfortunately the music world is slowly winding its way down towards the end of 2012, but that doesn’t mean there still aren’t some great acts pushing their way through town, such as The Sea and Cake.  They’ve just released their latest, Runner, which really surprised me with its immediate accessibility and careful pop sensibility.  They’re a massive underground favorite of many, and playing at the Mohawk with Fiery Furnaces‘ Matthew Friedberger just strengthens the bill all the more. It’s chilled out indie rock of the classiest sort, so be sure to make your way for a midweek treat.

Show Preview: Jens Lekman @ Mohawk (11.13)

Those of you searching for a blissful pop evening are going to be in luck with two great acts coming to the Mohawk on Tuesday night: Jens Lekman and Taken By Trees.  It’s going to be Swedish pop at its endearing finest, especially with both bands fresh off the release of their own albums.  Jens released I Know What Love Isn’t and Taken By Trees put out Other Worlds, both winning rave reviews.  It’s an early show, so it gives you plenty of time to revel in the glory of what you’ll witness, or you can head over to Red 7 to catch Twilight Sad’s set.  Perfect Tuesday night folks. Perfect.

Our friends have been gracious to provide us with a pair of tickets to one lucky winner for an incredible show going down next Tuesday at Red 7: The Twilight Sad.  I’m excited by this show for more than one reason: 1) I met our photographer Brian at a T. Sad who years ago, so it’s our anniversary 2) the band is one of the most captivating live bands I’ve caught in years.  They stop in town behind the release of their latest, No One Can Ever Know, but there’s more reasons to want to win these tickets! Wednesday night is full of good solid shows, but one of our highlights for the week is Producer/DJ Matthew Dear.  He’s blowing into town in support of his popular new record, Beams; he’s sure to provide you with your midweek energy!  But, if that wasn’t enough, he’s bringing Outputmessage along with him, but you need to definitely get there at doors because one of Austin’s most exciting acts, Orthy will be opening the night up just before the group heads out on a nice East Coast tour.  Those of you with the dance/electronic leaning, this is the place you’ll want to be.

Have we got a deal for you !? The great people of Transmission are allowing us to help you get out and see one of the most anticipated shows of the season, Woods over at Red 7.  Their recent release, Bend Beyond, is absolutely magnificent, and I have a feeling it will make a lot of year end lists.  But, if that’s not enough to convince you, you can also see Widowspeak, a Captured Tracks act that made my list of favorites at SXSW this past year.  Oh, and local group Hidden Ritual is setting things off right as the opening slot!  All you need to do is leave a comment with your most anticipated Fun Fun Fun Fest band, and we’ll pick our favorite and let you have 2 free tickets to Wednesday night’s show.
