Did You Hear Yesterdays Frankie Rose Hit

We’ve long been fans of the various phases of Frankie Rose‘s career, and though we’re late to the game on this one, we can still appreciate great music when its out there. Fans will notice the sci-fi leanings of the video, which is said to be a huge influence on Rose’s new release, Cage Tropical. This song is pushing forward at all times, rhythmically seducing you while Frankie does her best to draw you in with a dreamy vocal smoke. You’ll find this is the perfect blend of pop music and creativity, guaranteeing that her new LP is destined for year end lists; look for the release on August 11 via Slumberland/Grey Market.

New Young Guv Tune

I love how Ben Cook continues to move towards the dancer side of his musical repertoire. While he’s spent a great deal of time with guitar in hand for Fucked Up, his own offerings as Young Guv tend to take on a whole new playful role. The guitars have an underlying shimmer, synths pump through the mix and you’ll find a nice little coat of wash atop the vocals…it all leads to his latest hit that will have you clamoring for more. It also comes with a great little video created by Tristan CM, who has created some audio postcards to go with Guv’s forthcoming releases. Look for the Traumatic 7″ via Slumberland Records this Friday.

This new track from The Proper Ornaments starts immediately, wrapping you up in the warmth of the band’s approach immediately. There’s a really nice contrast in the vocals, sounding sedate during the verses, with a bit of a brighter tone in the chorus (which totally sounds like a nod to Oasis by the way). Songs like this, steady and impactful have really made huge waves in this neck of the indie sphere, so we aware that everyone will eventually come around to praise these guys. Look for their new LP, Foxhole, on January 20th via Slumberland Records.

properWith the success of Ultimate Painting and Toy, it would seem natural that folks would clamor to hear music from The Proper Ornaments, a band made of bits and pieces from the above acts. Yet the band seems indifferent to accolades and buzz, just trucking along with really incredible bits of songwriting and pop sensibility. I like the texturing working beneath the rad sounds of the guitar; they’re either using a cabasa shaker or a rain stick, but it fits into the track seamlessly. It’s hard not to be impressed by songs before you, so if you’re into that buzz, then be sure to look for Foxhole on January 20th via Slumberland Records.

New Terry Malts Video

Have you bought the new Terry Malts LP yet? If not, I’m not sure what you’re waiting for, but in case you needed more convincing, then enjoy this brand new video from the group. Personally, I love the black and white aesthetic of the performance video; it seems to also fit the band’s sound. As far as the track goes, you’ll just need to listen to hear everything you love about pop music; I think the moment at the 1.50 mark where Phil and the band turn towards a classic guitar pop sound is brilliant. How folks haven’t discovered that this is one of the strongest group’s working today is beyond me. Grab Lost at the Party now from Slumberland Records.

properMan. Slumberland Records is making my week. I picked up the latest from the label with Real Numbers and Terry Malts new LPs, and now they’ve announced this record from The Proper Ornaments. Those of you looking at nostalgic classic rock, and I mean the early, carefully crafted sort, will surely adore what’s here. A warm vocal moves over a piano backbone, with a quiet bit of precision percussion. This is how pop music was meant to sound…at least to my ears. Look for their new effort, Foxhole, hitting on January 20th next year.

Stream Real Numbers New Album, Wordless Wonder

realnumsMore people should make music like this. Period. I mean, I’d probably adore anything from Slumberland Records, but you should be playing this Real Numbers album all day long. It’s got this exuberant undercurrent that runs through out, though there’s enough polish lacking to let you tell your friends how cool you are for discovering their favorite new band. We live in a world of singles, so it’s refreshing to bounce along to something for a good thirty minutes of your day (then bounce all over again). If you grew up jamming to punk rock, then decided it was way cool to fall in love with pop songs too, then you’re just going to play this all day long. Look for Wordless Wonder in stores this Friday!

Play More Terry Malts!

terrymaltI’m not ever going to get tired of raving about Terry Malts; I’ve been aboard this bandwagon since the beginning. Their new album, Lost at the Party, comes out in two weeks, and I think this might be their best work to date. They still employ those shredding guitar riffs, but as this song displays, there’s a propulsive energy that exemplifies everything the band’s always been about. I love the balance between the distortion and steady hand of the verses. You’ve been wanting a band to make pop music cool again? Well, then look no further…grab the LP from Slumberland Records on October 14th.

That being said, his new work, continues to surprise me. It’s not the brevity, as that’s always been his staple, but rather the gentle quality of the tunes themselves. I almost envision them as perfectly crafted demos, written quietly over quick spurts of beautiful creativity. But, if it’s a good tune you’re after, then it’s a good tune you’ll get by pressing play. Look for the Confront the Truth EP on October 28th from those Slumberland cats.

realfakeI’m not sure why you haven’t pre-ordered this new Real Numbers record yet? I tried to convince you with their first new single, but here’s another chance for you to realize how great pop music is these days. Ringing guitars, a bouncing step in the rhythm…and a sense of longing in the vocal delivery. Sure, you could add more reverb and some 40 second ambient solo, but pop music is best when it sticks to simplicity…and in this case its great. Slumberland Records is releasing Wordless Wonder on October 14th, and I reckon the best pop fans will be clamoring to get their hands on it, fighting over shelves like it’s Record Store Day…don’t be one of those folks, get it HERE now!
