Retail Drugs Sign to Angel Tapes

If we were to make a collection of panic-attack induing tape recordings I would imagine we’d find room for this new Retail Drugs track. The New York outfit have signed on with Angel Tapes, a subsidiary of sorts for Fire Talk Records, so you know the vibe can be trusted. This one works you into a frenzy rather quickly, with a synthesized drum loop pushing the pressure before a growling guitar comes hurtling towards the listener. It only seems to anger the beat, as it seemingly ramps up its own rush to the finish line. The vocals are buried deep, adding to the layered grumble of the tune. Excited to see what the future holds here.

Emily Hines Joins Keeled Scales Roster

Austin-based label Keeled Scales has one of the strongest rosters around, particularly if you’re one that is inclined towards folk leaning songwriters. Over the years they’ve introduced us to Katy Kirby, Jordan Moser, Julia Lucille…and now they’ve signed Emily Hines. With her signing, she’s released the below single, with this beautiful warmth in the recording that immediately draws in the listener. The strum creates this reverberation that just hangs in the atmosphere while Hines voice gently wafts across the room; it’s a marvelously intimate performance that reveals the sincerity we can expect when a full length comes our way. If you’re in town for SXSW, she’s be playing at the Keeled Scales/First Date Touring Showcase at Chess Club.

Gift Sign to Captured Tracks + Share Single

There’s been a lot of hype about these parts concerning GIFT, and it looks to have grabbed the attention of Captured Tracks who’ve announced the signing of the band by releasing this brand new single. They’re following up their excellent Momentary Presence debut with this track, and it seems them pushing into territory you might consider dream-pop adjacent. All the guitar work seems built upon a driving bit of speed, though there’s a lot of effects making the sound swirl around your head. Soft vocals dominate the front of the mix, which is one the band’s specialities, as they continue to toy with contrast in their sound.

Well Wisher Sign to Egghunt Records + Share Single

I feel like the best thing we can all do right now is just turn up the music and get lost, which is why this anthemic singalong from Well Wisher is the perfect way to announce their singing to Egghunt Records. Starting off with a stomping drum beat, singer Natalie announces “this song is for my baby girl,” an allusion to her partner and the love song that unfolds in the lyrics. For me, I’m totally stuck on the chorus; it’s this huge burst of euphoric pop rock, and I can picture myself quietly singing under my breath as I turn it up nice and loud. Jam out here nice and loud, and look for a record later in the Fall!

Mui Zyu Signs with Father Daughter Records

It’s always nice to see what Father Daughter puts out; they’ve been the quiet powerhouse label for years, probably as long as we’ve been running this silly site. Today they announce the signing of Mui Zyu, the project of Eva Lu, currently based out of London. With that announcement comes a great new single/video, packaged together beautifully, leaving us with hopes of a powerhouse release down the line. Lu’s voice is striking on its own, a calm in the storm of the heavier tones created around the vocals; you’ll find the the voice surrounded by this cavernous beat-laden brooding and black and white footage. Inside the tune you’ll find a few brief moments of angelic pop rise, but the reward only comes with the juxtaposition with the whole of the song.

Fuzzy Number from Earring

earringFire Talk Records seems to have a finger on the pulse, at least as far as the most recent fads come; it should be no surprise then they’ve added to their growing roster with Earring. The group unleashed their latest single, offering up a fuzzy tune that’s equal parts atmospheric vocals and equal parts blasts of noise. Something wicked lurks with Earring, however, as I find myself entranced by this number, getting drawn into the droning vocals as the cymbals crash in my ears. I also like these cats because they’re 50% of Ne-Hi, which was one of my favorite bands to get turned onto this year.
