The Cords Announce Debut Record

It looks like I’ll be giving all my money this year to Slumberland/Skep Wax, as the two powerhouse labels have announced another joint release that I’m surely picking up. Today, the Cords have announced their debut self-titled album, and the new single picks up on all the promise they’ve displayed in the handful of singles that have popped up over the last couple of years. It’s an energetic rush of jangling guitars and steadfast drumming, snappy in the right spots while your cup is brimming with the melodic hooks on the vocal front. There is an innocence that pervades this tune, something that just allows you to lift your head above the foggy clouds of the sad world we live in, and for a moment, catch your breath and relish the joy in the simple things. Really looking forward to the entirety of their debut; it drops on September 26th.

Jeanines Share Coaxed a Storm Video

The rules of this site are that you cannot run consecutive posts from great labels like Slumberland/Skep Wax, who also released the Lighthearted tune we ran twenty minutes ago. So, now that I slid in that Glassio track, here’s a jam from the new Jeanines…a band that should really be the biggest in the world, just on songwriting alone. In this track, the bass line does the dirty work, giving the track this steady groove so that the guitars can jangle and cut up behind. Alicia Jeanine’s vocal performance, as expected, is sparkling, stretching itself to higher notes when called upon, delivering the signature supply of the group’s sound. How Long Can It Last is part of the double punch from the aforementioned labels, dropping next Friday!

Heavenly Return with Portland Town

We have been sitting on this news for some time, it’s finally the day that we can share there is a brand new Heavenly tune ready to take over the world! The legendary indiepop group has been quiet for the 29 years, though a string of reissues and a handful of shows seems to have relit the fire. It takes ten seconds for the band to lock into a proper bounce, punctuated by stuttering guitar licks and a solid snap on the drums. Of course, Amelia’s voice, as we’ve known, has all the hook and magic one would want, particularly when it switches tones in the chorus. This is the most delicious pop tune you’ll hear today; the new 7″ is available via Skep Wax on July 18th!

Jeanines Announce How Long Will It Last

There’s something strange afoot this week, with an abundance of pop music coming out our way, though if we’re being honest, a new Jeanines LP might just be the highlight of week! This go round, they’re taking on a tumultuous world; it’s one rife with changes, and as such, the band are embracing the deeper meaning in their lives and their work. That said, you wouldn’t know it by listening to this lead single, quickly bouncing right into reflection with lines like “I want to lay in the grass with you/watch dead leaves turning green and new,” illustrating that despite trials, there’s a brightness in the future. And, all of this gets put to task with their sharp guitar lines and Alicia Jeanine’s punctuated delivery. I always marvel at how their songs seems so long, yet they barely ever stretch over 2 minutes. If you’re interest is piqued, they’ll drop How Long Will it Last via Slumberland and Skep Wax on June 27th.

The Catenary Wires Join Brian Bilston for Sounds Made By Humans

We’ve long supported The Catenary Wires, as forever fans of anything Rob and Amelia do. This go round, they’ve joined up with acclaimed poet, Brian Bilston, for an exciting album billed as Sounds Made by Humans; it’s a bit of pop, a bit of poetry and the trails that are sprinkled in-between. The song opens with a sound bite, from Brian, but quickly erupts into a rolling twirl of thundering percussion and swirling vocal notes; it spins over and over, catching you like the undertow of the ocean, dragging you into the pop spectacle. Will all the tracks be like this? We’re not quite sure, as the LP aspires to mix the pop and the poet, but hopefully we’ll get to hear more from the folks at Skep Wax. Sounds Made By Humans is out on May 9th.

Friday Album Streams: Crumbs, Mountain Movers, Lightheaded and More

This is one of those crazy Fridays when its possible there’s just too much music to digest; I think we’ve done a solid job of covering most of the stuff leading up to today, except maybe the brand new Crumbs Video! There’s not a great need to wax poetic, as you can trace these records to our coverage the last few months. All you need to do is dive into the listens and see what you need to buy!

Late to the Party: Crumbs

Our friends over at Skep Wax sent us an early listen to Crumbs a few weeks back, but in being up-front, it got buried at the bottom of the emails that I just finally made my way through; I knew it would be good, so I suppose my brain wasn’t in a rush! We’ve got two great tracks you should turn up, with both really having this stomping bit of drum work that’s totally driving my adoration of their sound. That thump gets counteracted by the group’s guitar work, knifing its way in with a sharp twist that guarantees punk sounds will live on here. If Ruth’s vocal performance doesn’t fit the icing on the cake cliche, well, then perhaps you’ve got bad taste. Crumbs will release You’re Just Jealous on May 10th via the aforementioned Skep Wax.

Skep Wax Announce Under the Bridge 2

How does a label follow up a brilliant compilation like Under the Bridge? Well, Skep Wax aims to double down on their foray into the compilation world by tossing us Under the Bridge 2. If you thought they had heavy-hitters from the Sarah Records catalogue in round one, you won’t be surprised to find acts like the Hit Parade or St Christopher nestling up to acts like the Orchids and Boyracer. It’s basically a who’s-who of your indiepop heroes, working together again to shine a light on the genre. You’ll get a casual ballad opening the door to the new LP courtesy of the Gentle Spring, then its spun right around into the rambunctious jangling of Action Painting! Also, Skep Wax always does really cool things, so they’re hosting a live listening party featuring a lot of the artists, so you’ll want to RSVP for that event on April 5th; the LP is out the following day!

Check Out Panic Pocket’s Ode to Mr. Big

I dare you to find a catchier ode to Sex and the City (and Mr. Big) than this new single from Panic Pocket. Driving distorted rhythms and snappy drum fills pave the way for Nat and Sophie to let their vocals intermingle. Of course, there’s a playfulness to the tune, particularly when you listen closely to all the S &C nods, though they seem pertinent in any romantic pursuit as well. All this said, and I can’t come back to why I love Panic Pocket; the vocals seem diametrically opposed; you get a sort of steady deepness in one voice, and a punkish riot girl growl on the other, set against one another in a manner that allows the joy to shine right on through. If you’re digging this, you’ll likely dig the group’s Mad Half Hour, out now via Skep Wax.

Swansea Sound Share Keep Your Head On Video

Indiepop supergroup Swansea Sound will have a new record out later this year, so in the meantime they’re here to encourage your fandom by sharing their latest single. In contrast to their debut album Live at the Rum Puncheon, this song seems a bit more stationary, playing up the vocal interplay between Amelia and Huw rather than rocking with a frantic pace. There’s definitely a stomping bit that comes with the chorus, as they’re every-bit a rock band, but you can feel the natural swing in the songwriting, bringing about a sweeter bit of movement. Also, looks like they’ve expanded the lineup to include a certain Bob Collins; he seems real cool. They’ll release Twentieth Century this September via their Skep Wax label!
