Last Week’s Jams (4.7 – 4.11)

We covered a shit load of great music last week, and as is likely to happen, we’re a bit all over the place, sonically. There’s definitely a fair share of punk-ish stuff like The Golden Toad and Second Act, but some classic pop acts of days of old have returned. I mean, can we give a shout out for Comet Gain and Brideshead both announcing brand new albums? I premiered a brand new track from Gentle Leader XIV, and RayRay continued with our undying love of new Night Beats. Plus, you can’t go wrong with new Austin stuff from French Film (not streaming) and Mobley, so bopping there as well. Just find a favorite, as you’re bound to find something joyful.

What wasn’t finished on Gone Things, now has a home, as Slack Times have finally put the finishing touches on this bouncing jangler. The Alabama outfit have this incredible nature to bring this bit of Southern rock n’ roll swagger to the world of jangle pop, but for this new track, it’s the instrumental breakdown that has me fawning; it feels like something left on the cutting floor of a Go-Betweens recording session, and that’s never a bad vibe. The style of the vocal recording also appeals to my senses, and guarantees that if we wait patiently, the next LP (which is in the works!) is going to be out of this world. New ditty comes courtesy of Meritorio Records.

We crushed the coverage last week; we had some ACL coverage as well as some Sigur Ros notes from their Austin show. But, we also covered a solid 28 tracks, 26 of which made the cut on our Last Week’s Jams (the new Boyracer and Rocky Lorelei can only be found on the site). A new track from the Serfs is still living rent-free in my brain, while I discovered just how much I’m enjoying Kim Deal‘s new solo stuff. That doesn’t even scratch the surface, as there were several Texas’ acts like Pets and Trauma Ray getting some new jams out. I will admit, perhaps I overdid it, but eh, you love the new stuff right? Cool. Stream it then.

Slack Times Release Gone Things EP

At this point, we’ve covered most of the songs on this brand new record from Slack Times, but it’s one of the releases today that you’ve got to be sure to enjoy. Honestly, these 4 songs are perfect; they feel like the band have fully embraced their influences and adopted an approach that brings that to the front, whilst still feeling like they’re part of the present. Sure, there’s an homage to the great sounds of Flying Nun, but there’s also this vibrance that feels like they’ve written these songs with the feeling of being carefree, and locking into one another, livening the spirit of the recording. Looking back again at last week’s great releases, we felt like we couldn’t let Meritorio Records hog all the headlines, so we saved this Slack Times track for you, as nothing is likely to sweeten a ditty from this trio. After a little bit of a lineup change, they’ve really honed in on their craft, taking a walk down the slow-burning that resembles a bit of the fog-pop scene of current San Francisco, or maybe even the nostalgic wayward jangles of Galaxie 500. Honestly, if there’s anything to be upset about, it’s the fact that their new Gone Things EP only has 4 songs; it drops on Friday!

Slack Times Announce Gone Things EP

It’s been a couple of years since we fell in love with Carried Away, the last we heard from Alabama’s Slack Times. Alas, we need look to the past no more, as the group have a brand new EP on the way. It’s a brief venture, twirling jangling guitars before our yes, then moving right into a rollicking bit of ups and downs, with the vocals delivered in a manner that feels like lost territory between sweet indiepop and the jangles of the Clean. There’s certainly some mannerisms in the songwriting that all the kids, like us, will love. Gone Things EP is slated for a release on October 11th via Meritorio Records.

Last Week’s Jams, Today (6.13 – 6.17)

Well, we wrote up at least 25 fresh tracks last week, many of which we purposefully tried to make sure weren’t on all the other cool kid sites. That also might be why we missed a few that you’d expect us to cover. It was great to hear Cool Sounds taking some new risks for their new LP, plus we made sure we had that new Mary Onettes tune right up there. And, our old friends Big Bill dropped a new record, so we wanted to remind you of their gifts…and then, there were loads of other songs, meant to get you through those early Monday morning blues without having to think too much about what you’re listening to all day…just know it’ll be good.

Well, last week was a struggle. End of the school year, for two teachers, and well, then that other thing, so we barely got to the end of the week, let alone hit the musical stride with our usual fervor. So, our end of week wrap-up, which we give you at the beginning, is a little short. But, there’s new jams from great releases like R.E. Seraphin, Why Bonnie or Dehd, plus a rad new track off Hazy Sour Cherry‘s forthcoming LP for Damnably. And hey, you can never go wrong having a Tony Molina tune in there. So, here’s to one foot in front of the other with our favorite jams from last week.

Slack Times Drop Carried Away Single

Alabama’s Slack Times maybe get lumped in with the janglers of our time, and obviously I don’t mind that one bit, but I think that sells the band really short. On the title track to the forthcoming LP, the band even do their best to set the record straight with this sort of pseudo-Cali sun-pop guitar noodling; it’s balanced out by, you guessed it, the spot on jangle that counteract. Once the melody of the vocals sets in, it begins to feel like we’ve got this nostalgic longing settling in, both in message and sound; I don’t think there’s a single pop rock balladeer of the past that would mind this song being on their resume. If you’re looking for that spot where classic Americana meets up with jangling pop, then look no further then Carried Away; the LP is out June 24th via Meritorio.

Slack Times Share Look Away + Announce LP

If you actually read this site, then I reckon you’ve liked seen Slack Times pop up on our radar previously, particularly as we made a nod to their At the Blue Melon Rendezvous and its Athens influences. Well, today we’re here with the news of their new compilation record, which will include 6 new songs, atop the 8 tracks from their previous EPs. If you don’t find these crystalline guitar jangles hitting the right notes, wait until the handclaps and hip-shaking swagger swing into the chorus to really sell you on the masterful hooks the band use to fill their tunes. Carried Away already has 9 great tunes, so we’re looking forward to the rest if they sound this damned good. The LP is out June 24th via Meritorio Records.
