Eades Share Delusion Spree

Really just wanted to get up something warm and punchy today, as it’s a blistering day outside my window here. That said, the frantic rock n’ roll of Eades seems a little calmed here, and I don’t mind that one bit, as we can all use a nice little pop rock ditty that’s not rushing in the same direction as everyone else out there. There’s something in the riff work as it kind of slides into the background in the tune’s middle that kind of hints at some of the Sonic Youth influences I think might slide under your radar; just listen carefully while the guitar solo is going about and tell me you don’t hear that! The band will be releasing Delusion Spree on March 4th via Heist or Hit.

That New Shout Out Louds Tune

Well, we took our eyes off the prize, and RayRay and I both completely missed this new Shout Out Louds tune, despite that being one of our favorite bands. The group are preparing their sixth album, House, which is out next February, continuing to show an adherence to these rhythm sections that naturally propel the song and its energy. Adam’s voice has this familiarity too, perhaps because I’ve been listening to the group since the early 00s, but it’s one of those distinctive voices you immediately recognize. I love the way the band build in various vocal textures here to back his voice, as its clear the new LP will be all about creating expansive pop layers. Sorry I missed this, but catch it here, now!

Artsick Share Ghost of Myself Video

I know we’re all clamoring over year end lists for 2021, but please, reserve a spot in next year’s list for Artsick; the band have only dropped two singles from their forthcoming LP, but already I’m saving it a place. This is the sort of frantic ramshackle pop meets punk that got me to jump ship full on into indie rock. It only takes 20 seconds for the waves to wash in and bring thumping drum work; the rhythm section drives the tune forward, bouncing it while Christina’s voice soars atop. Backing vocals also aid in delivering a satisfying bit of infectiousness, guaranteeing the song sticks in your brain all day long! Plus, the video should get bonus points since it was directed by Christina, who also is the sole character in it; I mean, can you direct a video and star in a video, all for a song you wrote?! That has to create some sort of black hole. Regardless, Fingers Crossed is out on January 21st via Slumberland Records.

Fortunato Durutti Marinetti Signs with Bobo Integral

Seems like we’re opening up our Wednesday musical journey with some mellow vibes, and I don’t mind that one bit as we settle into the week with this new track from Fortunato Durutti Marinetti. Listening to this new track from the forthcoming Memory’s Fool, you get little hints of Bill Callahan or maybe even Destroyer; it’s stripped back music with a powerful vocal performance. Somehow, even as the vocals come across almost spoken, they hang on the cusp of melodic, accented by these careful choral backing notes, punctuating the Marinetti’s voice. This is the sort of track that feels almost meditative, so be sure to dip your toes in this calming pool as you get your day moving; Memory’s Fool will be out on Bobo Integral come February 25th.

Introducing Robot Fox + Announcing Sham Rage

It’s time we introduce you to the world of Robot Fox, a brand new outfit from Melbourne featuring members of Crepes, Cool Sounds and other local acts. Listening through the band’s debut single from their Sham Rage LP, this is how psychedelic pop music should be made. Full stop. In the first few moments, you’re seduced by this meditative guitar that seems to sedate the listener, like sinking into your chair and drifting away on some LSD trip. When Pierce Morton enters the fray, his lackadaisical delivery feels like a mantra, like a calling out from the beyond; you’ll hear an increased musical element shimmering, along with some backing vocals. I love how they let the song breathe too, allowing the listener to bathe themselves in the sound. Throw in a little jazzy breakdown that comes out with this sky ripping guitar solo and you’ll be totally in love with the band’s sound. Their debut is Sham Rage, and its out on April 30th via Osborne Again!

Asa Morris Readies Another EP

The quarantine has kept songwriter Asa Morris rather busy, having already released 3 EPs this year, so why not drop one last one in there before we wrap up the shiftiness that is 2020. I love the hidden feel of the vocals, as if they’re whispering to me from somewhere down the hallway. Musically, there’s this really subtle melodic fall; it first happens in the song around the 50 second mark, and its admittedly the moment that I found myself swooning over this tune here. Loud & Sad is the name of Asa’s new EP, and if it sounds like this, you’re surely going to be hearing from me again.

Public Body Share Table Manners

I’ll go out and say that sometimes I feel like the whole post-punk guitar organization has gotten stale, but there’s a few outfits that still manage to turn me on, musically. Public Body is one such act, as they seem to kind of pull in some extra flare that kind of moves them out of that traditional formula. For me, some of their angular guitar work really catches me ear, akin to acts like Omni (who I adore), but even further into art punk at times. Plus, they never deliver you that expected climactic punch, at least not in this format; they tend to deliver more of a meditative rock sermon, just holding you long enough to get you through the track before letting you venture off into the world a new human.

Strawberry Whiplash Return with Press 4 for Love

It’s been nearly five years since we last heard from Strawberry Whiplash, but I have a feeling all those indiepop folks out there are going to be clamoring for more. Almost immediately, those crisp guitar notes turn from slight jangle to pace-car, locking the song in this bounding rhythm, occasionally broken up by the return of those crystalline guitar notes. Still, the song wouldn’t be complete without those melodic vocal notes that bring us back to the sugary pop of the early days of rock n’ roll. For some reason, this song just makes me feel like running about on a playground with a giant lollipop in my mouth! Sweet and fun. The digital single is available via Matinee Recordings. And, word is, this single is signs of new things to come, with a fresh LP promised for the new year!

Did You Die Share Latest Single

When you’re struggling, sometimes you have those go-to sounds that make you feel safe; I think going to this Did You Die track definitely helped me out; it was like throwing an anxiety blanket on my eardrums, in the best possible way. I love how there’s this wall of fuzz that bleeds through your speakers, and while I’m all about that sound, they peel it back like a banana, revealing this ripe pop sensibility that I thought really made the song sparkle. Definitely feels like the perfect way to fade into the weekend with a nice little noisy buzz, if you’re asking me.

Colourmusic Returns with Pool Party EP

We’ve been longtime followers of Oklahoma outfit Colourmusic, and we’re always grateful when they drop something new into the world. They just dropped their Pool Party EP, and I think its a perfect collection of tunes, offering up the perfect balance between their noisier experimental moves and their traditional quirky pop tendencies. The title track, which we’ve got below, has this sort of slinky bob and weave, with singer Ryan howling through the drum and tambourine stomp. I’ve been really enjoying listening to “Pink Moon” quite a bit too, but you know I’m a sucker for a good pop feel. For me, the band are still experimenting with sound, which warrants an award all its own…but you could just stream the new EP too!
